May, 2015 Volume 1 Issue 9 600 Harristown Road Glen Rock, NJ 07452 8th Graders Visit D.C. Spine Poetry Contest Over 75 students participated in the Spine Poetry Contest. The contest was arranged/organized by Mrs. Mitchell, MS media specialist, to celebrate National Poetry Month and School Library Month. Students stacked books on top of one another so that the book titles on the spine created a poem. Mrs. Limongelli, Mrs. Zaorski, Ms. Glynn and Ms. Sculfort assisted Mrs. Mitchell in judging the many impressive entries. 8th graders attending the annual D.C. trip observed their classmates assisting with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The students enjoyed the 3 day educational trip by visiting many museums, historic sites and federal buildings. “April Showers Bring May Allergies” All Middle School students enjoyed outside recess for the month of April but with the recent pollen count being at an all-time high, we have temporarily relocated the students indoors for lunch recess. They have been enjoying recess in the gymnasium and we hope to get back outside early next week. Awards were presented to the following students: Owen Deutschman – winner, 8th grade; Dan Crane – winner, 7th grade; Amanda Lota – winner, 6th grade. Honorable mentions went to Naz Brady and Isabel Traphagen – 8th grade; Danielle Pragdat and Christina Kim – 7th grade; Jack Culhane, Christian Domino, Jared Franz, Faith Hiras, Raegan Johnson, Simi Kaur, Alex Liberti and Carlos Mascari – 6th grade. State Testing Update Glen Rock Middle School will be finishing up PARCC testing next week with 7th and 8th grade Mathematics testing. The 8th graders will also be taking the yearly NJASK Science 8 Assessment on May 27th. On Tuesday, June 9th, acclaimed young adult author, Todd Strasser will be visiting Glen Rock Middle School. The New York Times said, "This is an author who really has his finger on the way kids think." Mr. Strasser is an award winning author who has written well over 140 young adult books including The Wave, Give A Boy A Gun, The Accident, Can’t Get There From Here, Boot Camp. His two latest books, Fall Out and No Place deal with social issues and are very thought provoking. Several of his books have been adapted for television or feature films. Principal: Mr. Edward S.
