Italy Trip 2015
By all accounts, the Italy trip during the Easter
holidays was a resounding success. The group were
kept busy with a packed itinerary, enjoying an
array of fascinating tourist destinations and
learning much about ancient civilisations. Here are
extracts from their blog and more photos can be
viewed by clicking the camera icon...
Day One
“The beginning of our journey to Italy started by
waking early in the morning and meeting all our
fellow companions in the coffee bar at Bristol
Airport. We took off at a high speed sending us to
the back of our seats. The "gentle" turbulence was
a thrill to us, as we flew up into the open air. We
loved to look out and see the blanket of cloud
below us and the view of high white mountains.
The landing came sooner than expected. We were
all bundled in a hot coach for a three hour journey
to Serrento with beautiful views on the way and us
capturing the best photos we could take. We
travelled through gorgeous villages, saw towering
mountains, and passed Mount Vesuvius. We finally
made it to our hotel.”
Pompeii
By Ollie H and Loveday H

………………………………………………………………………………
Vesuvius and Pompeii
“We woke up to a sweet breakfast then got going
on the coach. We then went on a guided tour
around the Vulcano Solfatara meaning ‘Volcano of
the Sulphur Land’. It permanently stank of rotten
eggs there, which I was sure wasn't the
decomposition of the Titans who had supposedly
fought there...
“Today I slept well as the loud Italians had left. We
woke early, had breakfast and got onto the coach.
It took an hour but finally we made it to Vesuvius.
It was beautiful. We had a half an hour walk to the
peak and on the way I took plenty of photos. When
we reached the top it was stunning.
Next, we got back onto the coach to go to
Herculaneum. We found out that nearly all of the
city was intact beneath our feet. Then we went
underground to explore the buildings and last we
returned to the hotel to write our blogs…”
“This hidden city covered in 25 feet of ash and
pumice, was buried for 2,000 years until an Italian
architect came across it while he was building a
pipeline.”
Jami S
We then headed to Pompeii. We went through the
ampi-theatre, it was well preserved. We saw the
streets the citizens of Pompeii would have walked
through daily. We saw amazing mosaics, sculptures
and casts. A tour guide showed us some great
sights.
………………………………………………………………………………
We had a wonderful day packed with activities (Mr
Edalatpour let me borrow his expert camera and
kept me lagging behind).”
Solfatara (Land of Sulphur)
Harri D
“This death trap of bad smells lurked silently in and
out of people's noses, making everyone complain
about the strong stench. Our guide said the boiling
point of the water was 100-200 degrees Celsius.”

SQUASH
GOLF
Under 11 Championship
Millfield Prep Golf Academy enjoyed success over the Easter holidays!
Open Doubles
Jamie B and Robert M
worked well together in the
doubles having never played
together before the
tournament. They played
with skill and determination
to reach the final, winning
17-15 in the fifth set of an
extremely exciting semifinals game. The finals proved to be a step too far and they were beaten by
a well prepared team from HHK; who had been practising together against
their second pair (beaten by Jamie and Robert in the semi's) every week
since September!
The golfers have been busy over the Easter break with the highlight
being Freddie T’s win in the Somerset U12 Championships where he
also placed 4th in the U14s. An excellent result!
William O played very successfully back at his home course and also
won an U14 event at Tylney Park, which led to his handicap being cut
by two shots.
Hugo K won two tournaments in Jersey to reduce his handicap by
three shots.
Sky P won a competition in Kenya and also had his handicap reduced
by a shot.
Open Singles
Jamie was extremely pleased with his performance throughout the three
days and the number of matches gave him some much needed practice
after his year out. It was a very tough few days playing thirteen games, but
he gained in confidence and with Millfield’s Director of Squash, Ian
Thomas, in his corner on the last day he was extremely pleased to finish
runner-up to the British number 3 from Wycliffe, having battled through a
tough semi-final.
The boys were very happy to have reached their respective finals. Having
Ian there was a boost for everyone and we certainly appreciated his
support as I'm sure the others did too.
It has been a pleasure representing Millfield on the National stage and it
will be exciting next year bringing the opposition to Millfield. when the
event is hosted here.

TRIATHLON
Over Easter both Niall and Jasmine C were
busy competing in various multi- events as
they prepare for the new triathlon season.
Both entered aquathlon events (swim/run)
in Yeovil, Burnham-on-Sea and Trowbridge.
With Niall racing as a Tristar 3, winning all
three events and Jasmine racing as a
younger Tristar 2, also doing very well
securing 2nd place and two top 5 finishes.
Niall also entered the Bath Duathlon (run/
bike/run) and finished a respectable 7th
against some fairly accomplished cyclists.
In addition, Niall swam 5,000m in 1hr 26m
for the Marie Curie Cancer Charity on
Saturday, as part of the national
Swimathon 2015 and raised a healthy
£200. Well done!
Somerset Schools Championship, Worlebury Golf Club
Charlie G shot the lowest gross out of the Millfield Prep golfers
shooting 84 to finish with a nett 69. Freddie T and Sky P played
steadily but had the odd bad hole and completed the A team scores
with nett 77's.
The C team of William O, Jack H and Barney F played well with
William recording the best score of the three with a nett 75. The
highlight was the B team of Hugo King, Morgan B and Javier C who all
played brilliantly to finish with nett 66, 69 and 71 to become the
Somerset Schools nett team champions!
Next week is the second match against Port Regis at Kingweston and
the first game of a brand new event the ISGA league against Sidcot, All
Hallows and Westonbirt Prep.

CRICKET - INDIA TOUR
“I went to the Global Cricket School
in India in the Easter holidays, for
one week. It is run by Sachin Bajaj, a
very nice man who will look after
you very well.
even played a friendly game. We
then came back to the hotel and
used their swimming pool, pool
tables and four bowling alleys until a
delicious dinner.
I started off in the centre of Mumbai
for a net session on my first day. I
had a coach and four 18 year olds
bowling spin at me.
One of the nights after training, we
drove into the centre of Mumbai
and watched Mumbai Indians and
Kings XI Punjab train at the
Wankhede stadium. I had pictures
with Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Finch,
Ricky Ponting and I saw Sachin
Tendulkar. It was great listening to
all the advice being given.
It was extremely fun as they bowled
and collected balls for me. I only had
a three hour session on the first day
as the coach wanted me to
acclimatise to the heat slowly.
On my second day I moved to the
suburbs of Mumbai and had a
slightly longer net session. It is really
hot in India, and I could barely bat
for 20 minutes without needing a
drink.
After my net session I had a small
walk to the Sachin Tendulkar hotel,
owned and opened by Tendulkar. It
was here where I met some 16 year
old Australians touring with former
Australian cricketer Jason Krejza. I
stayed in a room with one of them
called Nick and they were all a laugh
and good fun.
For the next four days we trained for
two hours in the morning and two
hours in early afternoon, one day we
Above: Tom bowling in the match.
On my last night I watched a great
Ipl game between Mumbai and
Punjab. Fortunately Punjab won!
My week at the Global Cricket
School was really good but my only
regret was I wasn't there for longer
as the Australians were playing two
more games and even a bit of street
cricket!
It was really enjoyable and I would
definitely go again if given the
choice.
The wicket is so different to England
as it spins and bounces so much
more. The wicket is so unpredictable
so it is a fantastic experience to play
against.”

HOCKEY
Our 1st V11 Hockey team played in the West
of England Hockey Finals on Tuesday.
Competing against the county champions
and runners-up from the region and our
chaps were on fantastic form.
In the group stages we won all our matches,
scoring 22 goals without conceding. In the
quarter-final we dispatched Castle Court 5-0
before defeating a spirited Monkton Combe
team in the semi-final. This meant that the
boys qualified for the National Finals at
Beeston on Friday 8 May. From an initial
entry of more than five hundred schools we
are down to the last ten. This achievement is
even more impressive when you consider
that nearly all our players have developed
their hockey skills almost entirely through
the school programme.
In the final we met an extremely talented
team from Dean Close. Our boys played with
huge determination and commitment. We
are also beginning to operate with a very
high skill level. We pushed Dean Close
extremely hard and the balance of play was
reflected in the fact that we did not concede
a single penalty corner. Sadly we couldn’t
quite take our chances and Dean Close
converted to become worthy champions of
the west.
We will begin preparations for the Nationals
on Tuesday and I can sense a steely
determination in the camp! We should arrive
in Nottingham in good shape. The whole
team were a great credit to the school.

BIATHLON
Eighteen of our pupils competed at the National Schools Biathlon with
many more having qualified but not competing. The girls competed on
the Saturday straight after the school term finished and the boys
competed on the Sunday. The competition took place at the Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London, and all of our pupils raced
their hardest to obtain personal bests in both the swim and the run.
The girls were lucky with the weather and competed in glorious
sunshine. which made for a lovely days racing. The boys on the other
hand had to battle the elements with strong winds and rain. However,
the results our pupils and teacher achieved were highly commendable
against the best athletes from around the country. See below for

Sophie m competed in the East Region Triathlon League Basildon
Aquathlon where despite the appalling weather (horizontal rain) which
made the playing field for some of the run a quagmire she came 2nd.
Unfortunately, because of an inattentive marshall she followed a few
other competitors who went the wrong side of a cordoned off area
and ended up in a very large and deep muddy puddle where she lost
both shoes and spent a long while searching for them. Without that
she probably would have won as was only 13 seconds behind the
winner!
Sophie also competed in the Upminster Aquathlon the following
morning after returning from the school trip in Italy. Thankfully this
went without incident and a 1st place swim and 2nd place run meant
she won the event with over 30 seconds to spare from two South East
England IRC representatives.
Colours: Apologies to Scott r who also received Hockey Colours at the end of Spring Term.

SAILING
We had a cracking start to the summer’s sailing at Chew Valley Lake, with 1517 knots of wind. A fun afternoon, finishing with a capsize drill; the new

pleased.

child born 1 September 2004 or later to play with an adult
family member (can be parent, uncle, aunt, sibling etc).
Doubles played on Mini Red tennis court with Mini Red

Welcome back to a wonderfully sunny Pre-Prep. We have already been making
the most of the warm weather and the children have been enjoying a range of
outdoor activities. It is so refreshing to see the children in their summer uniform
but please don’t forget that white socks should be worn with summer dresses
and a school hat is essential for playtimes.
Some of you may have read that Mrs Link in Year 1 will be retiring this year. She
will be very much missed in the Pre-Prep and we are very sad to lose her, but
extremely envious of her new life planned down in Dorset! (More details to
follow soon regarding our plans for a good ‘send off’).
We have a range of exciting activities planned for this term, but priority needs to
be given to our May Day festivities. The children need to come to school at the
usual time on 4 May, and they will then ‘open’ the fair at 12.30pm with maypole
and country dancing displays. Please ensure that you don’t miss this! The
children will then be free to visit the numerous stalls and activities with you
once they have danced. Please see overleaf for a programme of the day.
Please, please support us by sending in plants and seedlings etc. for our Plant
Stall – all proceeds will go to the RNLI MAYDAY appeal. The Parents’ and Friends’
Association would also welcome donations of cakes and new or nearly new toys
and books for the tombola. These can be brought in on the morning of the fair.
On Wednesday 6 May we would like to invite parents of children in Reception to
join us for their class assembly. This will be held in the Pre-Prep hall at 9.00am,
coffee and biscuits will be available from 8.30am onwards. This is a lovely
opportunity for you to be involved in our daily assembly and for the children to
show off their developing public speaking and performance skills! Please feel
free to bring grannies, grandpas, aunties and uncles too.
Let’s hope that this lovely weather holds for May Day and that we are able to
have a wonderful time raising funds for worthy causes.
Mrs Blasdale
We are delighted to invite you to our Open
Morning on Friday 1 May—click to book
Travelling Book Fair!
We have the Book Fair visiting us from 6-13 May. All
classes will be visiting the Fair during the week to
purchase a book, but you are also welcome to pop in
and purchase books for your child/ren yourself if you
wish to. It will be held in the Pre-Prep dining room every
day from 8.30am-4.00pm and I would suggest that
8.30am after drop off or 3.15pm would be good times
for Pre-Prep parents to visit.
You can also order books online with click and collect
from travellingbooks.co.uk. Just order and pay online
and collect the books from the Fair.

A Wonderful Year for Blossom
The delights of painting the cherry blossom on Apple Tree
Green are captured in these photographs of the Year 1
childen. Apparently the cold nights and warm days are
making this year’s spectacle especially good.
Page 13
The Pre-School children have had a lovely time in the
sunshine painting pictures of their blossom trees. They have
also had great fun playing outside with the water and sand.
