Three Oaks Middle School PTO Meeting Notes 4/20/2015 The meeting opened at 5:10pm, on April 20, 2015 Member in attendance: Mr. Michael Carson (Principal), Mr. Richard Barta (Teacher-On-Assignment, Acting AP), Judy Behr (Parent), Patrice Coates (Parent), Christine Goll (Parent), and Jen Owens (Parent) Minutes were not available from the previous PTO meeting. Administration Report: Mr. Carson acknowledged the administrative changes. The resignation of Mr. Pugh; Mr. Barta accepting the Teacher-On-Assignment of acting Assistant Principal; Mr. Travis McKellar, current History teacher at TOMS is teaching Mr. Barta’s current classes. Mr. Carson is positive that the transition will be a smooth one. Mr. Carson discussed the Florida Statement Assessment (FSA) testing that has and will be administered for the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in the coming month. Mr. Carson is reviewing the Teen Biz program with several parents to address questions in regards to its components. Mr. Carson mentioned that next year, each child will receive a Chrome Book. This will include an e-copy of class books, limited access to the Internet via the District standards, Google classroom applications. The administration and staff are working on ways to improve TOMS time for 2015/2016. Possibly using the time for academic intervention. An Intervention Specialist is slotted for part-time, but would like to get the funding for the position full time. Mr. Carson said there should be 44 gifted seats for sixth grade next year, and will increase in seventh grade the following year, and the third year will be 44 gifted seats in all three grade levels. TOMS is looking to become an AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) school. This program focuses on “bubble students”, which are students who will be the first generation to attend college. The upcoming eighth grade activities and celebrations were discussed: Busch Gardens (May 1 st), Dress-up Day (May 26th-28th), end of year formal dance at Three Oaks Middle (May 29) and the Celebration at Estero High School (June 4th). CCE testing for eighth graders. A Chromebook demonstration will be set up for the next PTO Meeting on May 18, 2015. New Business PTO will provide funding for The Florida Repertoire to present the production of the Wizard of Oz for sixth and seventh grade students. Mrs. Jen Owens, treasurer – reported that the current PTO Treasury balance is $11,472.92. Parent Comments Mrs. Behr had a question regarding the difference of subjects across the board. She personally noticed that although her current 6th graders are both in advanced classes that the level of work seem to not be in sync with each other. The meeting was adjourned at 6:05pm 1|Page
