READINGS FOR NEXT WEEKEND
APRIL 26, 2015
Acts 4:8-12; 1 Jn 3:1-2; Jn 10:11-18
Reflection:
Adults: Jesus, the Good Shepherd cares so much for us, His
sheep. How will we follow Jesus, our Shepherd? Will we be
conscious of people who need protection, people who are
afraid, or weak? How will we reach out to them?
Children: Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He loves us and
cares for us. He helps us when we are lonely or afraid. How
will you, as a friend of Jesus, help others?

In February, Canada’s Supreme Court overturned the ban on
physician-assisted suicide (PAS) and joined a growing number
of progressive nations that have legalized euthanasia (Belgium,
Luxembourg, Switzerland and the Netherlands). In the U.S.,
PAS laws have been executed on the state level in Oregon,
Washington, and Vermont. There is no PAS law in Montana,
but a court ruling has shielded physicians from criminal liability
if a patient has given consent to PAS. With the highly public
and partisan story of Brittany Maynard, a California woman
diagnosed with terminal brain cancer who availed herself of
Oregon’s PAS law, there is mounting pressure in many other
state legislatures to legalize PAS.
Currently in N.Y., suicide assisted by a physician is illegal and
can be prosecuted as second degree manslaughter. However, in
February, End of Life Choices New York (formerly Compassion
& Choices of New York and the leading organization promoting
PAS throughout the U.S.) initiated a lawsuit to carve out an
exception against prosecuting physicians who assist a terminally
ill patient to commit suicide in New York. Some NY State Senators have introduced legislations (S. 3685, New York End of
Life Options Act) and an Assemblywoman has sponsored similar legislation (A. 2129, Death With Dignity Act).
Some law makers are appealing to a sense of compassion for
those experiencing suffering as the end of life approaches, but
advances in pain medicine have eradicated virtually all cases of
intractable pain.

TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent
In gratitude for God’s gifts of time and talent to use, we gratefully salute our Family Mass Committee.
Stewardship Thought for the Week
The disciples in today’s Gospel came to know Jesus in the
breaking of the bread. When we share what we have with
those who are in need, we, too, will discover Jesus in our
midst.
