APRIL 19, 2015
Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; 1 Jn 2:1-5a; Lk 24:35-48
Reflection
Adults: At first the disciples did not recognize the risen
Christ. After their wondrous joy, He opened their minds to
understand the scriptures. Let’s ask Jesus to help us to understand His word. Will we listen at Mass with open hearts
to the word proclaimed and then broken open in the homily?
Children: At Mass will you listen carefully to the story of
Jesus? Ask Jesus to help you to understand His beautiful
word.

IMPORTANT: Please be kind enough to contact Lynn at the
Rectory if you would like your loved ones removed from or added
to our Prayer List .
—Life is Sacred. Human life is sacred, from the first moment of conception to the moment of natural death. Life is a
gift from a loving God, and we are stewards of that gift, called
to respect and protect it. Euthanasia is an action or omission
which of itself or by intention causes death in order to eliminate suffering. It is, therefore, a rejection of God’s gift of life.
—Life is Eternal. For Catholics, death is not the end but the
beginning, the beginning of eternal life with God the Father.
Our Faith assures us that we “look forward to the resurrection
of the dead, the life of the world to come, Amen.”
—Ordinary vs. Extraordinary Treatments. While it is
never permissible to directly choose to bring about one’s
death in order to relieve pain or suffering, the Catholic Church
has never taught that the faithful are required to use all available means to sustain life. The church teaches that we are obligated to provide—and to accept—ordinary means of sustaining life. Such treatments are those that offer a reasonable
hope of benefit without excessive burdens. If a particular
treatment entails significant burdens that are out of proportion
to the expected benefits, it can be termed “extraordinary” and
it is optional.
—Benefits vs Burdens. There are many factors that must be
considered when making this “burden/benefit” analysis, including the nature of the treatment, the cost, the prognosis, the
side effects, the pain, as well as emotional consequences.
Each judgment is unique, and is not a medical judgment, but a
moral judgment. Each patient, or their proxy decision-maker,
should pray for guidance and graces, seek counsel from their
family and trusted spiritual adviser, and gather all pertinent
information from the medical professionals.
—Nutrition and Hydration. In principal, there is an obligation to provide patients with food and water, including medially assisted nutrition and hydration such as feeding tubes. At
times, however, such tubes many be deemed excessively burdensome and of little or no benefit, such as when death is imminent and the body can no longer assimilate the food and
water. When nutrition and hydration are withheld or removed
for such reasons, death occurs as a result of the underlying
condition, not through starvation or dehydration.
—Pain Management. Modern medical care has become increasingly skillful in the area of pain relief. Our Church
teaches that patients must be kept as free of pain as possible,
so that they may die comfortably. This is part of our Christian
obligation to be charitable and to love our neighbor. Even
pain medications that may indirectly shorten a person’s life
are morally permissible, as long as the intent is to alleviate
pain and not to hasten death.

TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent
In gratitude for God’s gifts of time and talent to use, we gratefully salute our Parish & Family Life Ministry.
Stewardship Thought for the Week
The Christian community described in Acts understood and
practiced total stewardship. St. Paul reports that the believers
did not claim anything as their own, but held everything in
common, and distributed to each whatever was needed.

YOU CAN MAKE
A DIFFERENCE ...
COME JOIN US… For women who are
17 years old and older
Just a reminder, we still have food
certificates available for our local supermarkets. Food certificates are the same as gift
certificates, only they are for the supermarkets. We have them
for King Kullen, Stop & Shop, Pathmark, Cross Island Fruits
and CVS. Since you have to eat and feed your family, why not
help your parish at the same time? It’s an even exchange. If
you give us $100, we give you $100 in food certificates. They
actually come in denominations from $5 up to $100. Spend
whatever you wish. In turn, the supermarket will give us a 5%
rebate.
We have approximately 2,500 families in our parish.
Can you imagine, if each family in our parish used these certificates on a regular basis to do their food shopping, what the
revenue could be? Our parish will receive 5% of the total
amount of certificates you use. They don’t cost you anything
more than what you would have spent at the store.
You can get them at the Rectory, Monday through
Friday from 9:30AM to 4:30PM and 6PM to 9PM. On Saturday from 9:30M to 5:00PM and on Sundays, before or after
you go to Mass from 9AM to 1PM. When purchasing them
from the Rectory, you must pay by check only. They are also
available during school hours at OLP School, which will accept cash or check.
Please join us on April 17 to April 19th (beginning
Friday at 7PM and ending with Sunday Vespers at 4PM) to
explore what it means to be part of the Dominican Family,

the world on fire.”
Please contact: Sr. Marenid Fabre, OP, Director of
Vocations at (631) 842-6000, Ext. 352. We are located at 555
