I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break. There is a wonderful buzz about the school as the children have come back for the new term with enthusiasm and excitement which has been great to see. I am pleased to report that there was no vandalism at the school over the holidays, so thank you to those who kept ‘watch’, it is greatly appreciated. We have a new member of staff Hayley Sheridan, who is replacing Melissa Crozier. Melissa is now on maternity leave and we await news of the new bub with great anticipation! Hayley will be in 1LC Monday and Tuesdays and I have no doubt that the Orchard Grove community will make her feel TERM 2 WEEK 1 most welcome. With the 100th year anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli we have a whole school unit currently running across the school. All students are learning about level relevant aspects of ANZAC Day, such as the traditions, ceremonies and significance of the event. We will have a whole school celebration next Friday on the eve of ANZAC Day, with classes displaying what they have learnt and then going on a Learning Walk to other classes to see what they have been doing. At 10.20am there will be an ANZAC Service assembly run by the JSC. The Year 5/6 students will also attend the Whitehorse Schools Centenary ANZAC Service on Wednesday. Once again we will be running the Poppy Appeal - with school leaders taking the collection around to each class starting today. We have items ranging from $2 to $5 for the students to purchase if desired. Years 2-6 will begin cricket clinics this coming Monday, with will run for an hour and over 4 weeks. Next week also sees Cross Country events taking place. It is important that hats are still brought to school not only for these events but also for playtimes where sun protection is required. Sun protection is required until the end of April. Finally, it is wonderful to have Barb our School First Aid officer as a permanent member of staff, however we are having a bit of an issue with some in our community seeing Barb as an option to carrying out first aid for children that should be done at home. If children have an injury or need first aid at school, then this is Barb’s role, however it is not Barb’s role to assist parents in assisting with medical issues that should be dealt with at home and by the parents. Barb’s hours are from 9 am to 3pm each day and she is kept very busy with the medical issues that happen at school in caring for nearly 600 students and 40 staff. We would appreciate your assistance in this area. I have just returned from a very productive trip to Spain. As part of the Language Teaching Scholarship awarded by the DEECD, I just completed a three week course at Vigo University in Galicia in north-western Spain. While there, I had the delight to visit our sister school in the beautiful village of Padrenda. It was wonderful to have this direct contact with the school and we look forward to many collaborative projects in the future. In Madrid, I met with the English teacher from our original sister school in Socuellamos and spoke to an Australian teacher working in a school there and also talked about many future plans. I managed to gather a wide range of resources which are being shipped back at the moment. OSHClub Hi everyone, Welcome back to school! Can you believe how cold it is out in the mornings and early evenings? We had an amazing time during vacation care and welcome back everyone from their holidays. We had a fantastic time at the Werribee Zoo and the Comedy Festival this year, most of all we loved the Space Cosmodome. We have created a reflection journal to document our holiday program time, this is on display at the program for viewing. Please leave a comment. Due to the cold weather the children have started enjoying group games in the P.A.C. and we have been utilising the long room when we have exceeded our rooms capacity. We are spending as much time as we can outside when the weather is being good to us. Children are very excited about our new fooze ball table. REMINDER: If your child has a medical condition e.g asthma, anaphylaxis, dietary. You MUST provide us with up to date medical plans and in date medication for your child to attend.
