PRINCIPAL’S LETTER
STUDENT LEARNING
Student reports will be distributed on Friday June 19 and
Three Way Conferences will take place on Tuesday June 23
from 3.45-5pm and Thursday June 25 from 1-8pm. School will
dismiss at 12.30pm on Thursday June 25 to facilitate the
conferences. The Three Way Conferences will be of fifteen
minutes duration, the student, teacher and parent/s are all
involved in the conference. The first ten minutes are devoted
to the student sharing their achievements and discussing their
future learning goals using the individual learning journals and
student report to support this discussion. Parents can request
to speak with the teacher alone for the last five minutes of the
conference if they desire or have the full fifteen minutes with
the teacher and the student. In the foundation to two classes
the conference may not go for the full fifteen minutes but the
teacher will gauge this with the students. Parents will be sent
an individual login code to access COMPASS to book their
conference time on Monday June 15. This is a wonderful

opportunity for teachers, students and parents to celebrate
the achievements and plan future learning goals together.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
This week I have spent time in classrooms being read to by
students which has been very enjoyable. I am particularly
pleased at our engaged and interested the students are in
reading and sharing their opinions about their books. One of
the key challenges, once students learn to read, is to keep
them engaged by finding appealing and age appropriate
books. I am pleased that our teachers are continually sourcing
books which will engage and appeal to our students. An
interesting activity parents can do with their children is to
share their favourite childhood books also remembering that
children need to be exposed to non-fiction as much as fictional
books.
COMMUNITY
Each Thursday the newsletter is posted on the front page of
the website at www.pops.vic.edu.au An alert from Tiqbiz is
also sent to advise that the newsletter is posted, the Tiqbiz
application can be utilised on computers and tablets and not
only on phones. In term two we stopped sending an email
with the PDF of the newsletter attached, primarily for the
purpose of transitioning into our new online communication
tool COMPASS. This term parents will receive an individual
login to COMPASS from which they will be able to book parent
teacher appointments, access student reports, log student
absences, ratify student absences and excursions,
communicate with teachers, access newsletters, notices and
curriculum information and eventually pay accounts. The first
stage will begin this term with parents logging into COMPASS
to book Three Way Conference appointments and to access
student reports. The next stage will be accessing the
newsletter in term three; parents will receive an email with a
link to login to COMPASS and the newsletter will be posted
there. I understand that change is often difficult to come to
terms with and can take time to learn and adjust to. Please be
assured that we are very keen to communicate effectively and
this is why we are working hard to use COMPASS as efficiently
as possible and as soon as we can. We are also receptive to
the fact that some parents may need support as we transition
and we are very happy to help in anyway we can. Please

any time by logging on to the website at www.pops.vic.edu.au
