The guidelines outline the minimum expectations for learning languages in both primary and secondary schools. The research indicates that the earlier students begin learning another language is very advantageous. Our school has always had a vibrant languages program with Italian provided to all students from Foundation to Year Six. In 2012 we reviewed the language program and from the results of 6th November 2014 Volume 42, No 35 the parent data it was decided that we would introduce an Asian language. Accordingly in term two 2013 we introduced Mandarin as an elective for students in Foundation to Six. We are now reviewing how we provide our languages program. We are investigating a different model of language learning with both Italian and Mandarin being taught and students choosing which language they want to study. All students will receive a form tomorrow to indicate which language they want to study to inform our decision making and organisation for 2015. STUDENT WELLBEING AND ENGAGEMENT We had a wonderful roll up on Friday for the final Walktober event and a healthy fruit breakfast for all the active travelers. Many thanks to the committee for planning such excellent events for the month, it was wonderful to see so many students and families enjoying being active on the way to school. Many thanks also to Miss Owen and Miss Dettman for joining the walk from Domeney. The final draw will be completed at next Monday’s assembly. The senior swimming program began yesterday and we will evaluate this program in preparation for 2015. STUDENT TRANSITION The Foundation Transition program begins this Friday morning at 9.15am and continues for the next four weeks. All enrolled students will participate in activities in the Foundation classrooms and parents are invited to attend information sessions at the same time in the library. These sessions are very valuable for both students and parents and very important in beginning the relationship between the home and school. Next Thursday November 13, we will host an information evening for students and parents of Year Six. For this evening we invite our Year Seven students to present to our Year Six students about making the transition from Year Six to Seven a positive experience. Year Seven parents also share with Year Six parents at the same time about their experiences. 06/11/14_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Park Orchards Primary School COMMUNITY We having been working with our website provider, Class Focus, to upgrade the website and tomorrow we will turn on the “new” version.
