M EN’ S C APTAIN : D AVE M AJOR
Glorious October? It maybe a quirk of nature or is it global
warming? We even had the first round of the Winter Cup being
completed by many in shirts and shorts! The warm weather has
helped the course immensely, with the greens returning to their
former glory after the necessary maintenance works carried out
by Mick Woods and his team – after a few disgruntled rumblings regarding timing of the hollow-tining and scarifying, I
must concede that a certain Mike Morley was correct in saying
that the greens will be better than ever! Well done to Mick and
all the greenkeeping staff.
There was a mixed bag to report during a busy October
schedule, where the previously undefeated friendly team succumbed to their first loss away at West Berks. The matches
were all very close and played in great spirit.
We have one more match to play against Williams GP which
will complete the fixtures for this year. Win, lose or draw the
club matches have been keenly contested and it is refreshing
to see so many players of varying skill levels enjoying themselves whilst representing Hadden Hill. I must thank Phil
Godding who has managed to juggle the selection and recruiting role whilst Captaining the friendly team in a most successful
season. We have had a squad of over 20 players who have all
at some time during the summer managed to win a point /pint!
Roll on next year – put your name down and join the team.
Talking of winners- we are the Champions! Lee Fuller announced on Saturday as the results came in from the Scratch
League. . . So promotion awaits! It all came down to the wire in
the last game of the season, away at Bicester. Where Lee
Fuller & Martin Dowzall, Dom O’Rourke & John Roper, Mark
Grootz and late call up Dave Major came away with a 2-1 win
to confirm that Hadden Hill had won the 4th Division title.
I just have to recount Mark Grootz’s tale of what he was calling
a “Ryder Cup moment”, of your Captain pulling off a “shot of
the century” on the 17th to secure a gimme birdie from fully 195
yards, guaranteeing a half to take the match and title! Yeha!
We have plenty coming up this month with Round 2 of the Winter Cup and also the winter competitions are due to commence,
so please ensure that you get your names on the sign-up
sheets as soon as possible before the 6th November.
Christmas is fast approaching and this year we will be celebrating the Christmas Classic on the 13th December with Dinner
and Music afterwards. So get busy, shine up those dancing
shoes and join us for a fun-packed evening at the Hill, all are
invited – Corinne will send more information out nearer the
time. In the meantime folks . . . Enjoy your Golf!

L ADIES ’C APTAIN : J ULIE O’S ULLIVAN
Our golfing year is now starting to slow down with all the summer
competitions and matches finished. The course looks especially
lovely at this time of year with all the trees in their Autumn
colours and we now have the winter competitions to look forward
to and to keep us busy.
The Winter Cup, which is played over 6 rounds, is a good way of
keeping up our golfing skills over the months when we might
otherwise choose to stay in the warm!!
The annual Captain’s Tankard took place at the beginning of
October. This is a competition for all past and present
captains followed by a meal in the evening. It was a very
pleasant evening with lovely food. The ladies winner
was Linda Dowzall and the men’s was our own present captain,
Dave Major. Well done all.
We played our last friendly match of the year against Badgemore
ladies at home. Up to that point we had won 3, lost 3 and drawn
3 so we had a fairly even record. I am happy to say that we won
on the day and so were very happy to end the year with more
wins that losses. Thank you so much to everyone who signed
up and played. I hope you enjoyed them all and we can look
forward to more victories next year!!
In November we can look forward to the par three team competition with lunch and also our competition with the HOGS where
we will enjoy mulled wine afterwards and get into the Christmas
spirit early. With Christmas in mind, the menu for our ladies
dinner on the 10th Dec is up on the board. The menu from Zak
looks very tasty and it would be lovely to see as many ladies as
possible coming along to enjoy the evening.
Our congratulations to Gwen Cotton for her victory in the
Women’s Institute golf knock out competition. The final was
played at North Oxford against her opponent from Studley Wood
and won on the 17th hole – well done Gwen.
Soon we will be hoping to entice some new faces onto the committee. If you feel you have some spare time and would like to
help out behind the scenes, it would be much appreciated. Let’s
hope for a mild winter again.

We played in the penultimate HOGS Handicap Qualifier of 2014, a
Stableford, on October 7th. The Division 1 winner was Nick Bell
who scored a fine 37 Stableford points, followed by David Hawkins
with 34 points and Robin Prentice with 31 points. The Division 2
winner was Alan Rance who scored 34 Stableford points, closely
followed by Tony Behan 2nd and Brian Evans 3rd, both with 31
points and decided on countback. Nick Bell’s handicap was cut to
15.4 (Playing 15). As it has fallen consistently throughout 2014 it
will be interesting to see what the committee make of it at our Rule
23 meeting on November 5th.

The Annual Trophy on October 14th was a Medal played off the
white tees reported Bob Cain. Unfortunately the weather took a
turn for the worse and it rained almost constantly making the going
very heavy. In spite of this a high turnout of 34 HOGS accepted
the challenge and some good scores were achieved. Peter Moore
won with a nett score of 72. Countback decided the runners-up.
Nick Bell 2nd, Bert Shergold 3rd and Bob Cain 4th all with 75. Captain Robin Herbert presented the prizes in his own inimitable style.
Peter’s golf clearly peaks in October as he’s now won this competition four times!

We contested The Gerald Janes Claret Jug on October 21st in the
remnants of hurricane Gonzalo, when 33 of us did our best to conquer
the Par-3 course and win this delightful little trophy. Scribe had the
pleasure of playing with the winner, Pete Sanderson. He of slight stature was almost blown away on occasions and even Roderick’s trolley
made a wind-assisted attack on its owner. Many found the conditions
and the greens rather too testing but Pete scored an amazing net 48
to claim “The Jug”. This was 9 shots clear of Norman Lister’s net 57 in
second, closely followed by Bert Shergold and Brian Evans who
shared third with a nett 58. The Captain’s Charity gained £66 which
was supplemented by a further £10 from a Golf Scratch Card comp
organized by Keith Schofield, with the winner, Ernie Els aka Clive
Raynor pocketing £10.

Our Captain’s Charity Day on October 28th was generously
sponsored by Jack Atkinson. Jack and Comp Sec John devised an interesting and novel mix of formats for 4 teams of
8 players to enjoy on a beautiful Autumn morning. John
eventually declared the “A Team” the winners and Jack duly
presented them each with a bottle of Whisky Liqueur. Some
unusual cheeses were auctioned but one was saved for Big
Cheese Comp Sec. for his organizational skills. Captain
Robin’s Charity fund gained £187, so a big thank you to
everyone who took part.
