AWAY v BARMERA - Renmark Rovers Football Club

Rover’s Home Game Newsletter
RENMARK v LOXTON NORTH - Rd 2
26 April 2015
PRESIDENT DAVE SAYS:
Well round one all over and dusted! Not the start we wanted, but we showed promise in all grades and we will improve as
the season goes on.
Under 13’s had a great tussle with Waikerie coming out on top by 21points. Best players for Renmark were Jack Ellis, Ben
Schuetze & Dane Austin, who all played well. It was great to see the under 13’s fight hard against a side with some very tall
timber.
Under 15’s came up against a formidable side with Waikerie running out winners by 101 points. Renmark's better players
were Jack Austin, who was strong with the hands & stopped a lot of Waikerie's forward thrusts. Second & third best were
Jayden Bonner and Corey Munn respectively.
Under 18’s put the only win on the day for the Rovers with a awesome display of team football, winning by 37points. Stars for
Renmark were Mitchell Jenke, Ben Pater and Riley Walter. It was a great team effort by all. Leading goal kicker for the
Rovers was Ben Pater with 2.
B-grade had a typical hard fought contest with Waikerie, only to go down by one point ! For most of the day the scores we
never far apart. Best for Renmark was Aaron Gill, 2nd was Tom Bannister and 3rd was Fraser Peters. Matt Smith chimed in
with 2 goals and played well also.
The A grade game was fierce all day with young Roly Boon going down in the first 3 minutes of the game. He sustained
severe concussion & was taken to Berri hospital. After x-rays, he was diagnosed with two fracture in his neck. We wish Roly
all the best in his recovery. The A ‘s finished the first quarter up by a goal, but in the second quarter Waikerie ran wild,
kicking 8 goals to 1. After half time we outscored them by 3 goals but the damage was done in the second quarter. The
desire and effort was there for all too see and looks bright for the rest of the season. Best for Renmark were Jarrod
Bollenhagen, with Todd Bennett 2nd and Zack Gartery 3rd. Leading goal kicker was Brodie Roesler with 3.
This week 2 players are playing their 50th senior games in Jake Anspach & Nick Carr. Both of these lads have grown up
playing for Renmark right from Auskick till now & we wish them all the best for this coming week.
Today we play Loxton North at home, which will be the Anzac weekend and also the centenary of Gallipoli.
Lest we Forget,
Birchy
NEXT WEEK: AWAY v BARMERA
REMEMBERING THE ANZACS … AND THE FALLEN HEROES
Dave Dunhill
Anzac Day is best observed as a
time of remembrance, reflection,
recognition and commemoration, not
glorification. After all, those who
took part in the Gallipoli campaign
did so during the Great War of
1914-18 with the hope that it would
be the conflict to end all wars,
and also, with a sense of futility
associated with them.
The Australian and New Zealand Army
Corps, were an integral part of the
Allied Forces, comprising at least
ten other European countries, plus
USA, Japan and the British Empire.
Their wartime opponents were largely from Germany, Austria, Bulgaria
and Turkey.
The men, and some women in a
nursing role, were people of
extreme courage who were following
orders in seeking to force the
enemy to retreat from the shores of
Gallipoli, which they bravely did.
However, the loss of lives was
shocking – of the 110 Renmark
enlistees alone who fought at
Gallipoli, 14 lost their lives.
This was one part of a dreadful
conflict, as was the Battle of the
Western Front, though the latter
did see more gain than loss. Those
brave souls fought the battles for
King and country, hoping freedom
would be achieved by their deeds.
Glorifying war is not what Anzac
Day is about. It is a commemoration
of the Anzac spirit.
Over 500 men enlisted at Renmark,
serving in all sectors of the War,
with many more than those at
Gallipoli, paying the supreme
sacrifice.
Some of the enlistees were sportsmen who played Australian Rules
Football in one or the other of
Renmark’s two teams; and quite a
few able returnees slotted back
into the local competition when it
resumed in 1919. Names such as
Jury, Anderson, Philpot, Boetcher,
Bollenhagen, Douglas, Ruediger,
Seekamp, Haynes, and Bennett were
among many who often featured in
teams.
Football had been played in 1915
with proceeds of the grand final
going to a war time patriotic fund.
It appears that Renmark Town won
the title, although results were
not published in The Murray Pioneer
at the time.
On Anzac Day (yesterday), RFL Grand
Finalists of 2014, Waikerie and
Barmera-Monash, did battle; and
today at Renmark, the Renmark
Rovers take on the Loxton North
Panthers, whose history encompasses
many returned service people from
the Second World War in a battle
far removed from that of our war
heroes in conflicts long gone.
The celebration of this 100 year
historic event may be over, but
today provides another opportunity
for remembrance.
