RSL Condemns Cartoon Parody of its
Badge
The National President of the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL)
Rear Admiral Ken Doolan today condemned the wholly inappropriate parodying
of the Badge of the RSL in the cartoon by Bill Leak published in The Australian.
“Linking our Badge with terrorists even in parody is an affront to every member
of the RSL,” the National President said. “Australians who have gone in harm’s
way to defend the freedom of expression those in the print media enjoy take
strong exception to this tasteless misuse of that freedom. Many Australians
have lost their lives protecting our democracy and its precious freedoms and to
so use the badge of the nation’s largest veteran organisation even in parody is
a disgrace.”
The National President called upon The Australian’s proprietors, editor and
cartoonist to apologise.
