MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents/Carers,
As we move through term 2, many milestones are made as students continue to improve. With this in mind, Our
District Success Team Strategy will mean that all students will benefit from Mrs Patience’s coaching sessions
which inspire excitement and confidence in reading, writing, and maths thinking and working. Warm Ups,
Sizzling Starts and coaching for NAPLAN writing and numeracy are a real hit with students as they continue their
improvement journey with inspired enthusiasm.
Premiers Reading Challenge
The Premier's Reading Challenge encourages students to develop a love of reading for life. Through the
challenge students are given an opportunity to develop their appreciation of the English language and are
encouraged to explore and enjoy a wide range of literary texts.
Students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of
Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.
Mrs Bunt will coordinate the Burpengary Meadows Challenge and all students will bring this information home for
parents to enhance involvement.
Week 3 Maths Sessions for Parents
I am sure that all who participated in these sessions develop helpful insight and took home some great strategies
to assist their children with learning and homework. Please keep an ‘eagle eye’ for the next round of Parent
Maths Sessions.
Thank you Mrs Ross.
Under 8’s Day is next Tuesday, May 19. This year’s Under 8s will host a multitude of fun activities where we
celebrate the excitement of informal learning in a fun and family atmosphere. The themed activities for 2015 are
based on Mrs Echidna’s Dilemma.
12.30pm - Family picnic in the Hall and special guest book reading (author Betty Johnston).
1.00pm – Activities in Early Learning Precinct
2.30pm – All students return to their classroom
2.40pm – Home time

Cross Country
This was a great clear day for students to demonstrate what it means to be an authentic “Meadows” student. All
students supported and encouraged each other – extraordinary team spirit – outstanding. Gratitude to all staff
who worked so diligently to make the day a success - Mr Welsh for the beautiful grounds, teachers and staff for
wonderful enthusiasm and support for students, and Ms Chadwick for holding things together in the tent. The
day was a huge success with all students doing their very best. Well done everyone! Thank you Mrs Hill for the
preparation, student skills development and organizational genius that underpinned such a successful event.
NAPLAN testing
This week on Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 May, BMSS students in Years 3 and 5 are taking
part in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is commonly known.
Skills being tested include: reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. These tests are
done here at school and are considered just another part of the curriculum. NAPLAN cannot be studied for and
students are not expected to do so. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them
know that this is a routine part of their school program, and encourage them to do their best on the day. It is
important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level
students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers
throughout Australia.
All BMSS students in Years 3 and 5 are expected to participate in NAPLAN testing.
Later in the year all students who participated, will receive an individual student NAPLAN report that you can use
to view and monitor how your child is progressing.
More information is available on the NAP website (http://www.nap.edu.au/). If you have any concerns, please
contact us through the front office.
Don’t forget breakfast in the Hall canteen on NAPLAN mornings – thank you to our sponsors, Woolworths
Narangba. Thank you Miss Leita and her helpers.
RACQ Schools Program
This road safety program is being delivered to all classes during week 5 this term, and will cover all aspects of
road safety using engaging and creative pedagogy. We are very appreciative to RACQ for making this wonderful
opportunity available to our school community.
Reconciliation / NAIDOC
Reconciliation Week – Mabo Day, Sorry Day and NAIDOC celebrations are all coming up soon.
Bringamatealong may also have some surprises waiting for our school community around June 3.

This year, our Narangba Burpengary Primary School Principals are working together to improve transitions to
school. Prior to the Easter Vacation, we held our first forum at Narangba Valley State School, involving a large
number of stakeholders who support children aged 0-5. The feedback from this forum has been compiled and
the resultant recommendations will underpin direction and future action. In response to the recommendations,
Burpengary Meadows will host the next event on Thursday May 21. This Futures Focus Forum, will formalise a
firm platform for sustainability of the philosophy and partnership. This will ensure a consistency and sustained
focus through a robust collective working to support families and children. The intent is to improve transparency
in this sector to assist families in finding information and support they may need to assist their children so that
they are developmentally ready for their first year of formal schooling, Prep – to enable them to access multiple
opportunities and be the best they can be.
Twilight Walkthrough Burpengary State College
Peter Hoehn, Principal of Burpengary State Secondary College, will host a “Twilight Walkthrough” for parents of
students in year 6. This date claimer is for Monday, June 1 at 5.00pm.
Walk Safely to School Day
On Thursday 21st May, it's Walk Safely to School Day!
All students who participate have the chance to win a Walk Safely to School Pack, which is on display in the
office.
Thank you to our Administrative Staff.
As you are all aware Angela, Mel, Mandy and Barb work very hard to ensure that students, staff, parents,
volunteers and visitors – and staff - are looked after in all things admin. Each of these staff respond to all queries
with a cheery and patient helpfulness that consistently shows professionalism and respect for others and their
needs.
We are so very fortunate to have such capable and friendly staff to brighten the front office and lighten the load –
they are the fabulous face of our school. Thank you
I look forward to the activities of the coming weeks and anticipate that you will also enjoy participating in the
events that provide students with opportunities to aspire and excel.
Sincerely
Liz Mackie PSM

Burpengary Early Years Centre
This term we will be offering two parenting courses. These are:
1.
Circle of Security:
2.
1-2-3 magic:
th
May – 16th June.
This program teaches parents of children from 2-12 years how to deal with their
children’s difficult behaviour. An easy to learn and use signalling system requires the parent to use less
talk and less emotion which in turn encourages the development of children’s ability to manage their
emotional reactions to parental boundaries. This course has three sessions that will be run fortnightly on
the mornings of 20th May, 3rd June and 17th June.
