MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents/Carers,
The term has certainly flown by with students working very hard to achieve positive behaviour and
participating in all school activities. Maths ‘warm-ups’ have every student excited about learning in
numeracy blocks! Sizzling Start competition is about to begin in the Library and Reading Groups are
working hard with targeted strategies – Guided, Modelled and Shared reading; and Decoding,
Comprehension and Inference as part of our Reading Success Team focus for 2015.
Teachers and students are beating a speedy path to the end of our second units of learning.
Learning and monitoring student achievement are continuous and assessment tasks ongoing so it is
vital that students are at school every hour of every day (excepting sickness).
Shave for a Cure
Last Friday saw the culmination of some mammoth efforts in fundraising for the Leukaemia
Foundation. Many families have been touched by this insidious disease and we hope that our effort
and fundraising contribute in some way to finding a cure.
Students, families and staff met Mr King’s challenge for a Crazy Hair Day Mohawk and raised an
astounding $10,341.32 this year.
Ms Innes – will she ever bet on an unthinkable target again!!!!! We reached $10,000 and off came
her locks.
Dr Adrian McCallum also visited to add depth to our event. He will use wind power to ice sail 4,500
kms unassisted across the Antarctic - Outer Edge Polar Challenge: Ride for Leukemia – check this
website for more information.
Thank you to all who assisted – Lukey Bear, precision clippers from volunteer hair dressers, Mel
O'Conner, Rebecca Matthews, Krystal Bailey and the crew from the foundation - the contributions to
fund raising of those 11 brave students who elected to shave their hair. This recognises the suffering
of those undergoing treatment for leukaemia and is a constant and helpful reminder for all that while
we collect once a year, the prevalence of the disease continues.
Thank you for your participation in this wonderful celebration of community thoughtfulness and
generosity. (Special thank you to Ms Breen, Ms Chadwick, Mr King, Ms Collett and Ms Hinze)

Early Years Strategy
This term, the Principals in our Narangba and Burpengary State School’s Cluster began a strategy to
work on assisting children aged 0-4years and their families to make the necessary connections with
Early Years services and providers, such that the needs of every child are best met to ensure that
their school entry to Prep sets them up for success in schooling and life. Our initial meeting with the
Early Years Providers was a great success last week and the feedback from that Forum will inform
our planned community forum next term. This is a well-researched and considered strategy which
will ensure that the connections and confidences necessary for children to achieve success are
transparent and accessible.
Thank you from Thangool State School
Principal Mr Neilson has thanked our staff and families for beautiful book donations. I am still
collecting books for my visit to Thangool next term. If you have any books at hand that will assist –
please drop them in at the front office? Thank you for helping out – this small central Queensland
community is very appreciative.
Travel Choice
Ride2School Day was a great success. We handed out 128 water bottles to riders – a great outcome
for Active Travel! As a result of 100% completions in the Hands Up Survey, our school has won
$1000 towards an Active School Travel breakfast in term 2. This is great news indeed! Ms Herbert is
our winning teacher for term 1.

Our P&C has been successful in their application for $3000 funding to assist with the construction of
shade for the year 3 spider playground. Thank you Danielle.
Harmony Day and National Day against Bullying – last Friday
Harmony Dolls are displayed – ‘holding hands’ in classroom windows around the school in a ‘walkway
of friendship’ as we celebrate unity in our multicultural community. The colour, orange was worn by
all to draw focus to the important messages and the gold coin donation will assist student leaders with
their fundraising.
Thank you Ms Heron and all who assisted with organising this important event.
Working Bee in Term 2 – May or June
There are two projects for remembering and enhancing student spaces planned for term 2.
We are developing the space to set in concrete the literacy legacy of our beloved Mrs Shirley
Abrahamson.
Additionally, we are seeking to improve the Senior Chillout Zone with an easy care surface that will
enable students to use the area safely to play chess and ‘chill out’.
If you are able to assist on a weekend with a working bee to help prepare areas
by levelling, boxing and spreading crusher dust and sand for concrete could
you please let Barbara Lucas know? Thank you
Parent Teacher Interviews
These meetings are being held in the second week of term 2. You will receive letters shortly in
relation to booking a time with your child/ren’s teacher/s.
To assist you while you meet with teachers on Monday afternoon April 27, Helping Hands have
offered free childcare for ages 18months – 4 yrs, in Chappy Room 3.00pm – 5.30pm. I you are
interested, please register at the school office by Wednesday April 22. School age children could
attend their meeting with you or perhaps use the existing before and after school care service with
Helping Hands.
Student Performance Improvement Meetings
Each semester, Mr King and I visit classrooms to talk with students - to ask them what works best for
them to enhance their learning. Students are very articulate and able to indicate a vast array of
strategies that provide them with enhanced access to learning. It is very exciting to see and hear
students use curriculum based terminology and express excitement when they are hooked into
learning!!! This feedback is then passed on to teachers to affirm the great things that they are doing
in classrooms with curriculum content, classroom practices, routines and pedagogy.
I wish you all well as we enjoy the upcoming events –
