Students are in the midst of their second unit of learning for the term and teachers have begun preparing the reports that inform parents of student progress. We know that all students at Burpengary Meadows apply their very best effort to everything they do – respecting all, believing in themselves and others and striving to do their absolute best. It is important to celebrate outstanding effort and support the ethos of work as this in itself is a solid preparation for prosperity and success in life. Our dedicated focus on Reading and Writing, Coaching, feedback and SPIMs have certainly triggered excited emersion in reading and writing while maintaining focus on maths. Underground Infrastructure Upgrade - Front of School Between now and June 30, there will be work in the front and around the school to upgrade fire hydrants. This work will enhance safety in the unlikely event of a fire. There will be an impact on carpark and admin building access. I thank you in advance for your patience while workers progress this additional safety upgrade to our facilities. All care will be taken to limit the impact on students, staff and families, however, some disruption at crucial times is inevitable. It may be worth pursuing some ‘active travel choices’ (walk, ride, scoot etc) whilst the work is in progress. http://publish.newsserv.com.au/epublisher/printfriendly.php?id=214748458203 &school=burpeng... 27/05/2015 Burpengary Meadows State School Newsletter 18 Parent Support a Talker Mrs Doyle workshopped this training for parents last week. It was great to see so many parents involved. These sessions help to change dispositions to foundational aspects of literacy acquisition and assist parents in developing their own skills in ‘new and exciting’ ways to develop confidence in assisting children with scaffolding the literacy learning process. We are planning more literacy focussed sessions for parents in the near future. Under 8’s Day was a wonderful fun-filled afternoon of engaging activities based on Betty Johnston’s “Mrs Echidna’s Dilemma”. Thank you to Mrs Murphy for organising the event and Mrs Stuart for her Welcome to Country and Mr Saleh’s Didgeridoo. Additional thanks to Mrs Betty Johnston for starting our themed day by reading her book for the family picnic, Helping Hands for Ribbon Dancing and Early Years Centre for Drumbeat activities – they were a wonderful addition to a wealth of learning experiences. Children were enthusiastic in painting, listening, colouring, kneading, twisting, shaking, sculpting, dancing, beating, cutting, gluing, sticking and blowing. There were take home painted faces, stained glass, bubble paintings and clay echidna’s (my personal favourite) – a wonderful, creative and inspiring afternoon. Thank you all teachers and teacher aides for the work in preparing and running the array of fantastic activities and cleaners for clearing and cleaning all areas of paper, paint, glitter and tinsel. Thank you to everyone who contributed bakery items to assist in the fundraising that allows us to make under 8’s so special. Lastly, thank you to everyone who came along and added to the fair atmosphere. All guests, students, families and siblings had a wonderful time. Sorry Day It is National Sorry Day on May 26. Students will participate in BMSS Sorry Day activities on June 4. They will express their thoughts, understandings and apologies on coloured hands on the oval that present our apology to the stolen generations. Thank you Mrs Heron, for organising the activity this year. Our evolving culture will continue to be enriched by whole school participation in understanding the National significance of Sorry Day – a foundational aspect of the reconciliation process as we move together to a unified future. Walk Safely to School Day It was fantastic to see the carpark on Thursday morning – with so many students and families taking part in the active travel choice of walking, riding, scooting etc, the carpark was almost empty!! Thank you to all teachers who participated and made the event fun for everyone. Thank you Mrs Keown for organising the event – there will be a rewards draw on parade this week – for active travel choice participants – 6 chances to win. SPIM (Student Performance Improvement Meetings) Students may have mentioned chatting with Mr King or Mrs Mackie of late. Meeting with 5-7 students from each class is a meaningful way for school leaders to hear first-hand from students the things that work best for them in accessing learning. Our discussions this year have focussed on reading and all aspects of reading with questions based on research from Sharratt’s; Putting the Faces on Data. http://publish.newsserv.com.au/epublisher/printfriendly.php?id=214748458203 &school=burpeng... 27/05/2015 Burpengary Meadows State School Newsletter 18 Feedback from students is synthesised, triangulated with best practice research (Hattie, Marzano et al) and presented to teachers. This process is proving a great affirmation for teachers and provides detailed information to them about the classroom practice that students find most effective in accessing and improving their learning. P&C Day This Friday is P&C Day. A day for everyone to go the extra mile to thank those hard-working and dedicated parents who consistently care for our school and contribute their time to making our school a great place for all of us to work and learn. Thank you to our esteemed P&C executive and all who work on the committees and fundraising events – around our school and community. Staff Carpark A safety decision has been made in light of urgent issues in the staff carpark where young children and students are being placed at risk. The staff carpark will be locked every afternoon to ensure children are safe. Thank you Particular thanks to those who help without being seen, classroom reading, home readers, student banking and our volunteers, cleaners, office staff and teacher aides. Thank you to our teachers, whose work extends beyond the school day – who care for and understand deeply the needs of every child in their class – and who research and apply the strategies to meet those needs. The effort of so many focussed on the pursuit of excellence and continuous improvement for the caring and compassionate students of our school community is what makes our school community unique. I continue to be amazed by the generosity of spirit, consideration for others and dedicated hard work - respect, believe and strive are alive.
