Mr. Campbell’s Students Hop to WIN!
Mr. Campbell’s students, as part of
standards-driven curriculum-based instruction read The Notorious Jumping
Frog of Calaveras County. In this Mark
Twain short story, the narrator talks to a
character, Simon Wheeler, who spins a
long-winded tale. The tale is of Jim Smiley, a man with a betting problem who
finds and trains a frog for three months.
The character ends up winning a lot of
money with this frog.
L to R: Soraida Partida, Christina Dugazon, A.J. Schiel, Tyriek Catasus, Santiago
Betancur
At the end of the unit, as a fun enrichment activity, students learned how to
create Origami jumping frogs. Students created their own frog with an open
invitation to modify, decorate, and otherwise prepare their frogs to win a
race! “Students really enjoyed the competition of racing their frogs as they
took on the persona of Jim Smiley. Winners were given prizes for their efforts and hard work,” said Mr. Campbell. Video: http://schools.polk-fl.net/

Lifting the Fog of Weather Prediction
On April 24, 2015, Mr. Bartuska was a presenter at UCF’s Initiatives in STEM - Florida
Engineering Education Conference. The conference featured keynote speakers including
an industry panel of STEM administrators
from government/corporate agencies, K-12
STEM educators, UCF STEM Professors and
interactive hands-on workshops. Mr.
Bartuska’s presentation “Bringing Real World
Weather Measurement Problems into the
Classroom” related the measurement of the
Dew Point, using a Sling Psychrometer, to
Weather Forecasting. In this case, predicting
George Bartuska
Fog in Centr al Flor ida and using the MultiCar-Pile-Ups on I-4 near Winter Haven and
the Florida Turnpike near Gainesville as "Hooks" to interest students. “I learned some
very valuable information at the conference that can be used for future classroom lessons as well as some applicable
grants I will pursue to get additional equipment and resources for the classroom,” said Mr. Bartuska.

2015 Baccalaureate Speech Competition
KHS has a tradition of allowing 3 outstanding seniors to speak to their fellow graduates during the Baccalaureate ceremony. One senior shares memories from elementary, another shares about middle school, and a third shares about high school. The
purpose of these speeches is to “relive” your 13 year career in education and connect
with your classmates about the past, present and future. This year, we have decided
to have a friendly competition to see who gets the privilege of speaking at Baccalaureate. To apply, simply complete the form below and return to Mr. Thacker by Wednesday, May 13th. Finalists will be
selected from the returned applications. Each finalist will have to give his/her speech to a panel of judges at a scheduled time. The winners (one for each category – elementary, middle, and high school memories) will be a part of the
Baccalaureate program on May 31st at Victory Church. Interested seniors can pick up an application in main office or
download from our website.
