Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC Regional Cooperation Division Latin America and the Caribbean e+i employment and income network Invitation SDC’s Employment and Income Network, Ashoka and Hystra invite you to a thematic event on: NUTRITION, VITALITY AND SOCIAL BUSINESS 18th of March 2015 Best Western HotelBern, Zeughausgasse 9, Bern (Switzerland), +41 31 329 22 22 Introduction Two billion people suffer from the “hidden hunger” in the world. So why don’t more people care about nutrition? Why do many development programs, particularly in health and education, still not include nourishment? Perhaps it is because people care about the results of vitality and wellness, not its components. They care about baby development and growth, educational and physical performance, or personal and employee productivity. To generate consumer demand for nourishing food, the connections between nourishment and those broader results must be made. Providing fully nourishing diets is already a huge challenge, yet nourishment alone is not enough to produce vitality and wellness. Indeed, health and other factors reduce nourishment absorption and often offset any benefits of “nutrition only” programs. Fortunately, many social entrepreneurs and social businesses around the world are innovating on how to deliver better nutrition and health outcomes. Objectives and audience This one-day event will be an opportunity to share the innovative approaches developed by social entrepreneurs and others and think through the questions these bring. It aims at: Creating awareness about the importance of a holistic approach to human nourishment and wellbeing, with personally measureable outcomes Learning about new opportunities for business and government to partner with social entrepreneurs in these areas, create more demand and markets at the Base of the Pyramid, and invest into new hybrid business models Presenting and improving together two specific, integrated, scalable approaches to increasing nourishment but also human wellness more broadly, among two groups of populations at risk (namely mothers and their babies, and youth in school) Introducing ideas and approaches emerging from social entrepreneurs in the broader Nutrient Value Chain, e.g. in natural eco-systems, agriculture and soil, and their relationship with nutrition More broadly, exploring opportunities for partnerships and collaborations between participants This event will bring around the table both practitioners already active in the field of nutrition, be they social entrepreneurs, corporations, impact investors, NGOs or aid agencies, and people and organizations working on related topics such as health, food security and education, not yet familiar with these topics, but interested in taking action. 1 Agenda 8:00-8.30 8:30-8:45 8:45-8:55 8:55-9:50 9:50-10:45 10:45-11:00 Session Registration Welcome and introduction by SDC Introduction: Making Nutrition Matter Measuring outcomes, creating partnerships Why nutrition alone fails: the importance of holistic approaches Break 11:00-12:00 Marketing nutrition for the BoP 12:00-13:45 13:45-16:15 Networking lunch Innovative approaches in nutrition and wellness for the BoP (participative sessions in parallel) Speakers Marlene Heeb, Global Programme Food Security Paul Murphy, CEO of Valid Nutrition Paul Murphy, CEO of Valid Nutrition Anthony Hehir, Director, Nutrition Improvement Program, Royal DSM David Aylward, Health and Nutrition, Ashoka Global Nicolas Metro, Founder of Kinome, Ashoka Fellow Olivier Kayser, Founder and Managing Director of Hystra Lucie Klarsfeld, Project Manager of Hystra Marti Van Liere, Director, Nutritious Foods for Children and Mothers of GAIN Session 1: Concrete proposals for Successful Babies and Youth Wellness Moderator: David Aylward, Health and Nutrition, Ashoka Global Panel: Paul Murphy, CEO of Valid Nutrition Dr. Zeena Johar, SughaVazhvu Healthcare, Ashoka Fellow Olivier Kayser, Founder and Managing Director of Hystra Archana Sinha, Nourishing Schools Initiative, Ashoka India With contributions from the World Food Program*, DSM, SwissRe Foundation (Angela Marti), and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation* Session 2: Social Entrepreneurs’ models in the Nutrient Value Chain Moderator: Stephanie Schmidt, Changemaker Alliances Ashoka Europe Panel: Curt Bowen, Co-founder of Semilla Nueva, Ashoka Fellow Nicolas Metro, Founder of Kinome, Ashoka Fellow Liisa Petrykowska, Managing Director of Ignitia, Ashoka Fellow 16:15-17:00 Wrap- up 17:00-18:00 Networking cocktails * Speakers to be confirmed Registration Please register at your earliest convenience and latest by February 27th, 2015 by using the following link: https://fr.surveymonkey.com/s/EventNutrition.
