Good Advice
Hottest Cosmetic Surgery Procedures
by Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D.
Now that the colder months are approaching and the kids
are settled into their school routine, this is the perfect time to
have the cosmetic surgery procedure you’ve always wanted. Diet
and exercise are the best ways to help stay healthy and keep in
shape, but supplementing a healthy lifestyle with cosmetic
surgery procedures will leave you in the best shape that you can
be in…healthy and beautiful both inside and out!
Breast augmentation, breast lifts and breast reductions
provide beautiful, natural-looking results. Combining these
procedures with liposuction, tummy tuck, body lift, facelift,
eyelid lift or other non-surgical services is most effective.
Regardless of which procedures you select, my focus remains
to make my patients as happy and as beautiful as they can
be by turning back the hands of time in a caring, safe and
supportive environment.

As the seasons are changing, this is the perfect time to seek help with those
last few inches that you can’t seem to lose. Body Contouring can be the answer
to reshaping those undesirable areas of your body. The most common body
contouring technique is liposuction and, utilizing the latest and most advanced
products, your recovery is fast. The sooner you act, the sooner you’ll look fantastic.

and show off a younger
and more vibrant you!
The hottest surgical techniques to make you look younger include eyelid lifts,
facelifts, deeper laser resurfacing, and rhinoplasty. The eyelid lift only takes
about an hour and can give a very youthful appearance to both the upper and
lower lids. A facelift, whether it is mini, lower, or full lift can take years off of
facial appearance. A facelift is great way to pull up the excessive skin, rejuvenate
the neck and lift the jowls. Mini or modified facelifts are often performed on
much younger patients before the signs of aging are advanced. Overall, the
natural look is of utmost importance. We can often combine laser resurfacing
procedures and rhinoplasty to complete a full facial rejuvenation. In addition,
injections work well to eliminate facial lines and wrinkles, including; Botox
Another avenue to consider is having a Tummy Tuck
(Abdominoplasty), especially effective post-pregnancy or after
significant weight loss. This procedure improves abdominal contouring and can
have you in great shape in a very short period of time. Abdominoplasty is very
effective in reducing or eliminating stretch marks, skin excess and for correcting
weakening of the abdominal muscles. Most women who have had children will
have some laxity of the abdominal wall and will experience excellent results.
You will have a flatter and thinner abdominal profile and be able to show off that
terrific figure at the holiday parties.
Now is the best time to get into your best possible shape for the upcoming holidays and show
off a younger and more vibrant you! I offer complimentary consultations at my Woodbury,
Southampton and Manhattan offices. To schedule an appointment, you can call 516.364.4200

Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can
actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.”
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the
post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can
protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so
weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including
sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles.
ing breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift
is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast
reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation,
combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. For those patients

RENEW YOUR FITNESS GOALS
Here’s some advice from Barbara Brenseke, a strength
and conditioning coach and owner of Train For The
Game L.I. in Bellmore: Even if you had a good start in
January and kept your resolve through the summer,
the back-to-school craziness and endless procession
of holidays of fall can cause even the most dedicated
fitness buff to stop making fitness a priority. But instead of thinking, I’ll start over in January, use these
“three Rs” to make the fall a time to renew your fitness
goals.
1. Re-assess: Consider what you’ve accomplished so
far and what new action you need to stay on course
with your goals. How can you fit fitness in with your
other activities and obligations—and fewer daylight
hours? Learn something new: take a new exercise
class, learn a new sport or attend a nutrition or health

Kate Corrigan
Musician/Songwriter/Breast Cancer Advocate
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Bellerose in a big Sicilian family with lots of
love, food and music. All my siblings played piano and/or
guitar and everyone sang at family gatherings. I now live in
Hicksville with my husband, Patrick, and have three grown
children.
What part does music play in your life?
During my college and young adult years, I wrote and performed my own songs as well as popular folk-rock songs in
clubs in the Port Jefferson/Stony Brook area. My music reflected the ups and downs of my life. I guess you would say
I process the world through my music.
In 2010, you wrote a song that was inspired by your experience with breast cancer.
After going through a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, I realized how blessed I was to have such great
doctors and so much support from friends and total strangers who had undergone similar surgery. I was also fortunate
enough to be able to help other women who were patients
in the medical office where I work as they went through
breast cancer treatment. So I wrote a song called “We Believe.” I hope my song will be an anthem for people who
have breast cancer and give them hope that they will make
it through this very tough journey. I’ve sung the song at
events sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and a Breast Cancer Victory Day
celebration at Mather Hospital.
Is the recording of “We Believe” available for purchase?
Yes, I’ve recorded the song onto a CD and it’s also available
on iTunes. I donate all profits from the CD sales to The
American Cancer Society and Bravehearts, an oncology
camp for women. Anyone interested in purchasing a CD can
send me an email at [email protected].
education seminar.
2. Re-connect: Find ways to re-establish that emotional high toward your goals and keep the momentum going. Sign up for an event to complement your
health and fitness goals, perhaps a Thanksgiving Day
Turkey Trot or a triathlon. This will keep your motivation high throughout the year and lead to more
confidence in your goal-setting/goal-achieving cycle.
3. Re-assert: Change your mindset from making
a resolution to making a commitment. A personal
commitment is much more powerful than a resolution and can have a huge impact on motivation.

Susan Isaacs
Pitch Perfect in Goldberg Variations
Writing a novel in first person is hard.
Unless you’ve tried it, that might seem counter-intuitive. After all, we speak in
first person. It’s how we write letters and emails, how we type tweets and texts.
But telling an entire story in first person requires almost impossible finesse.
The writer must manage to make it sound as natural as conversation yet include
only the details necessary to tell the story, and offer them in tantalizing bites.
Layers of perception must be woven in so deftly the reader understands that
the narrator might not be as reliable as he thinks he is. Hardest of all is establishing a voice and maintaining it for the entire book.
In Goldberg Variations, Susan Isaacs does it pitch perfectly. Four times.
Told in first person by all four fascinating characters, this wise, witty, relationship-driven novel is a truly original family saga. At the heart of it is Gloria
Goldberg Garrison, an ice-cold business tycoon who’s as elegant as any grand
dame in literature, but nastier than a feral mutt with his teeth in your leg. Approaching eighty with no one to take over her very successful beauty makeover
business, she reaches out to her three twenty-something grandchildren, who
are practically strangers to her.
Gloria summons them from New York to her mansion in Santa Fe to determine which one is fit to inherit her multi-million dollar business. But instead of
fawning, flattering and competing for her approval,
the grandchildren knock her for a loop. They are not
interested.
Still, the offer sets in motion an awakening in each
of them, and the reader gets to take the journey as
they grow and change.
Isaacs got the idea for the book while on a journey herself. She was on a flight listening to Goldberg
Variations, a classical composition by Johann Sebastian Bach, when it occurred to her that it would be a
great title for a novel. “As far as ideas, my theory is
that the subconscious does most of the work,” says
Isaacs. “At very least it’s a great collaborator. And by
the time I got off the plane I knew I was going to
write about a family named Goldberg.”
The author admits that her first instinct was to write
the book in third person, but had second thoughts.
“As soon as I switched it to first, it came alive.”
To get inside the head of the main character, whom
Isaacs describes as “chic, intelligent, cruel and cold,”
she asked herself, “How does a terrible person become a terrible person?” The result is a richly layered character who’s entirely relatable, despite her harsh persona.
The grandchildren are equally fascinating. Daisy, the oldest,
works in the film industry as a story editor for Paramount. Smart
and perceptive but not entirely in touch with her own loneliness, Daisy can be relied on for visual perspective, including this
view of her grandmother’s home:
Speaking of beige, the hallway she sent me down was just
that color. Tasteful. You think beige is always beige, but some
luxe magic happens when it’s on the walls of rich people’s houses that doesn’t happen in the post office.
Daisy’s brother Matt is handsome and charismatic enough to

attract his grandmother’s attention, especially since he reminds her of her favorite son. As a public relations manager for the New York Mets, charm comes
easily to him. And the decision about his profession came easily to Isaacs, who
calls herself “a huge Mets fan.”
The character who locks horns most with Gloria is Raquel Goldberg, a halfLatina, all-Catholic Legal Aid attorney. With her grandmother’s courage and a
conscience all her own, she stands up for herself and cousins, while coming
to grips with her career dissatisfaction and her love life troubles. But clearly,
Gloria’s persona is a catalyst for her.
God, it was amazing how each and every time a thought about Gloria Garrison entered my head, I’d explode about something. And not only furious
over her wrongs. She also served as a burning fuse that reignited every hostile
thought I’d ever had on any subject at all.
Those familiar with some of Susan Isaacs’s other books—such as Compromising Positions, Lily White, Shining Through, After All These Years and As
Husbands Go—might not be surprised to learn that Goldberg Variations is as
thematic as it is entertaining. Exploring issues of faith and forgiveness, this
novel is an intricately woven family tapestry that will delight book club readers,
who are always eager for the kind of depth and moral dilemmas that serve as
prompts for discussion.
Smart readers will find Goldberg Variations enchanting from beginning to
end. As far as what happens to the characters after the last page, Isaacs says,
“You know what I know. I don’t own what happens after I write the book. The
reader and I are co-owners.” O

What To Do After a Breast Cancer Diagnosis?
You have just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Maybe your mother had it,
maybe a close friend or acquaintance had it, but this time it’s different. This time,
it’s you. Now what?
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except
for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the U.S. will develop invasive
breast cancer during their lifetime, according to The American Cancer Society. It
is a cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry
milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and
women, although male breast cancer is rare, according to the National Cancer
Institute. No two cases of breast cancer are alike, which makes treatment distinctive for each patient diagnosed.
“Breast cancer is not one disease and is unique for each person diagnosed,”
according to Hillary Rutter, Director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. “The
course of treatment might be different for each person but there are evidencebased standards of care for different types of breast cancer.”
The first few days after diagnosis are a time to work on a game plan and develop a way to tackle treatment, as well as build an emotional support system. It
is a time for researching information relative to your specific diagnosis, finding an
advocate to accompany you to doctor visits and review treatment options after
second and even third medical opinions.
Obtaining a
second or even
third opinion is
not a professional
slap in the face to
any doctor.
Gather Facts Relevant to Your
Diagnosis
Feeling overwhelmed after a breast cancer diagnosis is extremely common. A critical life change has
occurred and as a new patient you are being asked
questions in medical terms that sound like a foreign
language. Educate yourself about the specifics of your
own cancer and how to treat it.
“There are multiple treatment options available to
the patient and there are several clinical and histopathologic variables that determine which course of treatment is recommended for a patient,” explains Julie
Fasano, M.D., Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Commack. “The size
of her tumor, the hormone receptor, whether or not there is lymph node involvement, her age and underlying medical comorbidities are all variables that inform
therapeutic decision making. That is why breast cancer is unique to every patient
and there may be multiple treatment options for a particular patient.”
Too often newly diagnosed patients waste valuable time researching information that does not even apply to their diagnosis. Having a concrete grasp of your
type of cancer and the stage is paramount to making informed decisions about
treatment options.
Bring a Second Set of Eyes and Ears
Whether it is a friend of family member, many patients often benefit from a
second set of eyes and ears at their doctor visits to take notes during medical appointments. However, it is not uncommon for this newfound need to bring about
a role reversal that many female patients are uncomfortable with.
“I find that my breast cancer patients’ immediate concerns are not for themselves but are for their spouses and children,” states Dr. Fasano. “They are so

used to playing the role of caregiver. It is difficult for them to have to rely on
others during treatment.”
While it may cause momentary anxiety asking someone to fill this role, finding
an advocate who can help you fill out medical forms, jot down notes, as well
as ask questions you may forget, could be an important part of your treatment.
“There are many questions to ask before your surgery, and knowledge is power.
Always take someone with you so you can clarify what you think you heard,”
stresses Geri Barish, President of 1in9, Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition
and Executive Director of Hewlett House. “Write down your questions before you
go so you do not forget, and take notes.”
In addition to bringing an appointment buddy, many doctors recommend bringing a tape recorder to appointments, as long as there is doctor consent. At the
very least, either the patient or their buddy should take notes to ensure important
details are not missed.
Get A Second, or Third Opinion
“Most patients usually get the initial referral by their primary care doctor or
gynecologist. These physicians are usually an excellent referral source and they often seek specialists whom they know and think will work well with the patient,”
explains Patricia Farrelly, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery,
Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and surgeon at Stony Brook’s Carol M.
Baldwin Breast Care Center. “Word of mouth by friends and/or support groups, as
well as insurance companies can also be helpful. If one is not comfortable with the
physician they are seeing, they again can be encouraged to seek other doctors.”
Many patients, surprisingly, are hesitant to reach out to other doctors for a second or third opinion. Experts have cited that many patients feel they do not want
to upset or offend their diagnosis physician by having other consultations with
different doctors. Obtaining a second or even third opinion is not a professional
slap in the face to any doctor. There are a number of reasons multiple opinions
are important, mostly because you should have a grasp of every treatment option
available to you before you make a decision to begin.
“Breast cancer is considered one of the most treatable cancers and much research has been done to better understand this disease. There are different combinations of treatment tailored to the type of cancer and the stage at which it was
diagnosed,” according to Lynette LeePack, M.S., N.P., CBCN a nurse practitioner
at Stony Brook University Hospital. “Breasts surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other health care professionals devise a plan of care tailored
to these patients.”
Before consulting any doctor about another opinion, have copies of all your
medical records, mammograms, test results and pathology slides. This will help to
provide the doctor with a complete picture of your condition thus far.
Having an open line of communication with your physician is a critical aspect of
your treatment plan. Avoid forgetting all the questions that jump into your mind
after the initial diagnosis by writing them down. If you don’t know where to start,
refer to page 16 for a listing of questions to help navigate through the first few
doctor visits after your initial breast cancer diagnosis. O

Dorothy
A
s I write this story, I am glued to the television watching
the Summer Olympics in London. It’s so inspiring to
watch these dedicated athletes perform amazing feats
of talent and strength. It’s emotionally uplifting to hear
the stories of how they overcame tremendous odds to
get where they are today. And it’s also fun to see which
athletes emerge as the superstars.
It brought me back to the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria,
when a relatively unknown young athlete won the gold medal in figure
skating and almost overnight became “America’s Sweetheart.” From her
signature “Hamill Camel” spin to her immensely popular wedge haircut,
no one who watched her historic performance can forget the 19-year-old
Dorothy Hamill’s breathtaking routine. Several weeks later, the three-time
U.S. figure skating champion went on to win the World Figure Skating
Championship in Göteborg, Sweden and was later inducted into the U.S.
Olympic Hall of Fame.
Behind the stardom and glitter, though, was a personal story of sacrifice,
personal struggle and heartache, but true to the Olympic tradition, the
always smiling and cheerful Dorothy Hamill overcame the odds that
plagued her throughout her life.
Today’s young athletes can take advantage of many more opportunities
for funding and sponsorship, but back when the young Dorothy was in
training, her parents and siblings struggled and sacrificed to make sure she
had the right coaches, spent her summers training in the most prestigious
facilities, and had the proper equipment and costumes. Both of her parents
suffered from undiagnosed depression which led to drinking issues, and
this, in turn led to quarrels and fights that were ever-present in Dorothy’s
childhood. She adored her parents—especially her mother’s athleticism
and her father’s musical talents—but their marriage was constantly being
tested under the strain of ensuring that Dorothy continued her training.
The rink was the one place where young Dorothy found her escape.
Dorothy’s grueling training schedule often took her away from home for
weeks or months at a time. Her mother would sometimes accompany her,
leaving Dorothy’s brother and sister in the care of her father. The family
managed to make ends meet but had little extra money, so the traveling and
living away from home added to the family’s already large financial burden.
Throughout her years of training, her mother was insistent that Dorothy
receive a decent education, and this often conflicted with her rigorous
training schedule. Later, as a single mother raising her own daughter,
Dorothy came to understand and appreciate the sacrifices and difficulties
her own mother—and father—took on to make sure that Dorothy was able
to achieve her dreams.
After winning the gold medal, Dorothy’s life changed forever. She became
an instant celebrity and the commercial endorsement opportunities started
pouring in. Over the years, she appeared in a series of TV specials with
stars like Gene Kelly, Perry Como and Andy Williams, as well as a televised
production of Romeo and Juliet on Ice, for which she earned an Emmy
award in 1984. Ladies Home Journal named her “The Most Trusted Sports
Figure in America.” She also got to hobnob with the rich and famous. Who
can forget the 1982 headlines announcing Dorothy Hamill’s marriage to
heartthrob Dean Paul Martin, a member of the band Dino, Desi & Billy (with
Desi Arnaz, Jr.) and son of the popular crooner and “Rat-Pack” member
Dean Martin. Though the two divorced several years later, they continued
to be very close until his untimely death in a plane crash in 1987.
Dorothy married sports physician Ken Forsythe in 1987 and the two had a
daughter, Alexandra. When the Ice Capades approached bankruptcy in the
early 1990s, Hamill and Forsythe purchased the company and revamped
the show. Dorothy used her connections to bring in top skaters, and
although she was now a producer, she also starred in the performances.
In 1995, when Disney’s “World on Ice” provided stiff competition, Dorothy
was forced to sell the Ice Capades and declare bankruptcy. Dorothy also
found herself going through another divorce.
Over the years, through business deals that didn’t pan out and a string
of health issues including depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD),
osteoarthritis and a diagnosis of breast cancer, Dorothy Hamill has not lost
her “can-do” attitude and has continued to capture the public’s imagination.
She is now in a loving marriage, lives in Baltimore, spends the winters in
California, and runs a skating camp in Nantucket during the summer. She
has the time to spend on charitable causes and her cherished daughter
Alexandra is now 23. Dorothy’s mother, with whom she has a warm and
caring relationship, is still alive. These days, Dorothy continues to travel and
speak and performs for charity. Although she sometimes feels guilty about
not being as active as before, she enjoys spending her time helping others.
I had the pleasure of catching up recently with Dorothy and she was
as modest and charming as ever as she shared some old memories and
caught me up on her current activities.
How did the famous Dorothy Hamill haircut come about?
The haircut came about mostly because I wouldn’t let my mom brush
my hair when I was a little girl because my hair was always so tangled,
so I got a pixie cut. My mom always wanted me to have short hair but
I wanted to grow it out. I was 14 and it didn’t like the way I looked. So I
went through fashion magazines to find a new look. At that time, Vidal
Sassoon was popular for his short, “wash ‘n wear” haircuts, meaning no
more rollers or hairspray. I made an appointment with celebrity hairstylist
Yusuke Suga. It was right before the Olympics, and I loved the haircut and
felt very stylish. He continued to cut my hair and we became fast friends
until he passed away 22 years ago. He was the sweetest man and the most
incredibly talented hair stylist.
The Dorothy Hamill doll was a huge hit when it was introduced in 1977. Do
you still have one?
I probably have a few floating around in storage. I always felt “why me?”
I remember going through the process. I had to approve the final design,
and I was surprised that it actually looked like me! After the Olympics, I was

walk down the street without someone recognizing me.
Now it seems like another person, another lifetime.
How has the world of competitive skating changed
today?
It’s hard to even say what has stayed the same!
First of all, now there are no compulsory figures
and those took four to five hours a day just to
keep them perfected—they were 50% of the
entire score. If you didn’t do those well, you
didn’t have a chance at winning. We were
amateurs—certainly a lot more innocent. Now
everyone is subsidized and there are massive
sports programs. Athletes can a lot of prize
money in competitions. So you can earn
money to pay for your lessons. By the time I
finished my Olympics, my parents were in so
much debt. It was nice after the Olympics to
perform in ice shows and make some money.
The whole amateur/professional component
has changed. After the Nancy Kerrigan incident,
skating on television became enormously popular
and ratings went through the roof, so there’s a lot of
money to be made with sponsorships. Skaters wanted to
earn money and producers didn’t care about quality.
Tell me about the Ice Show you performed in a few days after 9-11.
We were scheduled to do an Ice Show at the Kennedy Center in
Washington, D.C., but it was really tough to go on with the show. We were
all so stunned, and looking at the big picture, this meant absolutely nothing.
But the Kennedy Center felt that “the show must go on” and the audience
was so appreciative. Maybe it was a place that people felt they could come
to escape the awful events of 9-11 and all the horror on television. We
really didn’t think anyone would show up, but the show was poetic and
lovely and uplifting. So it was really nice that everyone enjoyed it—the
performers as well as the audience.
When did you first understand the depression that plagued your family?
The medical community takes depression seriously, but there is still a
stigma associated with it. But it’s real, and like any other medical condition,
the more you can be open about it and deal with it, the better the outcome—
especially with all the medications that are available to treat it. It’s different
for each person, but when it comes on, you often don’t know till it’s too
late and then you don’t have the energy to help yourself. I am
lucky that I found a doctor in Baltimore to help me through
it. Especially as a single mom who was on the road a lot,
I didn’t have nurturing people around to help.
In January 2008, you were diagnosed with breast
cancer.
Yes, but I was really lucky to have been diagnosed
and treated at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer
Center three months after a study had come out
recommending a new medical protocol. If the
diagnosis had come just three months earlier,
the protocol would have been more extreme.
I’ve had two surgeries, chemotherapy and
radiation, but it’s been more than four years
since the initial diagnosis and I’m cancer-free. My
mom had breast cancer 30 years ago and she is
also still doing well.
Note: Dorothy Hamill has lent her name to
many cancer-related programs and events.

Tell me about your I-skate program.
I am passionate about my volunteer work with the adaptive
skating program at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Maryland. It
helps kids with varying degrees of challenges from mild autism to cerebral
palsy to spina bifida. It’s so much fun to share the experience of skating with
these courageous children. Most people wouldn‘t think that someone in a
wheelchair could skate, but we’ve been able to give them that experience.
We’re going into our fourth season, and it’s incredible to see the kids grow
and the program expand—and we need to raise a whole bunch of money. I
not only love working with youngsters, but I also love to see their parents
on sidelines, watching as their kids go from crutches to skating without
support. Some families drive several hours to give their kids the experience.
What is the most important piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
If I could have done anything differently, I would have really tried not to
make all my business associates my best friends. I got very emotionally
attached to my business associates, and when the business is gone, the
emotional pain is worse when they are also close friends. Friends are there
for you no matter what. X

A SKATING LIFE: MY STORY
by Dorothy Hamill
I could feel my mom’s resentment growing, having to live away from home and struggle to make ends meet.
She glared and snarled at me at the rink if she didn’t think I was working hard enough. I knew I had to make
it worth her while. But at the same time, I felt there wasn’t anything that would make her happy. Yet she was
capable of such love and sacrifice that when I think about it now, it still breaks my heart.
It was 1976. There were no professional teams in women’s basketball. There was no woman in the world of
golf I could look to for an example. The sports pages barely acknowledged figure skating as a sport. To the
sports writers, who were primarily men, our competitions seemed frivolous … It would be another sixteen
years before athletes competing in the Olympics would be allowed to earn money.

LONG ISLAND WOMANrOctober 2012r 25
by David Lefkowitz
Through nearly five decades, Jennifer Warnes has weathered every
side of the music-industry storm,
from being snugly in the eye of it
(singing on four Oscar-nominated songs and inking a deal with
Clive Davis’ Arista Records), to being blown off course by shifting
musical tastes and radio playlists,
to stepping out in the cool aftermath, where she can follow the
paths she chooses. That’s where
the 65-year-old singer-songwriter
is now, having traded life in Los
Angeles for a recent move back
to her great-grandfather’s birthplace in Utica, New York. Still
writing, still recording, still touring and about to make her first,
and only, local appearance in decades, Warnes spoke about flying
on the changing winds of a long
career in music.
“I don’t know that I am in the music business
anymore,” she admits, “because I don’t know where
it is. There’s no there there. There’s no door I can
knock on and say `How can I plug into the system?’
There’s no system. So how does any human being
change their life to be productive and also accept reality? The answer is always, `go within.’
“Like most people of my generation, I’m in a huge
transition, a huge transformation. It has nothing to
do with my age; it has so much to do with what’s going on in the world. And anyone who’s in the middle
of this Waring blender, this soup, will understand.
A lot of people are in a massive shift. And if you’re
brave, and you’re an adventure seeker – which my
generation always was – it’s kind of exciting. But I
have no name for it.”
Certainly, Warnes bristles at naming this stage of
her career a comeback or return. “I’ve been touring
every year for the last five years, so it’s not actually a
comeback. I took some time off because my mother
had passed away, but I was recording all that time.”
JENNIFER
WARNES
Where She
Belongs
Nevertheless, the death in 2001 of Warnes’ “significant other” – her mom – pushed her focus from
music to family for nearly half the preceding decade.
“9/11 occurred in 2001, and that’s the year she died.
So the combination of a number of things put me in
a genealogical search. I scanned 8,000 photographs and put together the history of my
family. During that process, I got an offer from
the YMCA in Rome, New York, to do a mentorship program in the music department. I
didn’t really want to go to Rome in the middle
of December, but the fellow at the YMCA said
he would help me locate my father’s home
in Utica. So I went back east, and I found a
huge chunk of my history there, including all
these musicians from Wales. All the graves are
there – it’s a really stunning story. I sang in this
church with a pipe organ that my great-grandfather found.
“Just a lot of puzzle pieces got completed,”
recalls Warnes, “and it became the focus of
my attention – doing this for my family. I don’t
know how the next five or six years went, but
they were involved with a karmic return to my
roots. To complete that, I moved back to my
home of my childhood, and I’m living there
now. Still, all along, I’m making music. The
media gauges when an artist surfaces as being important, when their head bobs up out of
the water. But for us, the more magical part of
our life is under water. It’s a continuous string
of activity that has creative expression, and it
also has public expression.”
Which is one reason a high-school friend
suggested she get back out and tour, even
promising to make the all arrangements and travel
together. That was ten years ago, and Dee Perez has
stayed Warnes’ tour manager ever since. “Every year,
we go out on a little trip,” says Warnes. “They take
me and my band, and that comfort makes it possible
to go.”
However, cautions Warnes, fans coming to her
concerts shouldn’t expect anything resembling a
greatest-hits package. “Don’t come if you want to
hear, `I’ve had the Time of My Life’ or `Up Where
We Belong,’” she says. “You can’t duplicate those
kinds of experiences with two players. Twenty years
ago, when commerce dominated artists and turned
people into product, we had to sing what was commercially acceptable, music that fit into a genre, in
order to keep our jobs. We allowed ourselves to be
marketed as product rather than as people in order
to fit into the system. But with the rise of the internet, the whole nation didn’t meet in front of the TV

of YouTube to discover what they actually liked as
individuals. So artists have changed in that regard. It’s
based on individual preference.
“So this is the person I’ll bring to the stage on Long
Island,” Warnes promises, “my individual unique self.
I won’t be singing through a veil of commercial formula, or through a veil of what I expect you want, or
what I used to expect of myself. Who I am today is
entirely different from 1983, 1987 . . . But if I do step
on-stage prepared and ready to enjoy myself in song,
then hopefully, everyone else will, too.”
Although Warnes has visited New York to see her
old school friend, painter Laurie Munn, who lives in
East Hampton, she honestly can’t recall the last time
she performed in concert `round these parts. “I was
in Boston with Stevie Goodman before he passed,”
Warnes recalls, “and I remember doing `Song of Bernadette’ around 1981-82 with Tom Rush and a bunch
of friends at the Boston Pops. But otherwise, I’ve just
visited Laurie. She vowed to become a famous painter,
and I vowed to become a famous singer. And lo and
behold, we did that – sort of!”
Though Warnes speaks merrily of her experience
singing with Bob Dylan on an outtake of “Every Grain
of Sand” (“he said, `Just sing along,’ so I sang along,
and it was pitiful, horrible singing. A dog was barking
in the pool room, and that’s the track that appears on
The` Bootleg Series!’”), and working with John Cale
on her first Warner Brothers album (“he taught me
that any sound in the world is a possible addition to
the painting that you’re going to make”), she is protective and almost reverent when discussing her old
friend and most significant collaborator, Leonard Cohen. “A friendship, to me, is so sacred,” Warnes says,
“that I would never attempt to make a bullet statement about a friend. That would be a disservice to
Leonard. Not only that, it’s impossible to do that with a
soul, with a person, with a life. I’ve known him for 40
years. It would be folly for me to try to sum him up in a
sentence, so let’s not go there.
He’s a wonderful, wonderful
man and a great artist.”
Asked why she connected
so specifically to his art, leading to her acclaimed 1986 album of Cohen covers, Famous
Blue Raincoat, Warnes replies,
“We just got on. The bell rang
when we were together. He
has a rich kind of cello-ish
voice, and mine’s kind of a
bell-like, clarion voice, and
they complemented one another. It’s like asking, `Why
are the Beach Boys together?
`Why are the Everly Brothers together?’ Because they
sound good. From the moment we first sang together,
it was, `Oh, well, that’s easy.
And that’s always there.”
As for her personal life,
Warnes is happily single and living alone. “I’m a heterosexual
without children,” she laughs.
“My mother was for many
years my significant other, and I
took her around the world with
me. Now I live adjacent to my
niece, a writer, who has seven
children, so she’s doing what our generation could not
do, and my goal is to help her get off the ground. But
I’ve loved many people in my lifetime deeply and passionately, and I’m very, very proud of it.”O

Jenny Sings Lenny
Famous Blue Raincoat is the album that broadened the appeal of the music of Leonard Cohen
and was a turning point in the career of Jennifer Warnes.
For those unable to discover the beauty and magic of Leonard Cohen’s lyrics and music behind
his deep and gravely voice, Ms. Warnes opens the door of discovery by wrapping her exquisite
vocals around his brilliant songs on this stunning album.
Every song on Famous Blue Raincoat is a gem and Jennifer Warnes lovingly embraces each one
without over-singing them. She gives each song exactly what they need and deserve. Standout
cut on this work of perfection is the beautiful “Song of Bernadette. “ The 20th Anniversary
Edition includes four additional songs including a touchingly stripped down version of “If It Be
Your Will.”
This album holds up beautifully after more than twenty years and deserves to be in everyone’s
music collection.

An evening with
Jennifer Warnes
“Her voice is like California weather; filled with
sunlight, but there’s an earthquake behind it.”
(Leonard Cohen)
Multiple Grammy and Oscar award-winning artist
Jennifer Warnes has recorded some of the most
popular and beautiful songs of her age. Her duets
with Joe Cocker, “Up Where We Belong” from An
Officer and a Gentlemen, and with Bill Medley “(I’ve
Had) The Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing, are
love songs for generations.
Her versions of Leonard Cohen songs on her album
Famous Blue Raincoat are renowned for inspiring
arrangements and stripped-down vocal beauty.This
is her only New York area appearance and her first
concert on Long Island in decades.
