We need the Olympics! The Olympics, the end all dream for so many of the players we work with on a day to day basis. Nothing makes us feel better than the official Olympic motto. Citius, Altius, Fortius – Faster, Higher, Stronger. The Olympics puts into perspective the reason for all of our sacrifice, hard work, sweat and tears. We hungered to see Walsh/May‐Trainor defeat the younger, taller, quicker players. We hoped that the US would repeat the medals of 2008. We went to London with a full complement of teams, only Brazil qualified the same number of teams. The US had every reason to dream of going Gold for the men’s and women’s teams in both indoor and beach but disaster struck in the form of a pulled muscle here, a tough draw there and the gold medal match that just got away. Kessy/Ross beat the top ranked Brazilian team to set up the all USA Women's Beach final. Walsh/May Trainor just continued to get better over the tournament and only lost one set in their entire Olympic career! See‐
ing them win that 3rd Gold Medal raised our National blood pressure and electrified all who witnessed the tournament. The Gold Medal match for our women’s indoor team was difficult to watch. Didn’t you think that after the women won the first set so easily that they were destined for gold? Unfortunately, the women went down in four only proving once more that every point must be won and nothing can be taken for granted. The men’s team, even after finishing 1st in their pool, found themselves in a tough draw and ended their Olympic competition with a 5th place overall finish. Our Olympic teams will also see a change in the head coaches position as Hugh McCutcheon will move on to the University of Minnesota, and our men’s head coach, Alan Knipe heads back to his Cal State Long Beach job. So what happens next? Our tasks begin; it is our task to develop great players like Destiny Hooker and Sean Rooney; to secure top quality coaches and take Brazil by storm. We have much to accomplish in the next four years and the clock is already tick‐
ing. So do you think the next volleyball phenomenon will come from the Great Lakes Region? Or how about you, Coach, are you destined to be the next Olympic Coach? Stay tuned…

2012 Volleyball Extravaganza
On August 12th, the Great Lakes Region held our annual “Volleyball Extravaganza” at Br. Rice High School. The Extravaganza is a mini convention for our Junior Club Directors, Coaches and Officials and is provided to our members FREE OF CHARGE! This years speakers covered such topics as Strength Training, Injury Prevention, College Recruiting, A Three Dimensional Approach To Becoming The BEST you can be, as well as Developing and Training Setters on the Junior Club side. And for the Officials we offered topics geared towards the art of officiating. In attendance were approximately 230 coaches, directors and officials. We hope that all came away with fresh ideas as well as new view points to make their 2013 season a successful one. A LOOK AT THE DAY! Photos courtesy of Anthony Graham

USA Volleyball proudly announced our own Mike Hulett as its 2012 Harold T. Friermood “Frier” Award recipient, the organization’s most prestigious honor, at the 67th Annual Dorothy Boyce Awards and Recognition Banquet at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center. The Dr. Harold T. Friermood “Frier” Award, named in honor of the organization’s second president (1952‐55), highlighted the evening of awards. The Frier Award is presented to an individual for long‐time (minimum of 30 years), significant ser‐
vice to the sport of volleyball with at least 15 years of leadership positions at the national level. Hulett has a long history within the USA Volleyball leadership, along with serving as a pioneer coach for the U.S. Sitting Volleyball programs. He began his Paralym‐
pic coaching career as head coach of the U.S. Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team in the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics. He repeated this task as head coach for the U.S. Men’s Sitting Team in the Sydney Paralympics in 2000. In 2003, Hulett helped start the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team. After some early struggles in international competition, he developed his players in a team of medal winners. Hulett guided the squad to the bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, which led to him be‐
ing selected the 2004 U.S. Olympic Committee Paralympic Coach of the Year. After leading the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team to a fifth place at the 2006 Sitting Volleyball World Championships in Nether‐
lands, Hulett mentored his squad to the bronze medal at the 2008 World Organization Volleyball for Disabled Intercontinen‐
tal Cup in Egypt. Things only continued to get better in 2008 as the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team reached the title match of the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing before bowing to host and defending champion China in the gold‐medal match. Hulett owns and operates his own junior volleyball club named Adversity VBC, a club he founded in 1997. He also manages an eight court volleyball facility in a northern suburb of Chicago. Hulett takes on the role of administrator, director, manager, landlord and janitor for the club. Outside of those duties, he coaches the Adversity Elite 18‐and‐under junior boys’ team. Adversity is the perfect name for his club as it tells his life story in a nutshell. As a quadruple amputee survivor now confined to a wheelchair after complications from childhood diabetes, Hulett has endured so much in his own life and still continues to be a mentor, leader and example to all of overcoming adversity. In 1989, he endured his first amputation – his right arm be‐
low the elbow – after an infection ran through his body. Within the following seven years, three more amputations were per‐
formed leaving him without all four limbs due to complications from diabetes. Seven years after overcoming this adversity, he suffered a major heart attack. Through it all, it is said Hulett cried just once: when he realized that he would never play volleyball again. He is quoted as say‐
ing “I didn’t want to waste my energy on something I couldn’t control. I had a choice. I could hide or I could move on. I got over my situation pretty fast,” Hulett said regarding his medical setbacks. Hulett has coached collegiately at his alma mater Northwestern and at several high schools in the Chicago area. In 1998, he received a joint award from the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. With the honor, he became one of 10 finalists for the Sports Hero Award honoring unsung heroes who promote sporting programs in communities nationwide. Aside from his coaching, Hulett has served on the Great Lakes Region Board of Directors and is a Region IMPACT clinician. He has repre‐
sented the Great Lakes Region for junior boys’ volleyball at USA Vol‐
leyball meetings. Hulett was presented the Junior Volleyball Out‐
standing Clinician award in 1997. In 2001, USA Volleyball honored him with its George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball award. The Great Lakes Region is PROUD to call Mike Hulett one of our own. He joins the elite members of “Frier” recipients from the Great Lakes Region which is comprised of Dorothy C Boyce (’75), Mert Kennedy (‘77), Bertha Lucas (‘81), Lea Wagner (‘93), and Pete Dunn (‘04). Those We Love Don’t Go Away
They Walk Beside Us Every Day
Unseen, Unheard, But Always Near
Still Loved, Still Missed
And Very Dear...
Rhyen and Nikki Staley, Directors of Team Pineapple VBC welcomed the arrival of their fist child Emily Grace on June 21st. Emily weighed in at 8lbs and 22 inches. It was a busy weekend for the Staley family with Emily arriving just prior to the wedding of Rhyen’s youngest sister Anne. Looks like Ryhen now has a new setter in the family to start training in a few years. We wish the Staley family joy and happiness as they enjoy their new daughter. Andrea and Shane Davis, Directors of D1 Volleyball Club became par‐
ents for the first time on July 11th when they welcomed their daugh‐
ter Sydney into their family. An‐
drea looked like she could be on the cover of “Vogue” after the delivery and Shane looked 10 years younger with a permanent smile plastered on his face. The family was seen out and about within days of coming home enjoying the new love of their lives. In a few years we expect to see D1 adding a girls portion to their volleyball club. Congratulations Shane and Andrea!
LOCAL HERO!
Joe Boshold, a Great Lakes Re‐
gion Official is considered a HERO by many in the Schaum‐
burg High School area. While attending his daughter’s softball game on April 17th, Rich Keller, a volunteer assistant coach for Schaumburg collapsed near third base towards the end of the game. Joe ran over to Keller on the ground and saw he was unresponsive and be‐
gan administering CPR. “I did what I was trained to do,” Boshold said, adding he learned CPR at work when he joined the company’s health and safety team. “I never thought I’d have to use it, but I’m glad I knew it.” As Boshold pumped Keller’s chest, a school athletic trainer, ran to get an AED machine from a softball field about 60 paces away. When she ran back, Keller still had no pulse. After a few tries with the defibrillator, the machine revived him just as Schaumburg paramedics were arriving to take over. Joe waves off the notion he is a hero and is just glad he could use his training when it was needed. He encourages others to take local CPR and AED classes just in case they find them‐
selves in a similar situation that could save a life. As one life begins all too often a cherished life comes to an end. We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to several of our Great Lakes families as they continue to grieve the loss of their loved ones. Mike Hulett, Director or Adversity VBC and Region Board of Directors member grieves the passing of his mother, Norma after she succumbed to a long battle with cancer in late April. Norma helped Mike with the registration side of his club for many years and was a wonderful woman who was loved by all that met her. Her presence was felt at the USAV Boyce Ban‐
quet the night Mike was honored as the recipient of the “Frier Award”. You just knew she was smiling down on him with pride. Dave Harlan, one of our Great Lakes Region Officials said a tearful goodbye to his mother Kathryn Harlan after battling a long illness in early May. Kyle Muldoon, an Adversity VBC coach suffered a devastating loss when his father Michael Muldoon, age 63 suffered a mas‐
sive heart attack while driving home on July 14th hitting sev‐
eral trees as he went off the road. By the time paramedics arrived it was too late to save him. Kyle had just gotten mar‐
ried the week before and was on his honeymoon when he received the horrifying news. Adam Beck, coach for D1 Volleyball Club and Tournament Di‐
rector for Palos Courts lost the love of his life Cyndi on August 12th. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago which she overcame. Approximately, 30 months ago cancer was found in her spine that spread to her thyroid and eventu‐
ally to the brain. She fought hard and was actually able to take a short vacation with her mom, and son Ryan in early July. Adam was by her side throughout her entire illness and will honor her life and memory as he raises their son Ryan. Condolences go out to ALL our members
who have recently lost a love one.
We hope you will find peace and
serenity in the loving memories that
can never be taken away from you.
The Officials Corner
Our Officials Division worked hard this season rating and evaluation new and seasoned officials. Approximately 20 new Provi‐
sional Officials have joined our ranks bringing the total of certified officials close to topping the 200 mark. Upgrades were done advancing officials to the rank of Regional Officials and much time was spent on working with our candidates going for their Junior National Ratings this season. More work is being done to train our Junior Clubs as R2’s and scorekeepers. This is a free service offered by the Region. Clubs may contact Sean Doheny at [email protected] to take advantage of this service. This whole program will only suc‐
ceed with the help of the Junior Clubs take advantage of this. This year the National Office is working diligently in the creation and updating of current online training tools for officials as well as players. All modules can be found at http://www.volleyballreftraining.com/. This is a great resource for both officials as well as clubs to get training on line at their own leisure and not to be tied to a specific time schedule. For the first time we will be able to offer an ONLINE Rules clinic that will be mandatory for ALL Officials to view prior to taking their test. There will also be an opportunity to come to a site to take the test in person if they so choose. Information on this will be forthcoming. New Candidates will still be required to attend a rules interpretation in person. Those interested in information on becoming a USAV certified official should contact Mary Malpede our Official’s Chair for further information and instructions on the certifi‐
cation process at [email protected] We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and recognize our Great Lakes Officials who earned their National or Junior National Ratings as referees or scorekeepers. We are proud of their accomplishments. Junior National Officials

Joseph Gustafson was scheduled as the R1 on the Boy’s 17 Open Bronze medal match, but Ultimate 17 Gold was a participant in it (club he coaches for) so he was taken off that match but was then assigned on the lines for the 17 Open Gold Medal match!! Dan Riggs‐ was the R1 on the Boy’s 18 Open final as well as the 16 club Flight 3 championship. Felix Madera—was assigned the 15 Club Bronze Medal match Devonie McLarty– was asked to sing the National Anthem three times while working the Boys event in Dallas. Paul Fowler‐ worked the Boy's 16 Club Final as R1 as well as worked the lines for the 16 Club, 17 Open, & 18 Club Bronze matches. Great Lakes is ON FACEBOOK!
The Great Lakes Region is in the process of getting on board with the social networking craze and starting up a Facebook page. The site listing is GreatLakesRegionVolleyball and it says: "Official Facebook Page of the Great Lakes Region ‐ member of USA Volleyball”. A Twitter page is also in the works @ GLRVolleyball We hope to have photo contests and highlights of individual teams and clubs from our adult and junior programs throughout the season. Colleen Madera is the coordinator of the site for the Region and can be reached at [email protected]. If you have any questions or ideas for postings. Recognition of Achievement
Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Service Award Recipients This award is named in honor of Robert L. Lindsay, the eighth president of USA Volleyball from 1981‐1984. The award is a ve‐
hicle to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to volleyball at the local, regional, national and/or inter‐
national levels though USAV and its Regions. Great Lakes is proud to announce our 2012 award recipients for this prestigious Devonie McLarty began her volleyball career as a junior player in the Great Lakes Region and earned her Pro‐
visional officials certification when she was 17 years old. Her officiating skills advanced her quickly to a Re‐
gional rating. In 2005 Devonie earned her Junior National rating and in 2007 she advanced to a National Cer‐
tification. Devonie has received numerous top level assignments at both the Open Championships as well as at the Boy’s and Girls National Championships. Devonie has worked tirelessly for the Region in many capaci‐
ties including serving as our Officials Rating Coordinator in 2011. She recently was elected by her peers at the USAV National Convention to the position of USAV Officials' Assembly Chair making her the youngest National Official to ever hold that position. She is also a PAVO National Referee , as well as a USAV National Scorer. She officiates all levels of men's and women's collegiate volleyball and continues to be active on the Great Lakes Region Rating Team. Shane and Andrea Davis are the owners/directors of D1 Volleyball Club, a junior boys volley‐
ball program based in the Chicago suburbs of Skokie and Palos Heights. Shane and Andrea have been running the club since 2007, and in this short time period the club has experienced tremendous success and growth. Club accolades include a 5th place finish in the 18 & Under Open division at Nationals in 2010, dozens of players continuing on to play collegiate volley‐
ball at schools including (but not limited to) Loyola Chicago, Lewis, Carthage, U of San Diego, and more, and an expansion in membership from 40 players in 2007 to over 110 in 2012. Shane is a native of Denver, Iowa, who went on to become an All‐American setter at Loyola University Chicago where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Marketing. He brings a wealth of insight to D1 VBC through his experience as a former player and current Head Men's Volleyball Coach at Loyola. Shane is entering his 10th season as Head Coach of this NCAA Division I program, and in this time frame, he has been named MIVA Coach of the Year on three occasions, has coached six All‐American recipients, and has racked up over 150 career wins. Andrea was born and raised in the Chicago suburb of Palos Hills, and graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor's de‐
gree in Public Communication. She spent her first years out of college doing marketing and sales for the Wrigley Rooftops before taking on the Director role at D1 Volleyball Club. In 2008, Andrea published a 75‐page resource for young male volley‐
ball athletes titled "The Prep Guide to Playing Collegiate Men's Volleyball," and in 2012 she earned her Master's degree in School Counseling from DePaul after completing a year‐long internship counseling high school students in the northwest Chi‐
cago suburbs. Together, Shane and Andrea aim to provide the highest‐quality of leadership to the members of their organization and to the volleyball community as a whole. Lastly, on July 11th, 2012, they welcomed their first child to the world, Sydney Jane, and they look forward to sharing their love of volleyball with her for years to come. Pam Campbell was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, and earned a degree while at Lewis Univer‐
sity in Athletic Training and Communications with a minor in P.E. In 1999 Pam set a vision in motion with a small group of children and formed Attack VBC. This group of kids was just the beginning of an incredible journey that would help Pam realize her dreams. Soon after graduation and a few sports related jobs, she realized no obstacle would be too tough or would be able to slow her down in her efforts to achieve ultimate success. From her initial coaching positions grade schools, and later as the boys head varsity coach at Richards HS in Oak Lawn, she always displayed good work ethics. She knew the importance of learning every aspect of the job so that everything was done with precision and profes‐
sionalism. Pam has dedicated herself to the sport she loves and currently holds a position of Division Representative on the Great Lakes Region Board of Directors. Pam currently coaches and directs her teams and coaches with the same passion she had 25 years ago. She strives to encour‐
age and mentor our young athletes to live out their dreams!! She believes we all need to be able to: “Wake Up Every Day Loving What We Do”!!!! Recognition of Achievement

Pat Meinert , the director of Rockford VBA was named as the 2012 recipient of USAV’s Outstanding Junior Coach Award this past May. Pat started her volleyball career at Rock Valley Community College in 1972 and then at Northern Illinois University for a year. Upon graduation, she began coaching at her old High School and continued there for 20 years. In 1985 she became involved the Rockford Volleyball Association and has coached and/or directed the club through the present. Pat trained under John Kessel to become an Impact instructor for the Region and continues to be one of the Regions leading clinicians. After teaching for 24 years, Pat became the facilities director for The Open Net Sports Center for 3 years. Pat has been working for the District for the past 10 years running all the youth and adult volleyball programs, indoor and sand volleyball, as well as running the Rockford Volleyball Association club. Her favorite age to coach is 12’s, 13’s, or 14’s, however she also love working with the “Itty Bitty Bumpers” which is the Dis‐
trict’s 5‐8 year old volleyball program. Several years ago she developed her coaching philosophy into a sort of “Volleyball Creed”. These are a few points mentioned in her creed: 




I know it is important to keep winning in perspective and that the Athlete comes first. I believe kids play better when they have fun. I believe a team is stronger when each team member has a contributing role on the team. I believe in TEACHING teamwork – it doesn’t always come naturally. I believe parents are an important support component of any team, yet they must understand their role is to uncondition‐
ally support their child, his/her team, and the coach.  I believe the administration is an important support component of any sport program. I expect them to trust me to do my job and always act in the best interest of the players and the program. esults

USA Volleyball is the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of volleyball in the United States. They run and manage the USA National Men's and Women's Volleyball Teams, the USA Olympic Teams, and also USA Youth and Junior National Teams for each gender. The Youth and Junior National Teams, along with a number of tiered training programs, fall under the High Per‐
formance (HP) Department. The HP Program at USA Volleyball is the "pipeline" for young volleyball athletes who aspire to reach the elite level of their sport and who dream to one day represent the USA on the National Men's or Women's Volleyball Team. HP provides many team and camp opportunities for young volleyball athletes in three designated age groups for each gender. Entry into all HP teams and camps is based upon selection at one of many USA HP Tryouts during the winter and spring of each year. The Great Lakes Region concluded the 2nd year of our Windy City Power League with some great matches filled with excitement and suspense. 314 teams competed during the season in most single age divisions. Following seeding date weekends the
teams in each age division were divided up into divisions of sixteen teams (Red, White, Blue and Purple) and competed in a
round robin league with each one crowning their own division Champion. Going into the last date of competition many of the
divisions were totally up for grabs and came down to the last match played to determine their division champion. We are looking
forward to the start of our 3rd season league and hope that the clubs, players, coaches, and parents continue to enjoy the experience.
Congratulations to the following teams and clubs who earned medals in each of the divisions.

The Great Lakes Region instituted an Windy City Power League All Region and All Academic Selection Project in 2012. Even though it was late in the season the Region felt strongly that individual players should receive the recognition that they de‐
serve. Coaches and Club Directors were asked to nominate players from their own teams as well as players from the opposing teams for the Windy City Power League All Region Team. Clubs and coaches were also asked to send us the names of any High School age player who participated that was eligible for recognition as an All Academic Team recipient. Student athletes had to have earned a 3.5 GPA out of a 4.0 scale or 4.5 out of a 5.0 scale. Based upon the feedback we received from the clubs, recipients were notified and received certificates of achievement from the Region. A photo shoot was then scheduled on July 14th for all recipients and those able to attend where highlighted in group photos in their age division as well as a full group shot. Photos can be viewed by going to http://www.anthonygrahamphotos.com/ . We want to personally thank Tony Gra‐
ham, a Great Lakes Region adult player as well as a coach at Uno VBC for setting up and producing these awesome photos. We also want to thank Linda Snyder and the Energy VBC for offering their beautiful facility to us as the backdrop for our pho‐
tos. Without their help and commitment this endeavor could not have taken place! Kudo’s also go to Creig Federico and An‐
gelo Iasillo for brainstorming this project. Their vision came to life! We will continue these two programs starting at the beginning of the league play in 2013 and hope to be able to give the rec‐
ognition to all of our well deserving athletes and scholars. We were amazed at the number of athletes that have managed to competitively compete in athletics but also maintain such high standards of academic success. Windy City Power League ALL Region Recipients
