Mutual of Omaha’s Wild
Kingdom celebrates 50 years
(NAPSI)—Mutual of Omaha’s
Wild Kingdom premiered on NBC
on Jan. 6, 1963. And television
hasn’t been the same since.
“Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom brought the world’s most
exotic places and creatures right
into Americans’ living rooms,”
said Jim Fowler, who joined the
legendary Marlin Perkins as the
show’s co-host. “Over the years
it also became a Sunday evening
tradition for families all across the
country. And we pioneered a new
television genre—the reality show.
“Of course, at the time we just
wanted to create the most entertaining and educational show we
could,” Fowler said.
Mission accomplished. From
its premiere 50 years ago, Mutual
of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom has
entertained, educated and inspired
generations of Americans.
Wild Kingdom received 41 major awards including four Emmys.
It was the first television program
to receive the National PTA’s
endorsement for recommended
family viewing.
“I can’t tell you how many
people tell me that they pursued
a career in zoology, wildlife conservation or a related field because
of Wild Kingdom,” Fowler said.
“Beyond the awards and the ratings, the positive impact the show
has had is truly astounding.”
NBC was home to Mutual of
Omaha’s Wild Kingdom until
1970, when it was syndicated on
the Mutual of Omaha National
Syndication Network. More than
200 local television stations joined
the network, enabling the show to
reach the largest audience in its
history.
The original Mutual of Omaha’s
Wild Kingdom remained in production until 1986, with Peter Gros
joining Fowler as the show’s cohost upon Marlin Perkins’ retirement. It continued in syndication
through the mid-1990s.
The Wild Kingdom story didn’t
end there, however. From 2002
through 2011, the Animal Planet
network was home to a new series
of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom shows. These programs built
on the Wild Kingdom heritage
by offering viewers compelling
wildlife stories in one-hour documentary format.
It’s been quite a ride for the last
half century. And the story’s not
done yet.
“We’re excited to celebrate a
half century of adventure, and
we’ve got lots of exciting things
planned to kick off Wild Kingdom’s next 50 years,” Fowler said.
“Wild Kingdom has always been
ahead of its time, and we’re moving forward on initiatives that will
thrill our current fans and engage
new generations.”
Wildkingdom.com is the hub of
all that is new and exciting in the
Wild Kingdom, Fowler said. From
there, viewers can link to a new
Wild Kingdom YouTube channel
that features a complete library of
original Wild Kingdom shows as
well as new videos.

Suicidios en las Fuerzas Armadas alcanzan la cifra récord de 349 en 2012

Fuerzas Armadas estadouni­
denses alcanzaron el pasado año
la cifra récord de 349, frente a los
301 del año anterior, con lo que
superan los muertos en combate
en Afganistán, informaron fuentes militares.
“Estamos profundamente preocupados por los suicidios en las
Fuerzas Armadas, que es uno de
los problemas más urgentes a los
que nos enfrentamos”, indicó a
Efe Cynthia Smith, una portavoz
del Departamento de Defensa.
Según los datos recopilados
por el Pentágono, el pasado año
se registró la mayor cifra de suicidios desde que comenzaron a
contabilizarlos en 2001 y superó
los 310 muertos en combate en
Afganistán, según las cifras de
la organización icasualties.org.
La cifra también sobrepasó las
proyecciones del Pentágono que
había calculado que en 2012 se
producirían unos 325 suicidios.
El Ejército es la rama de las
Fuerzas Armadas que más víctimas registró, con 182, mientras
que el Cuerpo de Infantería de
Marina, que durante dos años la
tasa ha ido en descenso, el pasado
año subió en un 50 por ciento
hasta los 48.
La fuerza Aérea registró 59
suicidios, un 16 por ciento más
que el año anterior y la Marina
tuvo 60, lo que supuso un incremento del 15 por ciento.
La prevención del suicidio se
ha convertido en una prioridad
del Pentágono, como ha manifestado el propio secretario de
Defensa, Leon Panetta, aunque es
un problema que persiste.
El Pentágono asegura que está
comprometido en encontrar soluciones para ayudar a los militares
que lo necesiten ya que “nuestro
más valioso recurso en este departamento es nuestra gente”,
aseguró Smith.
“Estamos comprometidos en
cuidar a nuestra gente, y eso
incluye hacer cualquier cosa posible para prevenir los suicidios”,
agregó la portavoz.
Smith señaló que hay distintos
factores que pueden contribuir al
suicidio, como problemas financieros, sociales, emocionales,
físicos, mentales y del entorno.
En este sentido, señaló que los
oficiales deben promover activamente un clima que fomente
la cohesión y anime a los individuos a buscar ayuda cuando lo
necesiten, ya que “buscar ayuda
es una señal de fortaleza”.

college course on Ethics in Local
Government for all current and
future employees with our history
of former City Council members
going to jail, city inspectors
caught taking bribes, Alamodome
personnel getting free rooms and
free food from vendors, topped
off by a former assistant city manager being on a contract selection
committee while knowing that he
would be hired by one of the applicant bidders.

Syphilis cases up in Bexar County

The figures for the last half
of 2011 paint a bleak picture
for Bexar County and the City
of San Antonio in the rates of
syphilis and the heartbreaking
number of babies born with
congenital rates of syphilis and
officials with the Metro Health
District are making an effort to
get in front of the problem.
Thomas Schlenker, M.D.,
head of Metro Health, isn’t hesitant about meeting the challenge
head on, but is quick to admit it
won’t be easy. He said a plan
made up of several components
is being put into practice. He
explained that reorganization is
underway at the district’s Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)
clinics that will specifically
focus on pregnant women.
“One thing we’ll be doing is
that every pregnant woman who
walks through the door for any
reason, we’re going monitor her
throughout her pregnancy,” Dr.
Schlenker said. “Even if we diagnose and treat her for a single
STD at one point, we will make
sure that if she gets another one
during the rest of her pregnancy
she gets diagnosed and treated
so the baby is born healthy.”
Last year the figures were
dramatic.
During 2012, 18 cases of congenital syphilis were reported
to Metro Health, a total far
surpassing any recent year and
double that of the Bexar County
annual rate for 2005-2011, five
times the national average. Five
of these 18 babies were born
dead.
He said what they’re trying to
do is change medical practice
locally so that every single pregnant woman in Bexar County
gets tested for syphilis three time
during their pregnancy. This is a
CDC recommendation, but is not
yet taking place in San Antonio.
“To understand how syphilis is
being transmitted and to design
interventions that will prevent
the spread of going forward,
many of the women who transmit syphilis to their babies are
getting prenatal care and being
seen by doctors and nurse practitioners and others in clinical settings and they are being missed
for diagnosis and treatment of
syphilis,” Dr. Schlenker added.
He added that every single
pregnant woman should be
tested at her first prenatal visit,
again in the third trimester and
again at birth. With that Schlenker thinks that perhaps as many
as 50 percent of all cases can be
prevented.
“Syphilis is curable with a
shot of penicillin in adults. It’s
easily diagnosable with a blood
test. It’s easily curable with a
shot of penicillin, but if that
doesn’t happen before the baby
is born and baby is infected in

and that is not treatable,” he said.

La primera juez hispana en Supremo
EE.UU. echa la vista atrás en sus memorias
(EFE)- Sonia Sotomayor, la
primera juez hispana en el Tribunal Supremo de EE.UU., recuerda
en un nuevo libro de memorias
las dificultades que marcaron su
infancia y su carrera profesional y
que le ayudaron a forjar “fortalezas insospechadas”.
El libro, titulado “My Beloved
World” (“Mi mundo adorado”)
y que está disponible a partir del
martes en las librerías del país,
revive la sensación de Sotomayor
cuando entró a la Universidad de
Princeton “por una puerta especial”, la de una beca destinada a
equilibrar el número de estudiantes pertenecientes a minorías.
“Me sentía como un extraterres­
tre aterrizando en un universo
diferente”, dijo en una entrevista
que publicó The New York Times.
La juez de 58 años, que hizo historia al ser nombrada en 2009 por
el presidente Barack Obama como
una de los nueve magistrados del
Supremo, escribe en sus memorias
que en sus años en Princeton, y
más tarde en Yale, estuvo rodeada
de “buitres preparados para lanzarse” sobre ella “cuando cayera”.
Pero ella siempre defendió el
programa, que abrió puertas a
hispanos y negros a un tipo de
educación con el que no se atre­
vían a soñar.
“No tenía por qué disculparme
porque esa beca de miras abiertas
que tenían Princeton y Yale me
hubiera abierto puertas. Ese era su
objetivo: crear las condiciones por
las que los estudiantes en situación
de desventaja pudieran llegar al
punto de partida de una carrera que
muchos desconocían que estuviera
organizada”, relató.
Las memorias de Sotomayor,
publicadas tanto en inglés como en
español, apenas incluyen referen­
cias a su trabajo en el Supremo,
ya que concluyen con su llegada
al tribunal federal del Distrito de
Manhattan (Nueva York), en 1992.
En su lugar, la juez dedica casi
la mitad del libro a describir su
infancia en el seno de una familia puertorriqueña en el barrio
neoyor­quino del Bronx.
Sotomayor tenía ocho años
cuan­do le diagnosticaron diabetes
y tuvo que aprender a ponerse sola
las inyecciones de insulina, porque
a su padre, que murió de alcoholis­
mo un año después, le temblaban
demasiado las manos.
La magistrada define su infancia como “un estado de constante
tensión salpicado de discordia
explosiva a causa del alcoholismo
de mi padre y la correspondiente
reacción de mi madre, ya fuera
la lucha familiar o la huida emocional”.
“Podemos sacar provecho de la
adversidad, aunque no lo vemos
hasta que lo ponemos a prueba.
Ya sea una enfermedad grave,
penurias económicas o la simple
barrera de unos padres con dominio limitado del inglés, las dificultades pueden forjar fortalezas
insospechadas”, escribe.
Sotomayor recuerda cómo empezó a leer libros en inglés por
su cuenta, cómo aprendió a “escuchar y observar detenidamente”
a los adultos y cuál era el ancla
que la mantenía a flote: su abuela.
La juez también recoge sus fracasos, como su divorcio en 1983
y la decepción que sintió cuando,
después de unas prácticas de verano en una firma de abogados, fue
la única becaria que no recibió un
contrato a tiempo completo.
“Si escribo un libro solo sobre
el éxito que he tenido, la gente
no va a aprender nada positivo
sobre él. Si soy honesta, tengo
que reconocer mis propios errores,
tanto en mi matrimonio como en
mi entorno de trabajo”, señaló
Sotomayor al Times.

Chelsea Clinton y Eva Longoria encabezarán Día Nacional de Servicio
(EFE)- Chelsea Clinton, hija
del expresidente Bill Clinton, y la
actriz hispana Eva Longoria presidirán conjuntamente el próximo
sábado el “Día Nacional de Servicio” en EE.UU., que tendrá lugar
en vísperas de la investidura del
mandatario Barack Obama para
su segundo mandato.
El Comité de Investidura Presidencial (PIC, por su sigla en
inglés) informó en un comunicado de que Clinton ha sido
seleccionada como “presidenta
honoraria” y Longoria como
copresidenta de este evento en el
que los estadouni­denses prestan
servicio voluntario en centenares
de actos en todo el país.
“El Día Nacional de Servicio” tradicionalmente se realiza,
además, en vísperas del festivo
promulgado durante la presidencia de Bill Clinton en honor al
fallecido activista afroamericano
de los derechos civiles, Martin
Luther King Jr.
“No hay nada más adecuado para
celebrar la investidura presidencial
que un día de servicio (voluntario).
Unirnos como país para fortalecer
a nuestras comunidades siempre ha
sido parte del espíritu estadouni­
dense”, dijo Chelsea Clinton en el
comunicado emitido por el PIC.
“Estoy orgullosa de ser parte de
un esfuerzo de servicio nacional
en honor al servicio y legado del
reverendo doctor Martin Luther
King Jr. y construir un futuro más
brillante para todos”, enfatizó.
Además de Chelsea Clinton y
Longoria, la lista de oradores y
artistas que participarán en el “Día

downtown to the Cameo Theater
in early 2012.Since the move he’s
had a successful run on productions of “Hairspray,” “Buddy,”
and most recently CATS.
“The Cameo Theatre is a huge
blessing. It opened its doors to my
theatre family and costumers. We
have had 4 Hit Shows in a row,”
stated Pennington. “Hairspray
was our first and the Buddy Holly
Story musical is making a return
in February. I have to say I could
not be happier or more thankful. God has really blessed our
company.”
Originally created for the stage
by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS
is one of the longest running musicals in history. In addition to
CATS, Webber had also written
and composed musicals that have
ranged from “The Phantom of the
Opera” and “The Sound of Music” to “Jesus Christ Superstar”
and “Evita.”
Webber adapted the musical
from one of T.S. Elliot’s children’s books titled Old Possum’s
Book of Practical Cats.

Facebook adds new feature, ‘Graph Search’

Countless people speculated
as to what Facebook’s “big announcement” was on Tuesday.
Would it be a smart phone? A
tablet?
It is none of the above.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Tuesday the company
will add a search feature called
Graph Search. It is designed to
help users sort through content
within the social network and its
content feeds. It will be “privacy
aware,” displaying only search
for content on Facebook that is
shared with each user, he said.
Graph Search is the social network’s response to its massive
base of one billion users and 240
million photos.
Facebook members can use
the structured search tool to
resurface old memories, find
people in their network, and
uncover connections. The service incorporates various filters
such as place type, liked by,
and visited by friends to make
locating things faster. You can
refine search queries with more
advance filters to get better answers.
In essence, Graph Search will
be a bigger, more glorified search
bar at the top of each page.
One example demonstrated
at Tuesday’s press conference
was a very specific search for
“Friends of my friends who are
single male San Francisco, Calif.” That refined search returned
a select group of people who fit
the criteria. Apart from personal
use cases, Graph Search can be
used for dating and recruiting
purposes, which could make the
product a potential challenger to
LinkedIn and various dating sites
that incorporate social network
profiles.
Graph Search is not the new
Google. Facebook is just giving their search bar a fancy new
name with the ability to make
finding out things about your
friends much easier.
All the powers of Graph Search
are not yet clear nor is the impact
it will make. Only two weeks
away from Facebook’s latest
earnings report the announcement could be a ploy to soften
the blow of a poor report.

Encuentra el tiempo para ser líder

Cualquiera puede ser líder,
todo depende de las decisiones
que uno toma y cómo apro­
vechar las oportunidades que se
nos presentan, además no es tan
difícil ni consume tanto tiempo
como la gente cree.
Por ejemplo, hace poco asistí a
la reunión anual del instituto de
liderazgo ¡Adelante! Leadership
Institute en San Antonio. Allí
no solo aprendí a desarrollar
mis habilidades profesionales
y de liderazgo sino que además
conocí a un representante de
MillerCoors, la compañía que
estableció y que patrocina el
programa ¡Adelante! U.S. Education Leadership Fund. Esa
reunión dio lugar a una pasantía
en las oficinas de MillerCoors.
También descubrí tres consejos que podrán ayudar a que
la gente desarrolle las aptitudes
esenciales para liderar a los
demás.
1. Ser maestro en “multita­
reas”. Uno nunca está demasiado ocupado para hacer algo que

people as winter progresses.
“The colder it gets, the more
people huddle together. The longer you spend in close proximity
the more we will pass things back
and forth,” Ratner said.
Now is the time to get your flu
shot. Popular to contrary belief,
the flu vaccine doesn’t provide
immediate immunity, nor does
it give you the flu. It could take
a couple, or even a few weeks
to become immune to the flu. By
that time, it’s too late. Get it now,
before flu season reaches its peak.
“It’s better late than never to
get vaccinated.” Dr. Evan Ratner, M.D. and husband of Linda
Ratner said.
Even if you aren’t vaccinated,
there are a few things you can do
keep from spreading the virus:
• Cover your mouth when you
cough and sneeze
• Frequently was your hands
with soap and water
• Wipe down any electronic
devices or frequently used items
• If you are sick, stay at home
for at least 24 hours after the fever
has passed
Most people claim that they
wash their hands frequently, but
it doesn’t necessarily mean that
they are doing it properly. Impact
Urgent care is offering a visual
presentation called “Bug Busters”
to teach how to properly wash
hands. They are willing to go to
your company or school, free of
charge.
The presentation consists of a
black light and invisible “germ
lotion”. The lotion is spread on the
hands, and then washed off. After
washing the hands, a black light is
put to show the germs remaining
on the hands.
After a demonstration on how to
properly wash hands, the lotion is
applied again, another hand wash,
and behold–germless hands under
the black light!
“Sometimes even adults don’t
wash their hands! I have been in a
couple of restrooms where adults
walk out without washing! We’ve
gone to a couple of places to do
presentations, and it was a real
eye opener for some. We need to
spread awareness and help prevent
the flu.”

Manu out at
least 10 days

In the new age of social media it
didn’t take long for us to find out
how many days Spurs guard Manu
Ginobili will miss.
“Just finished with the MRI.
Grade 1 strained left hamstring.
10/14 days out. Will be back
shortly. Thanks 4 ur support,”
Manu tweeted just before 11 a.m.
yesterday.
The Spurs organization then
followed up an hour later with an
official statement, “Manu Ginobili
underwent an MRI this morning
that revealed a Grade 1 left hamstring strain.”
It also said Ginobili is expected
to miss 10-to-14 days. He was
injured on Sunday right before
halftime against the Minnesota
Timberwolves.
Now that it is official, it’s really not a regular season without
a Manu injury. On the positive
sign of things he will have plenty
of time to recover before the playoffs. History has proven hamstring
injuries can linger and need ample
time to heal.
The Spurs are coasting along
with the third-best record in the
Western Conference, 29-11 and
have been getting solid bench play.
Danny Green weighed in with
a Pop-esque response when asked
about the mindset of the team,
“we’ve had injuries before in the
past not just this year but last as
well so our mindset is going to be
the same. Our bench guys have to
come in, no let downs and continue
to play good basketball.”
Moments later he expressed his
real feelings about the situation,
“He’s been playing very well for
us, which sucks that he got hurt.”
“Sucks,” about sums it up right.
It is not catastrophic, season-ending or any other overreaction word
you could plug in, it just sucks. The
Spurs will be fine.
Manu averages 12.9 points in
24.4 minutes this season. Gary
Neal and Stephen Jackson pick up
extra minutes. Although it would
be interesting to see rookie Nando
de Colo get some extra playing
time. Could he be a mini-Manu?
If Manu comes back in two
weeks at most he will have missed
seven, maybe eight games in all
if he sits against the Charlotte
Bobcats on Jan. 30, which is a
high probability considering the
Bobcats are about 20 games under
.500.
The Spurs play Memphis tonight
at 7:30 p.m. in the AT&T Center.

Lance Armstrong comes clean about dirty past

Lance Armstrong proves that
if it is too good to be true, then it
probably is.
Conflicting reports began to
surface after his interview with
Oprah Winfrey taped in Austin
on Monday, whether or not Armstrong admitted he used performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).
Winfrey said Armstrong confessed to her that he used performance-enhancing drugs during
his string of seven Tour de France
victories but did “not come clean
in the manner” she expected according to a report from Reuters.
The interview lasted more than
two and a half hours, Winfrey
tweeted Monday.
The interview will air Thursday
and Friday on OWN, the Oprah
Winfrey Network. It’s a twopart no-holds-barred interview
according to the website.
Armstrong will address the alleged doping scandal, years of accusations of cheating and charges
of lying about the use of PEDs
throughout his cycling career.
If you don’t know Armstrong’s
story, in short, it was the ultimate
feel-good story of a cancer survi-
vor. Not even Mark Twain could
have scripted it better.
He not only beat cancer, he destroyed it and came back to be the
most prolific cyclist in the history
of the sport. Post-cancer Lance
won a record seven consecutive
Tour de France’s between 1999
and 2005. The Tour de France is
the Super Bowl of cycling.
During that time his success
was the catalyst for the Livestrong
Foundation. Armstrong built the
foundation on a backbone of
lies. The yellow wristband he
wore signified his victory over
cancer were a symbol of hope
for all those affected by cancer.
Millions of the iconic wristbands
were sold.
Armstrong has muddied his and
the Livestrong name forever. He
lied about his PED use, threatened
law suits and accused his accusers
of libel. Shame is a hard thing to
face but Armstrong made it worse
on himself.
In a text to the AP on Saturday, Armstrong said, ‘’I told
her (Winfrey) to go wherever
she wants and I’ll answer the
questions directly, honestly and
candidly. That’s all I can say.’’
The facts are he cheated and
lied, but we should have known
his story was too good to be true.

Ginóbili en recuperación y Spurs se enfrenta a Grizzlies y Warriors

El guardia argentino Manu
Ginóbili, en partido dominical
jugado en el AT&T Center, contra los visitantes Timberwolves
de Minnesota se lanzó con todo
en sus 12:29 minutos de acción
esparcidos durante el primero y
segundo cuarto.
Ginóbili ejecutó cinco asistencias con un rebote defensivo y
enceste de 12 puntos.
Para él, el último minuto del
segundo periodo fue fructífero
porque ayudó a sus compañeros
a salir adelante manteniendo una
ventaja de 55 a 50 puntos. Más,
nunca imaginó que su intensidad
de juego sobre la duela lo iba a
conducir a un percance en su estructura física al caer en el área
chica con el balón en su mano
izquierda y recargado, levemente,
en la cancha a media palma de su
mano derecha.
La jugada fue parte de la acción
por la posesión del esférico.
Pasaron unos cuantos segundos. Cuando en el área chica
local Ginóbili, burlando al rival, se descontroló en su paso,
enviando asistencia al capitán
Duncan quien lamentablemente
vio a Manu caer de espalda sobre
la duela.
Aun con dolor, el argentino
hizo el intento por recuperar su
postura y ponerse de pie, pero
solicitó ayuda para salir de la cancha, la cual abandonó apoyándose
en su pierna derecha.
La afición lo despidió con
gran ovación deseándole pronta
recuperación.
Al final Spurs se anotaron su
29º triunfo con marcador de 106
a 88, en partido que tuvo duración
de 2:01 horas, el cual fue presenciado por 18,144 espectadores.
Gregg Popovich resumió el
asunto: “El guardia Gary Neal,
reemplazando a Manu, pudo sacar
el equipo adelante, ya que logró
mantenerlo bajo su control y así
de tal forma logramos quedarnos
con la victoria ante los Timberwolves, que son un equipo ague­
rrido, prueba de ello fue que por
un buen momento se nos fueron
arriba en el marcador con nueve
puntos, por lo que les doy crédito
por haber jugado un cerrado encuentro desde principio a fin”.
Recuperación
A través de un boletín de
prensa, los Spurs anunciaron
oficialmente que el escolta suplente Manu Ginóbili estará
en recupera­ción de lesión en el
tendón de la corva en su pierna
izquierda. La rehabilitación le
llevará entre 10 a 14 días.
Stephen Jackson, alero y guardia de los Spurs, ofreció palabras
de aliento para Ginóbili, deseándole pronta recuperación.
“Sin la participación de Manu
estaremos un poco faltos de ofensiva. Él es uno de los compañeros
que gusta darnos apoyo sobre la
cancha. Todo es parte del juego,
nuestro entrenador Popovich nos
manda a la cancha a darlo todo, él
exige rendimiento en la ofensiva
y defensiva. Por mi parte seguiré
haciendo lo que se me indique,
después de mi recuperación del
dedo quebrado he tenido la suerte
que mis compañeros me han dado
buenas asistencias y los encestes
triples solos se han dado. Ahora
que nos visite Memphis Warriors
vamos por la revancha ya que nos
ganaron en su cueva en tiempo
extra. Seguiré progresando en
mi estilo de juego, me gusta celebrar triunfos y ayudar al equipo
en todo lo que pueda y este a mi
alcance”, comentó Jackson.
El guardia estelar Tony Parker
también tuvo palabras de aliento
para Manu con quien él y el capitán Tim Duncan forman el “Gran
Trío de los Spurs”, por sus tres
campeonatos ganados, con excep-
ción de “Timmy”, que ostenta 4
sortijas de la NBA.
“Esperamos que Manu pronto
se recupere y retorne a la acción.
Nos queda por delante jugar interesantes partidos. Reconozco
que nos hemos quedado cortos
en nuestro sistema de juego. Los
últimos partidos se han jugado
con lentitud y se ha batallado para
salir adelante, será porque se han
jugado casi continuamente, pero
ello no es excusa alguna. Contra
Grizzlies jugamos tiempo extra,
se perdió por cerrado marcador,
pero ahora que este miércoles nos
visiten tenemos el compromiso
de darle la voltereta al marcador”, añadió Parker.
Los Spurs no se duermen en sus
laureles. Al sufrir baja de Manu,
mandaron llamar de su sucursal,
Toros de Austin, al guardia Cory
Joseph, graduado de University
of Texas (UT), quien se encuentra asignado con los astados,
donde tiene promedio de juego
de 20.7 puntos por partido en 14
partidos jugados, seguido por 5.9
en rebotes y 4.6 en asistencias.

Obama presentará hoy un plan para el
control de armas, según la Casa Blanca
(EFE)- El presidente de
EE.UU., Barack Obama, presentará hoy, un “paquete” de medidas específicas para endurecer
el control de armas, incluyendo
la prohibición de armas de asalto,
con base en las recomendaciones
presentadas por el vicepresidente
Joseph Biden, informó la Casa
Blanca.
“El presidente y el vicepresidente tendrán un evento acá en
la Casa Blanca para desvelar un
paquete de propuestas concretas
para reducir la violencia por las
armas”, dijo durante su acostumbrada rueda de prensa diaria
el portavoz de la Casa Blanca,
Jay Carney.
El objetivo, añadió, es prevenir “futuras tragedias” como la
ocurrida el pasado 14 de diciembre en una escuela primaria en
Newtown (Connecticut), donde
20 niños y seis adultos fueron
masacrados.
El evento, que será a partir
de las 16.45 GMT en la Casa
Blanca, contará con la participación de niños de todo el país
y sus padres, que enviaron cartas
a Obama a raíz de la masacre de
Connecticut sobre la violencia
derivada por las armas y la seguridad en los colegios, precisó
Carney.
El portavoz no quiso adelantar
el contenido del plan de propuestas que presentará Obama, pero
varios medios de comunicación,
citando a algunos de los congresistas con los que se reunió
Biden ayer a puerta cerrada, han
indicado que el paquete incluye
hasta 19 medidas que no requie­
ren el sello del Congreso.
Sin embargo, Carney dijo
que el mandatario quiere una
“respues­ta integral” al problema
de las armas en el país y que exis­
ten “acciones legislativas específicas” que continuará pidiendo
del Congreso, incluyendo “la
prohibición de armas de asalto”
y de cargadores largos.
También “un esfuerzo para ce­
rrar los grandes resquicios en el
sistema de revisión de antecedentes” para la compra de armas que
existe en el país, señaló Carney.
Preguntado sobre el temor de
los defensores de la Segunda Enmienda de la Constitución acerca
de que Obama quiera “quitarles”
las armas de forma unilateral,
Carney subrayó que el mandatario cree que la enmienda cons­
titucional “garantiza el derecho
de un individuo a portar armas”.
“Obama cree y sabe que la
mayoría de los propietarios de armas son altamente responsables,
que compran armas legalmente
y las usan de forma segura”, y
que la mayoría de ellos apoyan
“medidas de sentido común” para
impedir el acceso a las armas de
personas que no deberían tenerlo,
continuó Carney.
Esas medidas, agregó, incluyen
corregir los resquicios existentes
en el sistema de revisión de antecedentes para la compraventa
de armas.

En la actualidad, las personas
con condenas criminales o historial de problemas psiquiátricos
no tienen autorización para la
compra y uso de armas en este
país.
Carney reconoció que hay
límites en las leyes actuales sobre
lo que se puede hacer para controlar las armas y que el Congreso
es el que tiene el poder de tomar
medidas adicionales.
Obama anunciará una serie
de medidas, muchas de las cua­
les necesitarán el respaldo del
Congreso, según el portavoz
presidencial.
Una ley federal promulgada
por el entonces presidente Bill
Clinton en 1994 prohibía la venta
de armas de asalto, pero caducó
en 2004 y desde entonces una
amplia coalición de activistas ha
pedido su renovación.
Desde el Congreso, la senadora
demócrata por California Diane
Feinstein ha dicho que presentará
en la 113 sesión legislativa una
medida para restablecer esa ley
federal.
A petición de Obama y tras la
masacre de Connecticut, Biden
lideró un Grupo de Trabajo que
a lo largo de varias semanas sostuvo reuniones con representan­
tes de todos los sectores de la
sociedad civil para formular
medidas en contra de la violencia
de las armas.

Comienzan las celebraciones de MLK en San Antonio

El próximo lunes 21 de enero
se espera que más de 200,000 personas asistan y participen en el e
26º aniversario de la marcha conmemorativa Martin Luther King
Jr. (MLK)
El evento es organizado por la
Comisión de Martin Luther King
Jr. en San Antonio, parte de la
Ciudad.
El aniversario será celebrado este
año con una serie de eventos que
ya dieron comienzo este domingo
pasado, pero que continuarán
llevándose a cabo hasta el día de la
marcha, lunes 21 de enero.
Dentro de lo más destacado de
la conmemoración de una semana
completa se encuentra una lectura
en Trinity University, en el auditorio Laurie el jueves 17 de enero.
La lectura dará comienzo a las 7:30
p.m., y será ofrecida por el doctor
Boyce Watkins, quien con su experiencia en finanzas y como autor
de libros, presentará como en años
pasados su lectura conmemorativa
“Five Ways to Bring Dr. King’s
Dream Back to Life” (Cinco maneras de regresar a la vida el sueño del
Dr. King). El evento será gratuito
y no tiene que hacer reservación.
El sábado 19 de enero se reali­
zará un desayuno con el Reveren­do
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., hijo del
recordado Martin Luther King Jr.
El desayuno será de 9 a.m. a 11 a.m.
en el hotel Hilton del aeropuerto
de San Antonio, ubicado en el 611
NW Loop 410.
El desayuno tendrá la participación especial del Obispo David
M. Copeland, del hijo del líder
Martin Luther King Jr., y de otros

La caminata es de 2.75 millas y
comienza en la Academia Martin
Luther King, Jr., pasando por toda
la calle Martin Luther King Dr., y
finalizando en el parque Sullivan
Park, 1101 Iowa, en donde habrá
comida, bebidas, música en vivo y
otras atracciones. Todo este gran
evento será en el este de la ciudad.
Esta marcha es una de las más
grandes de Estados Unidos y
gracias al apoyo de instituciones
locales y a nivel nacional se ha
convertido en lo que es hasta ahora.
La Comisión de Martin Luther
King Jr. en San Antonio se estableció el 3 de abril de 1986 bajo
el liderazgo del ex alcalde Henry
Cisneros, dando inicio a su primera
marcha el 19 de enero de 1987.
La Comisión es una organización
voluntaria sin fines de lucro.
