How to setup Microsoft Outlook Express

How to setup Microsoft Outlook Express
(1)
Open Outlook express and select Accounts from the tools menu
If this is the first time Outlook express has been opened the new account wizard might have
automatically started. Skip to number 3 if it has.
(2)
From the internet accounts window on the right click on the add button and select the Mail
option
If you wish to see the list of existing email account select the mail tab first
(3)
The first page of the Internet connection wizard asks for a display name. This is the name
most email programs will display in the ‘from’ field and can be any name you want. It does not
necessarily have to match your email username. Most people put their first and last names in here or
a nickname. Click the next button once you have entered a display name.
If this is a business email account I would recommend using just your first name and not a
nickname

The second page of the Internet connection wizard asks for your email address. Click the
next button once you have entered your email address.
(5)
The next page of the Internet connection wizard asks for server information. The (My
incoming mail server is a) option should be set to POP3.
Enter ‘mail.swiftnet.co.nz’ in the incoming and outgoing server boxes without the quotes.
Click the next button once you have entered the above information.

(6)
The next page of the Internet connection wizard asks for your account name and password.
Your email account name is the same as your full email address.
(e.g. [email protected])
(7)
Once you have entered your username and password and click on the next button the last
page of the wizard will display telling you that you have successfully set up your email account, but
we still actually have a couple of advanced options we need to set. Click on the finish button to
close the wizard.
(8)
On the internet accounts window select the mail tab from the list and locate the mail account
you have just set up. If you have only set up one email account in Outlook express then this will be
on only mail account on the list.

buy default Outlook express names this account after the server name you enter for your POP3
server. If more than one email account uses this server it will append a number after the server
name in brackets - e.g. mail.swiftnet.co.nz(1)
Once you have clicked on the email account to highlight it click on the properties button on the
right to open the properties window.
(9)
The mail account name will by default use the POP3 server name and will append a number
in brackets if this name is already in use. If you wish you could change this name to whatever you
want as long as that name is not used by another email account set up in this copy of Outlook
express. (e.g. My Swiftnet E-mail account or John Doe Account)
The organization and reply e-mail fields are optional but I would fill in at least your full email
address in the Reply E-mail field. If this is a business email address you should put your business
name in the Organization field.
(10) Select the servers tab from the top of the properties window. At the bottom of the window
tab in the outgoing mail server options is the 'My server requires authentication' tick box. By default
this is un-ticked, but for the Swiftnet email servers it must be ticked.

(11) Clicking on the settings button to the right of the 'My server requires authentication option
will open the outgoing mail server settings window. This should be set to the 'Use same settings as
my incoming mail server' by default. This means it will use the same username and password as the
incoming server. Click the OK button to close this window if set correctly.
(12) Select the advanced tab from the properties window.
Click in the box containing the port number beside the words 'Outgoing mail (SMTP)' and change
26
The default port number of 25 is now being blocked by a lot of ISP’s to prevent Trojan horse
programs on infected computers from being able to send out spam and so we are running a second
SMTP server on port 26 to allow you access your email account easily if your computer is
temporarily linked to the internet via another ISP, such as if you take your laptop to work etc.
The POP3 port number should be left at its default of 110
To complete the settings click the OK button to close the mail accounts properties window. Then
click the close button on the Internet accounts window.
Congratulations you have set up Outlook express to check your email account
