Waterborne adhesive formulators experience increased pressure to tailor their products faster & at
lower cost in order to meet their customers very specific end-use requirements. This productivity gain
cannot be achieved without reviewing development process & thinking smartly at future steps... To
this extend, computerized formulation is the way to go!
Adjust faster adhesion, Tg, wet tack, setting speed… by knowing what & by how much you should
change your water-based adhesive formulation BEFORE trying.
David Horwat will share his hands-on experience using particle distribution, Tg & molecular weight…
to timely reach desired performance.
Why you should attend:
1. Make better decisions (right the first time) for your WB adhesive developments with a
smarter use of physical variables
2. Set up smaller series of experiments to get the needed results (predict Tg, work at constant
Tg or viscosity...)
3. Implement straight away the good practices discussed - the only thing you need is an
Excel spreadsheet!
Who is it for?
Intermediate to skilled WB adhesive formulators
Especially those involved in packaging/ laminating applications.
Outline
The following sections will be covered during this session:
1.
The productivity advantages of predicting formulation results
2.
Key Structure Property Relationships for polymer raw materials
3.
Modeling the Tg of a formulation
4.
Experimental design using predicted Tg results
5.
Key Structure property relations for wet rheology
6.
Historical Models
7.

8.
The 3 key variables:
• Aqueous Viscosity
• Critical Packing Factor
• Mean Particle Size
9.
Plasticizer response as a key parameter
10. Other properties as linked to Viscosity
Presented by Dr. Eldridge M Mount
At the end
of the training
there will be a
Q&A Session where you
can pose questions to
David Horwat.
A transcript of all the questions
& answers will be made
available after the event.
David Horwart is a highly experienced - nearly 40 years - Adhesives Technologist.
After getting his BS and Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, David Horwart
was employed at Henkel, Air Products and Wacker Polymers for which he
successfully carried out numerous projects including on :



Water borne packaging adhesives and wood working adhesives;
Water borne equivalents to solvent borne contact cements ;
High solids water borne VAE/ isocyanate adhesive system
…
He recently developed his own structure property relationships and a mathematical model of
waterborne adhesive formulations. He is proficient in experimental design and has a strong
fundamental understanding of formulation variables.
David Horwart authored the Air Products “Adhesives Manual” and owns numerous patents directly
related to the adhesives industry.
