Dec. 6 was the feast of St. Nicholas of Bari. Interestingly,
he is the patron of Bakers and Pawnbrokers. According to
tradition, next to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Nicholas is the
saint most frequently depicted in art by Christian artists. He is
also invoked as a patron of children in particular. This is
because of the story where a citizen of Patra lost all of his
money and had to support three daughters who could not find
husbands because of their poverty. The man was going to give
them over to prostitution but this soon came to the ears of St.
Nicholas who took a bag of gold and, under cover of darkness
threw it in at the open window of the man’s house. The gold
covered the eldest daughter’s dowry and she was soon duly
married. At intervals Nicholas did the same for the second and
third. The tradition of charitable giving continues to this day in
the form of gift giving at Christmas. We thank the Lord for the
gift of St. Nicholas, his inspiring life story, and the greatest gift
of all, Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Special thanks are also due
to those parishioners who so generously contributed to the
organ fund. 345 families pledged $141,465. To date, $89,
600.00 has been paid. The average pledge was $413.64. What
is so extraordinary about this is the group effort. We can look
forward to wonderful music on a new organ by Mid March!

This weekend happens to be Gaudete Sunday, from the
Latin word meaning “rejoice.” How appropriate that this
Sunday corresponds with the feast of the miracle of the Tilma
of Our Lady of Guadalupe. As Christianity is the greatest story
ever told, the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a miracle
that continues to evolve even to this day. In obedience to the
directives of Our Lady who appeared to St. Juan Diego and the
request of the Bishop, on Dec. 12, 1531 Juan Diego gathered
Castillian roses that had miraculously appeared on the hillside.
Our Lady carefully arranged them in his Tilma and when he
opened it before the bishop the image appeared as it is to this
day. Nasa has performed research on the material and found
the colors to be of no known human origin. The fact that the
fabric has not deteriorated can still not be explained by
science. Take a moment today to reflect on the words she first
spoke to a startled man in his 50’s (Juan Diego), and imagine
her speaking them to you: “Listen, put it into your heart, my
youngest and dearest son, that the thing that frightens you, the
thing that afflicts you, is nothing: do not let it disturb you; do
not fear this sickness, nor any other sickness, nor any sharp
and hurtful thing. Am I not here, I, who am your Mother? Are
you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source
of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the
crossing of my arms? Do you need something more? Let
nothing else worry you, disturb you; do not let your uncle’s
illness pressure you with grief, because he will not die of it
now. You may be certain that he is already well.”

Third Sunday of Advent
Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
My dear sisters and brothers, Saint James councils patience in
today’s second reading. As we begin our celebration today on
this joyful Third Sunday of Advent, let us take a break from
the hustle and bustle of the season to reflect on what it means
to wait for the coming of the Lord. Can we be patient? Let us
pray today to allow the kingdom to unfold “in God’s good
time.”

DID YOU KNOW….
Week #8— I’m almost two months old now. I’m not an
“embryo” anymore. Now doctors call
me a “fetus” “Fetus” is a Latin word
that means “little one.” I am little. I
may be less than an inch and a half
long! But my stomach is already
