This weekend St. Patrick Church begins the
celebration of First Holy Communion for 48 of
our young people. A special word of thanks go
out to Mrs. Dani Annino, Director of Faith
Formation, and to all the catechists who have played such an
integral role in their education. It was Pope St. Pius X who
allowed children to participate fully in the Eucharist in the
early 1900’s. Since that time there have been countless young
people who, through devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, have
lived lives of great holiness. Among those especially, the
church remembers St. Maria Goretti, St. Dominic Savio, St.
John Berchmanns, Bl. Francisco and Jacinta Marto as saints
and blessed who gave heroic witness to Christ strengthened by
their faith in the Eucharist. It is my sincere hope and prayer
that all those who receive in the next several weeks, will
realize that they are receiving God’s greatest gift: “the
heavenly banquet.” Sometimes Catholics are put on the
defensive from people not properly informed about the biblical
nature of the Mass. Consider the following: The Opening
blessing ( Mt 28; 19), the Apostolic greeting (2 Cor 13:14), the
Amen 1 Chr 16:36b, The Lord be with you (Lk 1:28; 2 Thes
3:16; Ruth 2:4), The Lord, have mercy (MT 17:15, 20:31; Ps
123:3), The Glory to God (Lk 2:14, plus many texts in
revelation), the Alleluia (Rev 19:1-6; Tobit 13:18), Lift up
your hearts (Lam 3:41), the Holy, Holy, Holy (Rev 4:8; Is 6:3;
Mk 11:9-10; Ps 118:26, The Eucharistic prayer ( 1 Cor 11:2326; Mt 26:26-28; Mk 14:22-24; Lk 22:17-20), The great Amen
(rev 5:14), The Lord’s Prayer (Mt 6: 9-13), the Peace be with
you (Jn 14: 27; 20:19), The Lamb of God (Jn 1: 29; Rev 5:6
and elsewhere), This is the Lamb of God (Rev 19:9), Lord, I
am not worthy (Mt 8:8), Go in Peace (Lk 7:50; 2 Chr 35:3),
Thanks be to God (2 Cor 9:15). Noted theologian Scott Hahn
adds the following in his book Reasons to Believe: “The early
Christians, such as Ignatius of Antioch and Tertullian,
recognized that the Church established its altars on earth in
order to imitate heaven’s altar (see Rev 8:3). The Church’s
priests wore vestments in order to imitate the robed presbyters
who worship in heaven (see Rev 4:4). And even in the age of
electric lights, the Church continues to use candles in order to
evoke the lamp stands depicted in the Bible’s most heavenly
visions (Rev 1:12). The same is true of the use of incense in
worship (see Rev 5:8) and chalices (Rev 16) as vessels.
Congregational kneeling, practiced in the Western Church, is
another Gospel practice. In the New Testament, kneeling is the
prayer posture of mothers, rulers, lepers, and Jesus Himself
(Mt 8:2, 9:18, 15:25; Lk 22;41). With a pedigree like that, its
hard to argue against the posture.” What the Catholic church
celebrates every Sunday is a fulfillment of an explicit
command of Jesus Christ, an important command issued at a
pivotal moment in His ministry, a command recorded in the
Gospel and in one of St. Paul’s letters. Here it is in its earliest
recorded form: “For I received from the Lord what I delivered
to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when He was betrayed
took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and
said, “This is My Body which is for you. Do this is
Remembrance of Me.” In the same way also the cup, after
supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do
this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” (1 Cor
11: 23-25).Prayers and blessings on our young people as they
receive this great gift!

Fr. Matthew Linn, SJ has focused on integrating physical,
emotional, and spiritual healing. He is a member of the
Association of Christian Therapists and has advanced graduate
degrees in sociology, anthropology, spirituality, & theology.
Since 1970 he has taught courses and given retreats on healing
in every state and in over 60 countries from Alaska to
Australia. Ordained in 1973 he currently lives in a Jesuit
community in Minneapolis where he trains spiritual directors
at Sacred Ground and serves on the editorial board of
Presence: An International Journal of Spiritual direction.

Columbus Scholarships
The St. Patrick Guild and the Knights of Columbus will be
presenting two $1,000 scholarship to a senior who is a member
of St. Patrick Parish and is looking to further his or her
education at a one-year, two-year, or four-year school or
college. In order to qualify for the scholarship, you MUST be a
member of St. Patrick Church, and a graduating senior high
school student. Applications are available in guidance offices
at East Hampton High School, Xavier High School and Mercy
High School. Applications are also available in the Parish
Office. The completed applications and attached transcripts of
all high school grades to date may be mailed to Karen
Adametz, St. Patrick Church, 47 West High St., P.O. Box 177,
East Hampton, CT 06424 or dropped off at the Parish Office
by Friday, May 20, 2011.

ACTS Retreat for Women
2011 Annual Catholic Appeal – “Do
This in Memory of Me”
“Do This in Memory of Me.” When Christ spoke these words
at the Last Supper he was asking his disciples not to look back,
but to look forward. In recalling the past, doing what he
commanded “in memory of Me,” Christ was inviting them to
anticipate the future. The recalling becomes an expectation of
eternal life. Looking forward, not back.
St. Patrick Church, and St. Andrew’s Church, Colchester are
Co-Sponsoring a Women’s ACTS Retreat, June 2-5, 2011, at
the newly renovate “Immaculata Retreat House” located in
Willimantic, CT. The goals of the retreat are to strengthen your
faith and its application in your daily life, to renew yourself
spiritually, and to build community through lasting
friendships. The cost of the retreat is $200.00. Financial
difficulties should not prevent anyone from attending. A
limited amount of “need-based” financial assistance is
