“He is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all
are alive.” (LK 20:27-38) The last lines of the Gospel this
weekend communicate a very important point: God is a God of
the living. In the month of November, a month dedicated to
remembrance of the Holy Souls, it is important for us to
reconsider this very important truth: those who are in Christ
Jesus by virtue of Baptism are not dead-they are alive! This is
the core teaching on the Communion of Saints. The Catholic
teaching on the communion of saints rests on four pillars: 1)
The Church is Christ’s Body; 2) Christ has only one Body, not
one on earth and one in heaven; 3) Christians are not separated
from each other by death; 4) Christians must love and serve
each other.
Let’s focus on the fact that death does not separate
Christians. Because of Christ’s victory over death, a victory in
which all Christians share, mere physical death can’t separate
Christians from Christ or from each other. This is why St. Paul
exults: “What will separate us from the love of Christ?......I am
convinced that neither death, nor life……will be able to
separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our
Lord.” (Rom 8:35-39) Hear that? Death does not separate us
from our loved ones. This does not state that grief is not real. It
is very real and it must be faced, but death does not have the
final answer- St. Paul again: “Death, where is your victory,
death where is your sting?”
Consider the following words from Patrick Madrid, author
of Any Friend of God’s Is a Friend of Mine: “Since death has
no power to sever the bond of Christian unity, the relationship
between Christians on earth and those in heaven remains
intact. Therefore, when we read biblical passages about how
members of the Body of Christ need each other or are
obligated to assist and pray for one another, Catholics
recognize that they apply to Christians in heaven, too. The
Protestant animus against the idea that saints in heaven can or
should pray for us stems from an ‘out of sight, out of mind’
mentality: ‘Since I no longer can see and speak to departed
Christians, they must not no longer matter to me.’ This myopic
position is not only not scriptural, it actually clashes with
verses that Protestants know by heart. For example, St. Paul
chides Christians who think they don’t need other Christians:
God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as He
intended. If they were all one part, where would the body be?
But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot
say to the hand, ‘I do not need you.’ Nor again the head say to
the feet, ‘I do not need you.’….God has so constructed the
body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it, so that
there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may
have the same concern for one another. If one part suffers, all
the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts
share its joy.’”
This November, let us remember that as we pray the Our
Father and recite the words “on earth as it is in heaven” we say
those words with all our dearly departed loved ones who have
“finished the race” and are at home with the Lord. Death can
wound us deeply but it does not have the final answer because
of Jesus Christ. Our loved ones are much closer to us than we
can imagine: cling to this fact because “I (we, you) can do all
things through Christ who strengthens me.” Saints of God,
pray for us!

Robida will be retiring. We thank John for all he has done for
St. Patrick Church and wish him well.

LIFE NIGHT ON BULLYING: A very powerful night
planned for teens (11/7) – you don’t want to miss this
Sunday’s life night on gossip and bullying, a serious and
timely topic. Cyber bullying will be discussed as well as other
forms of bullying and we will have witnesses come forward to
talk about how they were bullied, understand why people bully
and what we can and should do to stand up for the victims.
RENTSCHLER FIELD CLEAN UP: We are looking for
adults and teens to help us with this fundraiser, 11/28 from
8:00am-noon at Rentschler field. Sign-ups posted on the life
teen bulletin board. We need a minimum of 30 people and a
maximum of 35. Please let us know if you can help!
STEUBENVILLE EAST 2011 DATE ANNOUNCED: July
22-24th @ the University of Rhode Island. We have many
opportunities for you to earn all of the $ you need to attend this
retreat and join 4,000 other teens!! Come to life teen on
Sunday nights to hear more. Also, help us decide if we should
go to NorthBay summer camp in August again with Righteous
B!! Speaking of retreat fundraisers…see below
YANKEE CANDLE FUNDRAISER: October 22 through
November 8th – Delivery, before Christmas. Life Teen is
having a Yankee Candle fundraiser to raise money for retreats.

Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
Today we find ourselves confronted with the idea of
resurrection and eternal life. In Jesus’ answer to the
Sadducees, we get a hint that risen life is beyond our
comprehension. If we believe in the “resurrection of the body
and life everlasting,” do we show it in our lives by respecting
our bodies and others’, by graciously welcoming all to our
tables, by our passionate care for and about our neighbors and
strangers? Let us pray today for the grace to live out our belief
in the Resurrection.

Middlesex Hospice Needs Volunteers. At Middlesex
Hospice and Palliative Care, volunteers are an integral part of
our interdisciplinary team, reaching out to patients and
families as they cope with the challenges of terminal illness.
Volunteers can choose to work in homecare, on the Weiss
Hospice Unit or in bereavement support after completing 40
hours of classes and a 12 hour mentorship. Training runs late
January to April each year, and is held primarily on Saturdays
and evenings. To begin our fall application process, please
contact Barbara Standke, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, at

earliest convenience. You may also go to the Middlesex
Hospital website http://middlesexhospital.org and fill out a
volunteer application online, including the last page
specifically for Hospice volunteers.
2010 Seton Scholarship Dinner. The first annual Seton
Scholarship Dinner, honoring the Most Reverend Michael R.
Cote, Bishop of Norwich, will be held on Saturday, December
4, 2010, at the Mystic Marine Life Aquarium from 6:0010:00pm. The Scholarship Dinner has been created to benefit
students attending Catholic Schools within the Diocese of
Norwich. The proceeds of this dinner will be designated solely
for tuition assistance. Tickets are $150 per person. The tax
deductable portion of the ticket is $100. For details, contact

Week #3 — at 17 days, I have my own
blood cells, which may be a different
blood type than my Mom’s. At 18 days, I
have a new muscle that occasionally
pulses—this will be my heart. At 19 days,
my eyes are starting to develop. At 20
days, the basic parts of my entire nervous system have
been laid sown. By the end of this week, my heart will be
beating.
