Summer Socials are Back!
Year of Faith:
July 2013
The summer sun may be warming up, but we have a plan to keep your kitchen cool! Our weekly POTLUCK BBQs will return on Monday, July 15 at 6 p.m. with an evening of upbeat music by our very own Youth Ministry Band! The fun will continue for the next two Mondays, July 22 and 29. Virtues Required for the Journey of Faith Meditation Faith enables us to recognize Christ, whose love impels us to assist him whenever he “becomes our neighbor” along the journey of life. Supported by faith, we are filled with hope as we recommit ourselves to bear witness in the world, awaiting “new heavens and a new earth” in which righteousness dwells (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1) (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 14). In summertime, according to the Gershwin classic, the living’s supposed to be easy. But not the journey of faith! Luke’s July Gospels present Jesus’ challenging expectations for faithful disciples: Travel light; bless others with peace and healing; let your lives proclaim, even before your words do, that God’s kingdom is at hand. Don’t ask, “Who is my neighbor?” Instead, make yourself a “good Samaritan,” a neighbor to anyone in need. Serve others selflessly like Martha, but, like Mary, balance loving service of Christ in others with quiet listening at the Master’s feet. With childlike simplicity, make the Lord’s Prayer your own. Persevere in asking, seeking, knocking at the door, the door opened wide in this Year of Faith to bestow our heavenly Father’s first and best gift, the Holy Spirit. Mission Begin each day by committing myself to the mission Christ has entrusted to me; be a neighbor to those in need; serve others lovingly; spend time in quiet prayer with Jesus; pray for the young people gathering with the Holy Father in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for World Youth Day, July 23–28. Please bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share, and St. Norbert’s will provide the burgers, hot dogs, and beverages. Your helping hands are welcome to assist with set‐up after the 8:30 Mass, as well as to help with clean‐up afterwards. If you would like to join our core crew, please contact Janet Llewellyn at [email protected] or (714) 998‐3104. July Christian Service Food Collection
No Taco Sunday in July The Taco Sunday crew is taking a vacation this month, but we still need your support for our monthly food collection. This month we are collecting small boxes of raisins and individual packets of nuts. Please place your donations in the bin in the vestibule of the church on July 20/21, or in the Ministry Center anytime during the month. Thank you for your continued assistance in helping us feed those who are hungry. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Stay Informed! We gather for prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 7:30 p.m. _______________________________________________________________________ Wondering Why
The Book of Isaiah is a fascinating scriptural document. It contains more references to Messianic prophecies than any other book of the Hebrew Scriptures. It also covers a greater period of time than any other single book of the Bible. early 7th centuries B.C. King Ahab had not been faithful to the Covenant and even sacrificed his eldest son in a fiery pagan ritual. Isaiah of Jerusalem does not hesitate to point out his sins and challenge him to greater fidelity. Another of Ahab’s sons, Hezekiah, however, became a reformer king who did away with many of the pagan practices which had infiltrated Israel. He tried to bring the people back to obedience to God’s Covenant as expressed in the ancient law which God had given to Moses. The recorded hymns celebrating the birth and then the coronation of Hezekiah have messianic overtones and later could be understood as a prefiguring of Jesus. In the 7th century B.C. the province of Judah, which included Jerusalem, was conquered by the Babylonians under King Nebuchadnezzar and most of the residents of Jerusalem were taken to Babylon, leaving behind only those who were sick, poor, or had no useful skills. This was a very difficult time for the Judahites who felt abandoned by their God who had promised David that a descendent of his would reign on the throne forever. It was during this time of exile, 583‐535 B.C., that the second section of Isaiah was written. Isaiah of Jerusalem who composed the first 39 chapters had long been deceased, but this prophet continued to write in the style of the first, so their work was eventually grouped together. The name of this second prophet is unknown, but he addressed the fears of the people in exile, reassuring them that God had not abandoned them but that this exile to a foreign land was a just punishment for their infidelity to the Covenant and that, in time, God would restore them to the Promised Land. It is in the texts of second Isaiah that we also begin to encounter texts that speak of only One God. Until that time the Chosen People had believed that their God was one of many gods, but this one had a particular interest in them and a relationship to them. In second Isaiah we begin to hear texts such as “I am your Lord, there is no other.” (Isaiah 40:28, 44:6, 45:5 and others) The passage we hear today at Mass is from the third prophet in the Isaiah tradition. His name is also unknown, but he is writing at the very end of the exilic period when Babylon has been conquered by King Cyrus II of Persia, and King Cyrus has issued a royal decree that allowed captives to return to their homelands. This portion of the Book of Isaiah (Chapters 55‐66) is filled with thanksgiving and rejoicing at the goodness of God who has saved his people from the enemy and returned them to their home. Look again at the reading for today, Isaiah 66:10‐14, and notice all the images joy and descriptions of God’s nurturing love for his people, and remember that even when it seems that everything is lost, God can still enter into the chaos and bring about a new beginning. Although it appears to be one long text (i.e., 66 chapters), it is actually an accumulation of writings by three different individuals which have been linked together because of their common themes and style. The first 39 chapters of the Book of Isaiah reflect the prophecies of Isaiah of Jerusalem who lived during the reigns of King Ahab and his son King Hezekiah in the late 8th and LA IGLESIA CATÓLICA DE SAN NORBERTO | WWW.STNORBERTCHURCH.ORG

In today's world, can Christianity penetrate and thrive in the many areas of secular life? Can it transform the world in a way that is in keeping with the times? The Cursillo Movement believes this is possible. Cursillo proposes no new type of spirituality, but simply a method through which one's spirituality may be developed, lived and shared in any area of human life.
The next Cursillo Weekends will be August 1 through 4 for men, and August 6 through 11 for women.
