The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate more on
what we want than on what God wants for us and from us. It is
good to know that when we are confused by our stewardship
responsibilities we can call on the Holy Spirit to show us the
way.

The Gallup organization is the world’s leading
research organization. A recent study indicated
that in work environments there is a general
sort of malaise. This is because so often people
are valued for what they produce rather than who they are. In
short, they are known more for their weaknesses than for their
strengths or gifts. What they found, through studies, is that
organizations that focus on strengths rather than weaknesses
had a much greater overall sense of well being. Think now of
how this can apply to a local parish. Rick Warren, founder of
Saddleback Church in California and author of The Purpose
Driven Life, speaks about different types of churches here in
the United States. There are, for example, finance driven
churches, there are social activity driven churches, there are
churches preaching the gospel of sin management, there are
churches that are closed in on themselves and perfectly content
maintaining the status quo. What about Saint Patrick in East
Hampton? What drives us?
In this light I propose that much as there was a dramatic
shift in workplace happiness when the focus shifted from
weaknesses to strengths, so too, an individual parish can
change when the focus is on the gifts of the Spirit. We are all
conscious of sin and the havoc it has wreaked in our lives. G.
K. Chesterton said so beautifully “ We are all in the same boat
and we are seasick.” What we may not be as conscious of,
however, is how the Lord wants all of us to discover our
unique gifts and talents and use them to serve the Body of
Christ. Listen to St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians: “
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit,
there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there
are different workings but the same God who produces all of
them in everyone. To each individual the manifestations of the
Spirit is given for some benefit.” Are we listening? Do we
realize that the God who made the universe and who limited
Himself to become a little child and a little piece of bread has
that personal love for, and desire to use us as His instruments?
This is the fulfillment of everything we promised at baptism. It
is our vocation. A vocation to holiness and it is possible. When
the Lord is speaking in these terms He is speaking
individually, not collectively. He is speaking to You.
This Pentecost Sunday thank God for the Gift of God, the
Holy Spirit, The Holy Spirit empowers and gifts each of us to
live transformed lives. Instead of focusing on the gospel of sin
management, we focus on the gospel of God’s Amazing
Grace. Instead of seeing the speck in our brother’s or sister’s
eye we realize how we have been given unique gifts and
talents to share with one another in service. Like the sound of a
beautiful symphony with many different parts, we all have a
role to play in “making a joyful noise to the Lord.”

CUP AND SIGN OF PEACE
Bishop Cote has indicated that he will restore the Cup and the
Sign of Peace for the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of
Christ beginning June 5, 2010 if another flu outbreak does not
occur. Precautions that were initiated last fall should continue.
If anyone is interested in becoming a
Eucharistic Minister or Lector,
please call the Parish Office at 267-6644.
On June 5/6 members of the East Hampton Ambulance and
parishioners of St. Patrick Church will be at the exits of the
Church after all Masses. They will be there to answer any
questions about the volunteer organization and becoming an
EMT. Each year with the increase of emergency calls, the need
for trained medical volunteers also increases. Please take a
flyer and consider joining their ranks.
2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal
“The Lord is my light…” (Psalm 27:1)
To date, our Parish has pledged $42,841.00 toward our
$57,700.00 goal. A total of 199 parishioners have responded.
To those who have, thus far, made their gift to the campaign,
we thank you for your generosity but also for helping us to
meet our Parish’s share of our responsibility to support the
many ministries, services and programs that benefit our
parishes, schools, and other diocesan institutions. If you have
not yet made your pledge, please add your gift, whatever the
amount, in solidarity with those who have already given by
returning your pledge envelope at your earliest convenience.
The ABA is an annual opportunity to practice stewardship
and share our gifts, with those less fortunate. We are not an
isolated church; we are not an isolated faith community. We
are part of a greater Church. Our parish and our diocese are
partners in faith. Please open your hearts to the needs of our
greater faith community and make a generous pledge to the
2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal. Thank you.

Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
Today we conclude our fifty-day celebration of Easter at the
invitation of our gracious God through the power of the Holy
Spirit. More that ninety days ago we began our annual spiritual
pilgrimage with ashes in the sign of the cross. Today we
rejoice in the presence of the Holy Spirit among us, bringing
us abundant new life. Let us give thanks and praise to God for

ANNUAL TAG SALE
The Guild will sponsor their Annual Tag Sale on Friday June
4th, 5 pm to 8pm and Saturday, June 5th from 9 am to 1
pm at St. Patrick Parish Center. We will be needing nice items
for the sale and request your help. Also, if you have any
costume jewelry, please contact Jessie Sjoblad at 267-9193.
Once again we will be accepting tag sale items at the Parish
Center May 30th-June 3rd. As you are going through your
attics and garages please be on the look-out for items you no
longer need that may be good for our sale. Note: we do not
sell computer items, clothing, large appliances or books
with the exception of children’s books. If you have any
questions, please call Helen Boule at 267-4137. Thank you
very much for your continued support of the Guild events.
Sharing the Spirit
The Holy Spirit gives us every good gift. The Spirit gives
us faith. The Spirit enriches our lives with the grace of God.
The Spirit lies beneath the charisms we have—the particular
gifts that build up the Body of Christ, however we choose to
serve.
Perhaps the Spirit’s greatest gift is preparing us for eternal
life with Christ. Paul writes to the Romans, “If the Spirit of the
one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who
raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies
also, through his Spirit that dwells in you.” The same Spirit
who gave life to Christ will also give life to us. The Father,
whose Spirit dwelled in Jesus, sends the same Spirit into the
hearts of those who believe.
This Pentecost recalls the sending of the Holy Spirit upon
the apostles long ago, but it also celebrates the coming of the
Spirit into the church today. That Spirit enriches each of us in
many ways—through our faith, our charisms, and the promise
of eternal life.
This Pentecost, let us open our hearts to that Spirit. Let us
accept the work of the Spirit in others and release it within
ourselves. Let us live in the Spirit that we might die in the
Spirit. On that great day we will be joint heirs with Christ as
we sing praise to the Father, in the Spirit for ever. Written by

St. Peter’s Higganum 50th Jubilee Spring Concert. The New
England Chamber Choir and Orchestra, under the direction of

at St. Peter Church in Higganum. This concert is a part of the
year long 50th Jubilee celebration of St. Peter Church. Some

Wheelchairs wanted! If you have a manual wheelchair no
longer being used, Chariots of Hope, a non-profit volunteer
organization, is collecting them to provide one at no cost to
persons in need. Saturday, June5th is our twelfth annual 1000
Wheels Day, and chairs will be collected at all State Police
Barracks.

Anointing of the Sick
On June 13, 2010 during the 11:00am Mass, Father Nagle
will administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
“The Church believes and confesses that among the 7
sacraments there is one especially intended to strengthen those
who are being tried by illness.” (CC)
This sacrament is now called the Anointing of the Sick
because one need not be at the point of death to receive it. We
know from Sacred Scripture that Jesus healed those who were
sick and infirm. We need Him so that He can make us whole
again both physically and spiritually.
Please come to be renewed and strengthened by receiving
this holy sacrament. If you are able to attend, please call us at
267-6644 so that we can reserve a place for you in church. If
you are unable to attend please call us so that we can come to
you with the Oil of the Sick.
