STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate more
on what we want than on what God wants for us and from us.
It is good to know that when we are confused by our
stewardship responsibilities, we can call on the Holy Spirit to
show us the way.

This weekend is Pentecost
Sunday. We continue our celebration
of First Holy Communion and pray
for an outpouring of the Spirit on our
church. In his Jerusalem Catechesis,
St. Cyril of Jerusalem says: “The Spirit comes gently and
makes himself known by his fragrance. He is not felt as a
burden, for he is light, very light. Rays of light and
knowledge stream before him as he approaches. The
Spirit comes with the tenderness of a true friend and
protector to save, to heal, to teach, to counsel, to
strengthen, to console. The Spirit comes to enlighten the
mind first of the one who receives him, and then, through
him, the minds of others as well. As light strikes the eyes
of a man who comes out of darkness into the sunshine
and enables him to see clearly things he could not
discern before, so light floods the soul of the man
counted worthy of receiving the Holy Spirit and enables
him to see things beyond the range of human vision,
things hitherto undreamed of.”
I love these words. The Holy Spirit is the soul’s
best friend. Friends know one another from the inside
out. C.S. Lewis in his work The Four Loves says that
love of friendship is the most inclusive of the loves. With
spring blooming and the hummingbirds returning,
perhaps we can relate to the analogy of our soul being
like a garden. The Holy Spirit is the gardener who trims,
clips, plants, and waters. However, as St. Cyril says, the
trimming, clipping, planting and watering is “not felt as a
burden, for he is light.” Even though you and I may not
be aware, the Holy Spirit is constantly at work in our
soul “with the tenderness of a true friend and protector.”
Water. Living Water. This is the image that helps
me the most. In the words of Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa:
“Sometimes one will see, on a farm where an irrigation
channel follows the upper contour of a sloping field,
people hurrying to open up little furrows, little channels,
to lead the water little by little into every planted row and
to every little seedling. It is a happy kind of work,
especially in summertime. It is the kind of work that
makes people sing while they are doing it, and everyone
can take part in it, even the little children. It is an image
of what needs to be done in the vineyard of the Lord.
Trace out a little furrow to lead the water of the Word of
God, or faith or praise or consolation, to someone: the
water of the Spirit. We need not merely trace out these
furrows; we can become ourselves channels of the Spirit
to others.”
This weekend let the living water gently flow upon
us so that “we can become ourselves channels of the
Spirit to others.”

UPDATE on MASS INTENTION Policy
According to Diocesan policy, each parish may elect two
Masses per week that allow for "multiple" intentions. The
two Masses at St. Patrick designated to have more than one
intention are the Saturday vigil Mass at 5:00 and the Sunday
Mass at 10:30. It has been our custom to limit intentions to
only two; however, effective immediately, these two Masses
are now available for multiple intentions. By so doing, there
will be more opportunities available to select the date of your
choice. Therefore, when scheduling a date for a Mass intention, remember the 5:00 vigil and 10:30 Sunday Masses can
have "multiple" intentions.
FEAST OF PENTECOST
Lord, we simply had no idea just how wonderful you
were. We have praised you in the past, but until the
Day of Pentecost we had not seen your glory. We
have given you thanks, but as we celebrate Pentecost
we recognize our utter dependence. We have worshipped your name, but on this Pentecost Sunday we
stand overwhelmed by your power. Lord, how can we
not praise you for what you have shown us in the coming of the Holy Spirit? In him, you have revealed
something of your authority over all things, your joy in
your creation and your desire to fill us with your love
and power. Lord, we praise you for your greatness,
which cannot be confined or restricted in any way; for
the way you have been present and active in your
world from before the dawn of creation. We praise you
for all those who down the centuries have known your
truth, acknowledged your presence and been filled
with your power. We praise you that on this Day of
Pentecost your promise of the Holy Spirit is for us; that
as we are together in this place we can know what it
means to be filled with the grace of the Lord Jesus
Christ, love of God and the power and the presence of
the Spirit. May he empower us to live in you. Amen.
The Feast of Pentecost will be celebrated on Sunday, May 19
at 2:00pm at the Cathedral of St. Patrick Hall in Norwich.

ST. PATRICK TAG SALE
The Saint Patrick Guild will be holding
their annual tag sale on Friday, May 31 from
5-8 pm and Saturday, June 1 from 9 am to 1
pm in the Saint Patrick Church parish center in East Hampton. The guild promises an exciting array of items, as always.
If you are spring cleaning and wish to donate items for
the tag sale, the guild will begin collecting donations at the
parish center on Sunday, May 26 from 10-2 pm. They will
also collect Tuesday, May 28 and Wednesday, May 29,
from 9 am to 12 noon and 4 to 7pm and on Thursday, May
30 from 9 am to 12 noon only. Acceptable donations include housewares, linens, toys, small furniture, kitchen
equipment, etc. Please, no computer equipment, baby furniture, books (except children's books) or clothing.

YEAR OF FAITH, EUCHARISTIC
ADORATION & THE ORDINATION
TO PRIESTHOOD
In this Year of Faith, a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration will be
celebrated by Bishop Michael R. Cote, Bishop of Norwich on Friday,
May 24th at 7:00pm, in the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Norwich.
This Holy Hour will be celebrated on the eve of the Ordination to the
Priesthood of Deacon Brian Maxwell. Also, we will join with our
Holy Father, Pope Francis (and with dioceses around the world) in an
hour of Eucharistic Adoration in a profound communion with Christ
to intensify our faith in the Eucharist during the Year of Faith. All
are encouraged to participate in the Holy Hour and in Deacon Maxwell’s Ordination on Saturday, May 25th at 10:30am at our newly

WORD OF LIFE
Do you know what your BLOOD PRESSURE is?
Blessed John Paul II in his encyclical letter “The Gospel
of Life’ reminds us that ‘when the sense of God is lost,
there is also a tendency to lose the sense of man, of his
dignity and his life” (no.21). If we wish to change the
“culture of death” in our society we must restore God to
the center of our lives. The power of the Gospel is to
transform humanity from within and to make it new. Like
the yeast which leavens the bread, the Gospel is meant to
permeate all cultures and give them life from within so
that they may express the full truth about the human person and about human life.

ALL have blood pressure over 140/90!
Here is some good news about high blood pressure: Even if you
have many risk factors, there are steps you can take to prevent
high blood pressure:
-Keep your weight at a healthy level. You can accomplish this
by a combination of healthy eating and regular exercise.
-Eat a healthy diet. This includes eating only the amount of food
your body needs and choosing foods high in nutrients and low in
fat, sugar, and salt.
-Limit how much salt you eat. Most of the sodium you eat is in
the form of salt. It may be salt that you add at the table or salt
added to processed foods you consume.
-Limit how much alcohol you drink.
-Don't smoke tobacco, and minimize your exposure to secondhand smoke.
-Get regular exercise. Try to get at least 30 minutes of activity
each day. Exercise relieves stress and helps you control your
weight.
-Don't let stress build up. The chemicals your body makes in
response to stress make your heart beat harder and faster and
your blood vessels tighten. All this makes blood pressure higher.

Mansell will be leading a Year of Faith Pilgrimage
to Rome and other Italian cities. He will celebrate
Mass at the four major basilicas in Rome:

Peter, St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls
and St. John Lateran. He and the Connecticut
pilgrims will pray that the federal health care
mandate is changed so that freedom of religion is
protected for people of all faiths.

there are many new deployments, please let us know if

may God keep them safe.
