A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR,
FATHER STEVE
(Rev. Monsignor Stephen N. Downes, Pastor)
“The Cost of Discipleship” is the name of a famous
book written by the Lutheran theologian Dietrich
Bonhoeffer who died in a Nazi jail in 1945. Today’s
Eucharist tells us that it costs to be a disciple of Jesus – it cost the
death of Jesus on the cross, so we as disciples must be ready to follow
Christ even when it costs dearly. All three Readings of today’s Mass
speak about the suffering and sacrifice that cannot be avoided by those
who follow God’s way. Yet our religion is not a life of misery, but a life
of love and goodness where we are “transformed by the renewal of our
mind, that we may discern what is the will of God, what is good and
pleasing and perfect” (as St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading). As
Christians we face the Cross of Christ. It cannot be avoided in our life,
but it is a Cross that leads to resurrection and new life, now and hereafter.
• The blessing and opening of our new Parish Hall, Par
ish Offices and meeting rooms will take place after the
10:30 AM Mass today (Sunday, August 31st). Bishop Gerald
Wilkerson, Regional Bishop for the San Fernando Pastoral Region,
will be the main celebrant at the 10:30 AM Mass and bless the new
buildings after the Mass. All are invited to the blessing and open
ing of the new buildings. More information will be found elsewhere
in today’s bulletin.

Monday, September 1st is Labor Day, a day to be thankful for the
ability and opportunity to work. We also remember all who are
unemployed. As is our custom on national holidays, there will be
only one Mass on Labor Day at 8:30 AM and after Mass the parish
offices and campus will be closed for the day.

You are invited to help clean the Church each Monday (including
Labor Day) from 12:00 to 3:00 PM. No registration, no commit
ment – just come and help care for God’s House.

Second Year Confirmation Candidates will meet at St. Mary’s new
Parish Hall this Saturday, September 6th for a one day retreat as
they begin their Second Year of preparation for Confirma
tion. They will be joined by their Confirmation sponsors and par
ents for the Rite of Entrance ceremony during the 5:30 PM Satur
day Mass.

Our Parish Luau Hawaiian Dinner Dance will take place on Satur
day, September 13th from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. in our new Parish
Hall. We encourage you to attend this great parish celebra
tion. Tickets will be on sale at the
Parish Office and will cost $25 (early
bird); $30 after September 6th; $35 at
the door on September 13th. Tickets
will also be on sale in front of Church
after Mass next Sunday at the special
rate of $25.

“El Precio del Discipulado” es el nombre de un fa
moso libro escrito por el teólogo luterano Dietrich
Bonhoeffer, quien murió en un cárcel nazi en 1945. Hoy la Eucaristía
nos dice cuesta ser discípulo de Jesús – cuesta la muerte de Jesús en
la cruz – así que nosotros como discípulos, tenemos que seguir a Cristo
aún cuando el precio sea muy alto. Las tres Lecturas de la Misa de hoy
hablan acerca del sufrimiento y del sacrificio que no puede ser evitado
por aquellos que siguen el camino de Dios. Aún así, nuestra religión no
es una vida de miseria, sino una vida de amor y bondad, en la que somos “transformados por la renovación de nuestra mente, para saber
discernir cuál es la voluntad de Dios, lo que es bueno, lo que le agrada,
lo perfecto”. (como nos dice San Pablo en la Segunda Lectura). Como
cristianos enfrentamos la cruz de Cristo. No puede ser ajena en nuestra
vida, sin embargo es una cruz que nos conduce a la resurreccióy la
nueva vida aquí y en el futuro.
• La bendición y apertura del nuevo Salón Parroquial, oficinas y
salones para juntas, tendrá lugar hoy Domingo 31 de agosto, después
de la Misa de 10:30 AM. La Misa sera presidida por el Señor Obispo
Gerald Wilkerson, Obispo de la Región Pastoral de San Fernando. Asi
mismo bendecirá también los nuevos edificios después de la Sagrada
Eucaristía. Todos están invitados. Encontrarán más detalles en el boletín de hoy.
• Nuestra Cena- Baile Parroquial Hawaiano LUAU, se llevará a cabo
el sábado 13 de septiembre, de 6:00 a 11:00 PM, en nuestro nuevo
Salón Parroquial. Les pedimos que hagan planes con anticipación para
asistir a este gran evento parroquial. Los boletos estarán a la venta en
la ofcina parroquial y tendrán un costo de$25:00, para los primeros compradors, $30:00 después del 6 de septiembre y $ 35:00 en la puerta el
día 13. Los boletos se estarán vendiendo también enfrente de la Iglesia
en todas las Misas, al precio especial de $25:00.
• EL lunes 1º de septiembre es el Día del Trabajo. Es un día en el
cual tenemos la oportunidad de dar gracias a Dios por la oportunidad de
trabajar. Así como de recordar a los que no tienen trabajo. Como es
nuestra costumbre en los días festivos, habrá una sola Misa a las 8:30
AM y después de eso las oficinas y la Parroquia en general se cerrará
por el resto del día.
• Les invitamos a ayudar en la limpieza de la Iglesia, aún en el Día
del Trabajo, de 12:00 a 3:00 PM. No necesitan registrarse, ni hacer
ningún compromiso, solamente vengan y ayuden en el cuidado de la
Casa de Dios.

Los Candidatos del Segundo Año de Confirmación
se reunirán en
el nuevo Salón Parroquial este sábado 6 de septiembre,
para un día de retiro, con el que comenzarán su preparación para la Confirmación. Serán acompañados por

que él no está disponible para servir en Santa
María. Esperamos pronto anunciar la selección de un nuevo coordinador, que trabaje
con todos los grupos de jóvenes y los programas de Confirmación de nuestra Parroquia.
In last Sunday’s bulletin we announced the arrival of our new Parish Youth Minister. Unfortunately, we learnt last week that he was not
available to work at St. Mary’s. We hope to have an announcement
soon about the selection of a new Youth Minister to serve all the teen
groups and the Youth Confirmation programs of our parish.
• Adults seeking to know more about the Catholic Church or how to
become a member of the Church or to receive Confirmation and Holy
Communion are invited to come to the RCIA Inquiry Class on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:15 PM in the Conference Centre or on Sunday
morning from 9:00 to 10:15 in Room 6 of the School or the program in
Spanish (RICA) in the Conference Center each Sunday morning from

Todos están invitados a la bendición y apertura de nuestronuevo Salón Parroquial, oficinas y salones para reuniones,
este Domingo 31 de agosto. El Obispo Gerald Wilkerson,
Obispo de la Región Pastoral de San Fernando, sera el celebrante que presidirá la Sagrada Eucaristía y después bendecirá los nuevos edificios.
All are invited to the blessing and opening of our new Parish Hall,
Parish Offices and meeting rooms this Sunday, August 31st. Bishop

Enfrente de los nuevos edificios se colocarán las estatuas de
Santa María y de San José, que estaban enfrente de la Iglesia antigua. Se colocarán 14 vidrios de colores con imágenes religiosas
de los que estaban en la antigua Iglesia en el Salón Parroquial y
tres en los salones para juntas; una del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús,
otro de la Sagrada Familia y otro de la Santísima Virgen de Guadalupe, los cuales identificarán a cada uno de los salones. Esperamos que la capilla de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe sea terminada para el día de la bendición o un poco después.
In front of the new buildings will be the statues of Holy Mary and St.
Joseph which stood in front of the Old Church. Fourteen stained glass
windows from the Old Church will be seen in the new Parish Hall and
three windows can be seen in the meeting rooms which will be called
the Sacred Heart Room, the Holy Family Room and Our Lady of Guadalupe Room (because of the windows placed there). We hope the
new shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe in front of the new buildings will
be completed by August 31st or soon afterwards.
The new Parish Offices are part of the new buildings. It will be a
few weeks before everything is in place in the new Parish Offices which
are located next to the Church to serve all. The old Parish Offices will
then become the Religious Education Offices for the parish.
Your financial support for our Capital Campaign, “A Time to Build”,
now and in the future is very important for the construction and the $12
million in loans needed for the new Church, parking lot and landscaping, new Hall, Parish Offices and meeting rooms. Many thanks to all
who made donations or pledges so our new parish buildings could be
completed! We have much work to do in coming months and years to
pay for these much needed buildings.

Dear Community of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church
Greetings! My name is Frank Bujanda, I am a previous parishioner and the person who had been anticipated to fill the Youth Minister position at the parish. This
past year I served as a Volunteer in Ecuador. While serving abroad I applied for ministry positions nationwide. I later came to accept the position as youth minister for your parish. In the remaining months prior to my arrival a series of events led me to be considered for a university ministry position. A week ago I was
offered the position as Retreat Minister. After much prayer and discernment I have realized that I am being guided out of parish ministry into university ministry. I
have decided to accept the position at the university. I must regretfully decline the position as Youth Minister at St. Mary’s Parish. I wanted to apologize to all
those who had anticipated my arrival, especially the youth of the parish. I have no doubt that you will find another person that will work side by side with the
youth of the parish. Thank you for your openness and understanding.

Volunteers Needed
Have you been feeling a tug in your heart, calling you to serve the Lord on a deeper level? The Antelope Valley Pregnancy Counseling Center has
a place for you! We need willing and able volunteers to help make a difference in the life of a woman facing a crisis pregnancy. If you have just a
few hours each week to give and would like more information, call Ellen at 947-0400 between 11:00AM & 3:00PM Monday through Thursday, or
leave a message at 947-6912.
Our volunteer classes will be held on Saturday, September 6, September 13, and September 20, 10:30AM – 1:00PM. Attendance all three
weeks required. The classes will be held at the Women’s Clinic, 2270 East Palmdale Boulevard, Suite K, Palmdale.
We need: Volunteer Counselors (No degree necessary; we provide the training), Hot Line Counselors, and Fundraising helpers. Pro-life nurses
with ultrasound training are also needed.
