Blackboard Tune-Up Series: Where Andragogy Meets Blackboard

Blackboard Tune-Up Series: Where Andragogy Meets Blackboard
Learn to use all that Blackboard has to offer by attending the Center of Learning Excellence Blackboard Tune-Up Series.
The series will consist of 2 interactive workshops, paired with open lab time, and personalized consults to help you walk
away with ready to go elements of your next course. Join us to get a better understanding of why you may want to use
Blackboard tools, and then how to make it happen. Attendance at both workshops in the series coupled with a consultation is recommended to get the most out of the Tune-Up series. One service credit will be awarded for each component.
OCTOBER–Discussion Board Month:
1. Workshop Roundtable–The Whys and Hows of Discussion Boards: We’ll start by sharing ideas on why
discussion boards are an important part of classroom communication. Then move on to learning about the elements
of an engaging discussion board forum. Finally, we’ll wrap up with the mechanics of creating a discussion board
forum in Blackboard, and then enhancing it by creating course links, editing text, adding video, images, and links.
Friday, October 17, 2014 | 9:30–11 am | Metro CLE–MSS 313
**It’s recommended that you sign up for individual or small group consult with Cindy Potteiger or Cheryl
Knight between Monday, October 20 and Thursday, October 30. There will be a sign up sheet at the workshop
or you may contact them before. During this consultation we can delve deeper into the use and creation of discussion boards. Then you’ll be better prepared for part 2 of the Tune-Up Series–Grading and Rubrics with Discussion
Boards.
2. Workshop Roundtable–Grading and Rubrics with Discussion Boards: In this session we’ll begin by
discussing the grading of discussion boards; what works well and what does not. Also covered will be the methods
of offering discussion board credit and how using a rubric could reduce your grading time. We’ll also explore the use
of discussion board groups and their usefulness in managing the discussion board. The mechanics of creating a
rubric and assigning it to your existing discussion board will be included too.
By the end of the open lab time, you should have a well-designed discussion board forum with an
associated rubric ready to use.
