It contains the revised versions of the original prayers of his heart. Many of them were written during wakeful night hours when, as an insomniac, he would turn his sleeplessness into prayerfulness. This prayer on old age may be of help to so many of you who are navigating that new and unknown stage of your life. O LORD GOD, who leaves us not nor forsakes us in the time of age; Show me, as my strength fails, an even fuller, lovelier light of your glory shining over and about me. O my soul, give thanks! There is that glory, let me find mine. Grant me new stores of gentleness, gratitude, patience; new learning of the Suffering of my Lord; new dignity of Grace. Make my life wholly his life: his heart, my heart; his breath, my breath, breathing love to the very end. Be my support in weakness, my courage in the dark and in pain, my aid, day and night, my company in loneliness, my rest. O my soul, give thanks! For all that you take from me, you give what is better, and guide to the best. O my soul, give thanks! Be your love my bed and covering, be your Christ my living Bread; your Spirit, my strength to the end. Bring me forth, forgiven, loved, and loving, child and servant forever, into your joy. I just managed to squeeze this interview with Sandy in between her trip to Chicago and the annual “Keep It Wild” (she says, “anything but”) sojourn with her daughter and other long-time lady friends in Lake Tahoe. Trips to the Amazon and the Panama Canal happened this Spring and three weeks in India in November are just ahead! Sandy and Ed Sproat have been married for 50 years, have two sons and a daughter and nine grand children. Half of her twenty moves can be attributed to Ed’s various assignments within the Bell System. They currently enjoy a getaway home in the foothills of South Carolina. Sandy has actually been on the Chapel Board since June, chairing the Worship Committee, (Altar Guild, Communion, Lay Readers, Ushers, Flowers, as well as Seasonal Christian decorations). Spearheading the Lenten Meditation Brochure for the last three years has been a pleasure for her, as well as serving as a Deacon to thirteen Chapel members over the past two years. “Being a Deacon is a privilege and a responsibility - I keep these folks in my prayers every day.” Ed and Sandy often serve Communion at the 11;15am service and count their work at Hope House as an honor. “I love the Chapel - the services, Ted’s sermons, the choir, the members, the staff, the beautiful setting, the study programs, the outreach - I am proud to be part of it all.” in the Take Stock in Children program was a true highlight. Today Kelly is married and attending the University of South Alabama, working toward a Physical Therapy degree. They stay in touch via Facebook! Sandy served as the President of the Board of Micah’s Place several years ago, is a Guardian for the Boys and Girls Club, loves to play Bridge, and can be found on the treadmill early most mornings! Sandy (age 5) and her mom modeled for the Mother and Daughter version of Toni Home Permanents, both with naturally curly hair! Google it, and you’ll find this was a “very hot” advertising campaign in the 50’s. This photo shows Sandy modeling for a newspaper ad for a Chicago Marshall Fields ... just a few years ago! Isn’t she a cutie. In a previous church, Hope Lutheran, Sandy developed and led a puppet ministry for children, which enhanced the Sunday sermon for young and old alike. They created “The Hope Homilies” whose original scripts went on to be published by the Lutheran Church. In addition to the puppets, Sandy led a girl’s Dance Choir at their church! During her early years of employment, Sandy was named “Man of the Year” by TWA in Chicago and was awarded one share of TWA stock, thereby making her an owner, albeit a small one. Raised a Roman Catholic, Sandy embodies the interdenominational character of our Chapel and like many of our members, she represents the abundant energy that is making a Christian impact on people and social organizations in our community. Board Member Spotlight By Ed Weihenmayer The Guild meets on the third Monday of the month (October 20) at 11:00am in the Meeting Room. Is God calling you to serve as a Chapel Deacon? Come to the October meeting! Page 2 AL RICHARD Member-at-Large In 1999, Al Richard and his wife Jackie became members of the Chapel and have participated actively in the life of the Chapel ever since. Now Al Richard Al will fill an open seat on our Governing Board as a member-at-large, with the expectation of leading the Building & Grounds Committee in 2015. But Al is no stranger to the dedication that helps the Chapel to run and grow. When the congregation voted in 2004 to greatly expand the Chapel’s physical facilities beyond the original Sanctuary building, Al took on the Co-Project Manager job on the Building Committee. Along with Bill Salmond, Al worked with our architect, the Nassau County Building Department, our General Contractor and sub-contractors, to say nothing of the other Chapel Committees that helped define our needs. The result was the excellent new facilities that Chapel members enjoy today. It was a big and challenging job that took almost two years of attention and leadership! Plus the Project came in at budgeted cost, except for the unforeseen need to replace lagoon bulkheads at the rear of Chapel property. Al Richard springs from a background in Rhode Island (where he and Jackie grew up), with college degrees in engineering and business, and a varied career in plant management, land development/construction and executive search. He and Jackie have been happily married for 58 years with three children and, now, six grandchildren. The couple lives full-time on Amelia and Al gladly credits Jackie for keeping the household books just as she did for his business activity over the years. In the time since our expanded facilities were dedicated, Al frequently has served as an usher, greeting those attending our Sunday services. But now his involvement in the Chapel will once again become highly concentrated, as he oversees all the activity necessary to keep Chapel facilities working and looking good. The congregation is most fortunate to have Al Richard on the job and on the Governing Board. Board Member Spotlight By Alan Donaldson I AM YOUR GOD By Janet McGugan I am your God, I am your fortress. I am your rock, I am your salvation. I hold you in my hand. I protect you with my victorious right arm. I fill you with my strength, my power and my love. I will never forsake you. I shall never let you stray from me. I shall lead you to the mountain tops and through the valleys also. I shall be a light to lighten your path when darkness encroaches. The darkest night I shall make as day for you. I shall admonish you. I shall teach you. I shall guide you and lead you Janet McGugan into the knowledge of all truth. I shall make you strong and purify your heart with my healing holy fire. I pick you up and carry you when you can no longer walk. I shall hold you steady when you stumble. I shall wash you clean with my living waters. I call you by name, I shall be with you forever. I am all things to you, you are all things to me. Page 3 EXERCISE YOUR BRAIN By Dana McCoy, R.N. Dana McCoy, R.N. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Everyone knows the benefits of exercising our bodies. Exercise is good for our physical and our mental health. We all strive to be disciplined about what we eat and how we take care of our bodies. This month I want to talk about something a little different. I want to talk about ... ways to exercise your brain. YES — you can exercise your brain. Following is a list of some ways to keep your mind sharp. Do puzzles – Sudoku and Crossword puzzles are both excellent for your brain Wikipedia Random – this function of Wikipedia pulls up random topics. You can use this to explore a new random topic each day. New topics and new information will help keep your brain healthy. Practice simple math problems – working a quick page of simple math problems will help keep your brain nimble and sharp. Write things by hand instead of using a keyboard – this is particularly effective when you are learning something new. Making manual notes helps your brain retain information better than typing it. Tell stories (to yourself or others) – it is easier to retain information in the context of a story. You can use stories to learn something new or retain existing knowledge. Lumosity – is a website that specializes in brain-training activities. There is a free version. The premium version has a fee. These activities are designed to exercise your brain. Meditate – the ability to calm your brain and clear out the clutter will help reduce stress and will make your brain clearer and sharper. These are just a few items, but you can see the general theme of brain exercises. In less than an hour a day you can work-out the most important part of your body — your brain. Flu shots will be available at the Chapel on Sunday October 26 from 8:30am until 11:30am in Fellowship Hall. The flu vaccine takes about two weeks to take effect so taking a flu shot now will have you covered in time! ALL THE WAY TO BETHLEHEM Ken Medema & Chapel Choir Ken Medema As we look forward to Christmas expect to be blessed by our choir’s Christmas program coming on December 7. Ken Medema, a well known Christian musician will be singing with the choir in a program entitled All the Way to Bethlehem. Ken, a man who has been blind from birth, is a unique musician, an excellent singer, pianist and keyboard player. He performs nationwide and has been on national television. He is known for his ability to improvise at the piano, composing music on the spot. His compositions encompass a wide variety of Christian music that everyone will enjoy. This concert will be an exciting event in our Chapel, one that we will always remember. Several of Ken’s songs are written for children so this year we will also have a children’s choir made up of community children and children who attend our second service. We have about fifty singers joining our choir for this performance. If you would like to sing with us please come to our Wednesday afternoon rehearsals from 4:00-5:00pm every week in the Chapel Choir Room. YOU are welcome here! Please call Don Edwards for more information about this performance: (904) 277-4414 / [email protected] Page 4 DARLA & RON SANDS By Bea Walker called United in Christ Jesus. Ron and Darla Sands Meet Ron and Darla Sands, members of the Chapel congregation and the Off-Island group. The Sands have been married for nearly twenty years, have three children and two young grandchildren, ages 6 and 3. In 2006, after being long-time residents of Jacksonville, Ron and Darla moved into their retirement home in North Hampton, a golf club community located in the French village of Yulée, as Ron affectionately calls his mainland community. Originally from Houston, Texas Darla’s career is in the fields of accounting and administration. She currently serves as executive assistant to both the Chairman/CEO and the Chairman Emeritus, as well as office manager for a financial investment company. Her organizational and people skills allow Darla to manage her significant responsibilities. Ron hales from Kearney, Nebraska and has had a successful career as a clinician, trainer and consultant in the mental health field, with emphasis on substance abuse and trauma of children, adolescents and adults. Currently semi-retired with an independent practice, Ron also has worked with the Jacksonville Sheriff ’s Office for fifteen years, as well as other correctional institutions and diagnostic facilities. It is evident from his employment history, that Ron has a heart to help those who are suffering. His work calls to mind Matthew 25:40. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (NIV) With Ron’s lifetime of service to those hurting, it is not surprising that oldest son Shane has a missions ministry Ron and Darla enjoy outdoor activities and vacations are often spent in the mountains hiking and kayaking in some of our national parks. They just experienced an Alaskan cruise and enjoyed exploring the beauty of several cities, including Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka, and Ketchikan. Darla shared how God led them to the Chapel, “We stopped to have lunch at Marche Burette Deli one weekend and decided to take a leisurely stroll through the shops and beautiful surrounding areas. We walked through the nature center and around the corner and saw the Chapel. Instantly taken by its appearance, we wanted to see more, so we explored the inside and were equally impressed. It was not long afterwards that our pastor decided to leave the church where we were members, so we decided to visit the Chapel. We were first greeted by Susan and Dino Casillas; they were both so welcoming. Susan wouldn’t let us leave without a tour and everyone we met was just as warm and friendly as the Casillas - as if we were already part of the Chapel family. After hearing Pastor Ted Schroder’s sermon, coupled with the angelic choir and heavenly musicians, we knew God had led us to our new church home. We love everything about the church, but it’s the people we love the most.” The Sands are active members of the Chapel family, participating in off-islander fellowships, helping on landscaping committee workdays, and volunteering for Ron, Dennis Schroeder, fellowship coffee service on & Sam Boyd Spreading some Sundays. They normally pinestraw around the attend the 9:15am service, so if Sower last Spring you haven’t met them yet, please make an effort to seek them out. It’s rumored Ron has one of the most joyful smiles in the Chapel family! All visitors to the Chapel are cordially invited to attend a question and answer session on Chapel Membership Pastor Ted Schroder will be on hand to answer your questions Sunday, October 19, 10:30am, Library Page 5 BOOK REVIEW By Carol Ann McKay THE CHRISTIAN ATHEIST Believing in God but Living as if He Doesn’t Exist By Craig Groeschel Does your belief in God impact your life? If the answer is no, you may be a Christian Atheist. The Christian Atheist is an easy read that addresses issues many Christians still struggle with long after they’ve professed faith in Christ. The author examines a number of these issues: Craig Groeschel • • • • • • not really knowing God remaining ashamed of your past being unsure of God’s love for you not believing in prayer not trusting that God is fair failing to forgive • • • • • • not believing you can change clinging to worry and anxiety pursuing happiness at any cost trusting more in money than in God not sharing your faith not being part of the church Many people believe in God and the Gospel of Christ enough to benefit from it, but not enough to change their lives. There are stubborn inconsistencies between what we profess to believe and how we live. Craig Groeschel discovers the real key to faith and points out what are likely to be some key areas in the reader’s life which prohibit an intimate relationship with God. His conclusions are non-judgmental, with narratives of his own struggle during his college years and even as a pastor in the church he founded. He writes that we must believe in God and Christ’s Gospel enough to give our lives to it. Anything less, he says, doesn’t seem like real Christianity. Craig Groeschel is the founding and senior pastor of LifeChurch.tv, a pace-setting multicampus church, with more than eighty weekly worship experiences in fourteen locations, including an online campus. Craig and his wife, Amy, and their six children live in the Edmond, Oklahoma area, where LifeChurch.tv began in 1996. Craig is the author of multiple books, three more of which are in our Chapel Library: Altar Ego, Becoming Who God Says You Are; Love, Sex, and the Happily Ever After; and Fight, Winning the Battles That Matter Most. These are Biblical, down-to-earth, inspiring, and helpful books which will benefit all Christians. The men were treated to a scrumptious breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits, oatmeal, fresh fruit, juice and coffee prepared by Billy Allen, Don Boyd and Joe Masasco. Pastor Ted Schroder led the men in prayer. Following breakfast, Ted introduced the morning’s guest, Dr. H. Neil Helton, Ph.D. Dr. Helton is a native of Jacksonville and is a graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic College. He holds graduate degrees from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), Dr. Neil Helton Western Kentucky University (M.A.), Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Th.M.) and Florida State University (Ph.D.). Dr. Helton teaches Classical Humanities and Philosophy at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Dr. Helton was the founding pastor at Amelia Baptist Church in 1990 and has served there continuously for 24 years. Neil is married to Pam, who serves as Amelia Baptist’s Music Minister. Together they have two grown children, Jonathan and Brittany. Amelia Baptist also serves as the meeting place for Community Bible Study on Amelia Island. Dr. Helton began his presentation by greeting the men as “partners in the Gospel,” noting many friends, acquaintances and familiar faces from CBS. He stated his belief that CBS plays an important role in our calling to be ministers of the Gospel, a Gospel that transcends culture, tradition, socio-economic conditions and environments. Dr. Helton taught on the Gospel and analogized the North Star and Christ. As the universe revolves around the constant, fixed point of the North Star, so, he said, does Christianity revolve around “Christology” and “Atonement.” He developed this teaching using Galatians 5:6, “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor un-circumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love”, and Galatians 5:7, “You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the Truth?” Paul preached that we are saved by grace, alone, through faith, alone, in Christ, alone. Adding customs, traditions and circumcision adds nothing. Christ, alone, is sufficient to get us to God. Dr. Helton closed by repeating the theme that Christ is the one and only North Star in Christianity and he prayed that all hear the beauty of the Gospel and receive it. In response to a question from Pastor Schroder concerning outreach decisions, Dr. Helton answered that missions should meet the litmus test of Christ as the North Star. Our September Men’s Breakfast proved both meaningful and enjoyable. As this ministry grows they are partnering with other ministries. One such ministry, the Not Today Coalition, has as their goal to fund the construction of Good Shepherd Schools. Leah and Mike Gadd, president of the Not Today Coalition, will be in the Chapel Library on Sunday, October 12 at 10:30am. Please stop in between morning worship services to meet Leah and Mike and hear about this wonderful ministry happening in India. Below is some information about the Good Shepherd Community Church, copied from their website at http://www.omusa.org The Good Shepherd Community Church Oppressed for centuries, many Dalit kids grew up hearing from their parents that they were worthless. This is based on the old Hindu belief that your caste (or rank in society) is based on good or bad deeds from previous lives. If you are born Dalit, you have much to be punished for. You are told God doesn’t love you. You are taught it’s impossible to change your position in life. You live in poverty, without health care, and without justice in the legal system ... until now. In 2001, Dalits began to stand up for themselves, formally rejecting the caste system and the beliefs behind it. The Christians in India stood in solidarity with them, and huge numbers of Dalits turned to Christianity, discovering they are loved by God, and have dignity and value as His image bearers. thousands of Dalit churches and hundreds of Dalit pastors. This is the Good Shepherd Community Church (GSCC) movement. Every GSCC fellowship is involved in the holistic transformation of their communities. Pastors and members serve together tutoring children, teaching literacy classes, visiting inmates, and feeding the poor. OM India trains pastors through these ministries in various places. There are now nearly 100 schools available for Dalit children, something unheard of ten years ago. God has birthed an expansive spiritual awakening among the Dalit people like nothing experienced before in India. Please continue praying for this tremendous move of God among the Dalit people. Since then, this move of God has swept across India, with more than 1 million Dalits now following Christ. At times, Operation Mobilization (OM) teams have planted new churches at the rate of one every other day. The result is an indigenous church movement, linking Operation Mobilization (OM) is a Christian mission organization, inspiring and equipping believers to expand God’s kingdom. OM USA is your entry point from the States into that mission movement. Soul Food Daily Devotions for the Hungry Volume 4 October, November and December Now available at the Chapel.
