Community Events for Families
Port Saint John Little League, serving the Port
Saint John and Canaveral Groves area, will be
hosting a "Movie in the Park" night on October
18th and a Halloween Dance on October 24th.
The Port Saint John Little League (PSJLL) is a
local affiliate of Little League Baseball, founded
on the principals of Character, Courage, and
Loyalty since 1939.
On Saturday Night, October 18th,
PSJLL hosts "Movie Night in the
Park" featuring the classic Halloween
themed movie- Hocus Pocus starring
Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and
Sarah Jessica Parker. This familyfriendly Disney® movie is FREE to
all and food concessions will be available for purchase. The movie begins
at 8 PM and Fay Park is located at the ball fields
at 4700 Fay Blvd., Port Saint John.
On Friday, October 24th, PSJLL hosts a Halloween Dance for all children ages 8-15 at the
Port Saint John Community Center located at
6650 Corto Road in Port Saint John. The event
will be held from 7:00-10:00 PM and will feature
Halloween themed events,
a themed photo prop area,
food concessions, and much
more. Halloween costumes
are welcome, but for security reasons, masks will
not be permitted. Admission for this event is only
$7.00. The dance is open to everyone, and will
benefit Port Saint John Little League.

is a volunteer-driven organization
dedicated to teaching area youth the
fundamentals of baseball and softball,
and to bettering the communities they
serve through outreach and community

Brevard County Building Report - There
were 71 single-family home permits issued in
August, the highest month this year. Not only
that, it’s the highest number in any month of all
records shown which started in January, 2008.
There have been 365 single-family building
permits issued so far in 2014. Total construction
value for August, 2014 was $ 36,654,081, which
includes all construction, not just single-family
homes. That also is a record, as it’s the highest
total construction value since August, 2006.

Suicide and Homeless - On Friday, September 12th, Florida Today had an article, “Famous
or family suicide: Let's talk about what hurts,” on
the effects of suicide on families. Belinda Steward, 2-1-1 communications manager and former
Florida Today Writer, explained how suicide had
affected her life. The story made some informa-
tion I received even more relevant.
I attended a meeting of the Community
Health Partnership on Wednesday, September
10th, where I was given a paper that had statistics on Suicide and Homelessness in Brevard. I
was stunned when I read that suicide is the 10th
leading cause of death in the U.S., and the third
leading cause in the state of Florida. In 2013,
there were 125 suicide deaths in Brevard.
In Brevard County, over 47% of children
are living in poverty, up 17% from 2010. There
are over 2,200 homeless students living in our
county, but 33% of those were withdrawn from
school to unknown areas. I assume they moved
from the county. The homeless rate for children
has increased 300% since 2009. This is not acceptable. My heartfelt thanks to the non-profits
that take on this task of care and help for the
victims.

Foreclosures in Florida - Earlier was the
good side for Florida homeowners, now for the
bad. The Palm Beach Post, in a September 11
story titled “New foreclosures in Florida increase
for first time in 17 months,” said RealtyTrac
reported 6,468 Florida Foreclosures, a 74% increase from July.
The following gets very complicated, and
shows a very dark side of what the Florida government is really doing to homeowners. Although
I got the following from the Tampa Bay Tribune,
the Editor states it was actually published by
The Center for Public Integrity, (publicintegrity.
org), a nonprofit, nonpartisan investigative news
organization in Washington, D.C. In this September 10 story titled, “Rush to Clear Foreclosure
Backlog Costs Homeowners,” it states that the
Florida Legislature and Florida Supreme Court
have told judges to clear the dockets of foreclosures, so judges are pushing tens of thousands of
properties over to banks, even when the banks
and homeowners have both asked for more time
due to negotiations.

“Florida's so-called foreclosure initiative was
launched in July, 2013, when the state Legislature
and Budget Commission together allocated $36
million of the $334 million the state won when it
settled previous allegations of foreclosure fraud
against the five biggest banks.”
“The state Supreme Court set a target of disposing of 256,000 foreclosure cases each year for
three years. That works out to about 700 cases per
day — if everyone works weekends and vacation days. The courts have hired retired judges
solely to hear foreclosures and case managers
to move cases forward. These clerks and judges
schedule hearings and trials even if the parties
don't want them.”
What is really bad is that in Florida, federal
law doesn’t seem to make a difference. In the
story, one homeowner, “argued that new federal
regulations barred JPMorgan from foreclosing
because Lopez had asked for a loan modification.” Judge Karl Grube stated the federal law
doesn’t apply in Florida. The judge stated it was
a state court and it was questionable whether a

state judge could follow federal law. Is that ridiculous or what? In the story, “Lynn Drysdale of
Jacksonville Area Legal Aid said she and many
other lawyers have reported such incidents to the
federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,
but the agency declined to comment.”
"They dealt with it as a court system problem,"
said Mike Fasano, a former Republican lawmaker
from New Port Richey who opposed the two bills
passed last year to clear the foreclosure backlog.
"It was, How can we speed up forcing people out
of their homes?”
Please read the second reference (www.tampabay.com) below. I only covered a small part
of a very complicated article. I didn’t go into
detail on how judges are ignoring homeowners
who are trying to stay in their homes. I didn’t go
into how those same judges are allowing banks
to use fraudulent documents to justify foreclosures. I didn’t even cover how Florida courts are
again allowing robo-testifiers, people who have
no first-hand knowledge of the court cases, but
are taught to testify for banks on how to justify

The story made me ashamed I lived in Florida.
The story sounded like all the same reasons the
Justice Department and 49 states originally sued
the five largest mortgage servicers; Citigroup,
Ally Financial (formerly GMAC), JPMorgan
Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo. The
only difference now is it’s our Governor, our
state legislature and our Florida court system
that have failed us.

The Real Story about Florida Jobs - There’s
been a lot of crowing about the amount of jobs
created in Florida the last four years, but at least
some of the hype isn’t necessarily what you
would be expecting.

According to a story in the Palm Beach Post
by Mike Schneider titled, “In Florida, service
workers come from elsewhere,” new workers in
arts, science, business and management tended to
be from New York, Georgia and Asia. New workers in transportation and the service fields came
from New York, Georgia and the Caribbean. New
workers in sales and office jobs came from New
York, Georgia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
If you’re not in the top 25% highest paying
jobs, you are being left behind on income, according to a Palm Beach Post Story by Jeff Ostrowski,
titled “FIU study: Florida wage growth flowing
to highest-paid workers.” They reviewed Florida
International University’s annual State of Working Florida Report, which showed the highest
paying jobs in Florida’s pay rose 47% from 1980
to 2013, but if you were in the lowest paying jobs
in Florida, pay growth only went up 14%, a heck
of a difference. But recent years have done little
to help. Even those highest paying jobs didn’t
do well in the state of Florida. According to the
story, “For instance, the average wage for the top
quarter of workers was stagnant over the past
decade, barely budging from $88,116 in 2005 to
$88,618 in 2013.”
No wonder The Tampa Tribune’s story by
William Marsh titled, “Job concerns linger in
Florida, USF survey finds,” showed jobs was
the top issue among Floridians, although it had
dropped from 44% to 30%. Makes you wonder
if we’ve really been moving in the right direction
the last four years.

Scotland Vote - I am writing this article on
the Sunday before the September 18th vote by
Scots on the contentious issue on whether to
stay or become independent from Great Britain
(United Kingdom). Scotland, Wales, Northern
Ireland and England are an integral part of the
United Kingdom, unlike the 54 countries that are
members of the British Commonwealth.
There has been a surge of politicians in Westminster pointing out the monetary drawbacks, as
the Royal Bank of Scotland has said it will immediately relocate to England. Joining the Royal
Bank of Scotland are 3 more major banks and
Scotland’s major insurance company. They have
said if the vote is to leave the United Kingdom,
in 3 days they will be gone from Scotland.
Mick Jagger wrote an open letter to the people
of Scotland saying that, “We value our bonds of
citizenship with you…What unites us is greater
than what divides us.” There is a “Let’s Stay
Together” campaign that boasts some prestigious figures, such as Steven Hawking, Sir Steve
Redgrave, Dame Judi Dench and 200 other high
profile English and Scots from the worlds of Art,
Sport, Literature and Science.
Monarchy and Military - Apparently the
Queen is very upset. When she became Queen
she took an oath to protect her people, which
includes the Scots. She has kept her promises of
her coronation. She also has Kings and Queens
of Scotland in her blood. The Queen’s mother
was Scottish.
The military in Great Britain has had Scottish
Regiments for 300 years. All military swear allegiance to the Queen or King, not to the country,
originally done to stop the government from turning the armies on the people. The Scot regiments
have been fearless and very loyal to the Queen.
They have been in every major battle Britain has
been in since they joined the British Army. Their
battle honors are extremely impressive.
My grandfather fought alongside of a Scot
Regiment in World War I. He said as soon as the
signal was given to leave the trenches, they would
practically jump out, screaming and shouting
insults whilst running towards the Germans. The
Germans were scared to death and called them
“The Ladies from Hell,” referring to the kilts that
were worn to battle at that time.
Then there are some English that have the attitude of one English journalist, John Polly, who
wrote, “The truth is, if we English were given a
vote on Scottish independence, there is a strong
possibility we would vote YES.”
On September 18th the Scots will have their
future of Scotland in their own hands. That is
how it should be.
Next month I will write on the plan the state
has for a “Super Region” composed of Orange,
Osceola and Brevard Counties.

Registration for crafts vendors for the 21st
Annual Fox Lake Christmas Festival of Crafts
has begun. The Fox Lake Christmas Festival of
Crafts will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fox
Lake Park in Titusville on Saturday, Nov. 15.
Only handmade and homemade crafts will be
offered for sale at the event, which is sponsored
by the Brevard County Parks and Recreation
Department’s North Area Parks Operations.
Registration for crafter spots will begin Monday,
Aug. 18. Please be advised there has been a fee
increase for crafter spots; outside open area is
$25 plus tax and under pavilion is $35 plus tax.
Concessions will be available for purchase. Admission is free.
Office hours for all registrations are 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Sandrift
Community Center, 585 N Singleton Avenue,
Titusville. Applications for food vendors will be
available beginning Monday, Sep. 15, at Sandrift
Community Center, or by email at jann.faiga@
brevardparks.com.
Selected food vendors will be notified by
Friday, Oct. 17. Vendor selection is based on, but
not limited to, application submittal date, price
of product(s) to the public, proper licensing and
appropriateness of the product(s) to the nature
of the event.
Afterschool Arts and Crafts
An Afterschool Arts and Crafts program is
offered every Thursday afternoon for children
ages 8-12 at Rotary Park Nature Center, 1899 S.
Courtenay Parkway, Merritt Island. The cost is $5
per class, and each class runs from 3:30 p.m. to
4:30 p.m. A different fun project is planned each
week for youngsters. Pre-registration is required
for this program.

BSA Troop 359 in Action!
The Troop had a busy August, as the Scouts
were finishing their merit badges from Summer
Camp. They spent a Saturday at the Police Hall
of Fame for some shooting practice. August
finished out with a Court of Honor to award the
Scouts with advancement and the merit badges
that were earned at Summer Camp. Out of the 85
merit badges that our 18 Scouts took at Summer
Camp, 55 were awarded at the Court of Honor.
The other 30 merit badges are still being completed and will be awarded upon completion.
Another award that the troop earned at
summer camp was an individual for shotgun
shooting. One of our scouts won first place in
the shotgun competition. Check out our website

Classic Car Show
The SPCA of Brevard 4th Annual Hot Dogs, Cool Cats and
Wild Rides Car Show will be on Saturday, October 4th at Fox
Lake Park, 4400 Fox Lake Rd. in Titusville, from 1-4 pm, with
registration beginning at 10 am. Over one hundred classic,
vintage and muscle cars participated in last year’s event and
many more are expected this year. This year’s event will be held
in conjunction with the Kiwanis Kountry Jamboree and BBQ
Competition. It’s a day of fun to save lives.
Participants who wish to register a car for the show can
download registration forms at www.spcabrevard.com or stop
by the SPCA to pick one up. The fee to register at the event the
fee is $20. The first 100 cars registered will receive a t-shirt, a
free ticket to enter in the drawing to win an iPad Mini, a dash
plaque and a meal ticket. There will also be 25 trophies awarded,
including The Cat’s Meow, Club Participation, Best of Show,
Best Corvette, Best Mustang, Best Paint, Best Truck, Best Pre1949, 1950-1959, 1960-1969, 1970-1979, Post-1980 and 13
Participants’ Choice.
Admission is free to the public. This year will also include
a Poker Walk around Fox Lake Park, with a $25 cash prize to
the winner. All event proceeds will go towards the care of the
homeless animals at the SPCA of Brevard. Plus, bring a bag of
clumping cat litter and receive a FREE ticket to enter the drawing

Local Doctors Help Local Athletes
Parrish Medical Group’s (PMG) team of physicians and staff completed 279 sports physicals
for area high school students and contributed
$2,790 to the students’ athletic programs.
Annually, PMG hosts two sports physical
events to help student athletes and raise money
for their schools. The events were held in May
and July in Port St. John and Titusville. This
year’s PMG team of physicians who supported
the sports physical events included:
* Dr. Anthony Allotta, board-certified internist, fellowship trained in sports medicine, and
team doctor for Space Coast Junior/Senior High
School, Port St. John
* Dr. Michael Magee, board-certified orthopedic surgeon and team doctor for Titusville
High School
* Dr. Erica O’Bryan, board-certified pediatrician
* Dr. Julio Pagan, board-certified internist
According to the doctors, “This is an opportunity to ensure our student athletes are physically
able to compete,” said Dr. Allotta, “If a student
has a physical condition that would prevent or
prohibit their participation in sports, we can
identify that early on.”
Dr. Magee said helping local schools is an
added plus. “Everyone knows schools can use
every dollar they can get, so our program enables
us to help local kids and families at lower cost
while benefiting their schools.”
Dr. O’Bryan stated, “We had a great turn out
and I was happy to participate. An event such as
this helps ensure safe participation for the athlete
at the start of the season, and can help determine
necessary accommodations and restrictions to
specific activities. The need for further evaluation
or testing can also be identified prior to competition to pinpoint or exclude certain conditions that
may cause harm.”
Dr. Pagan, said, “Helping student athletes stay
healthy is a win-win for students, their families
and our communities. I'm happy to play a small
part in that.”

screenings and representatives from many health

Free Caregiver Education Classes
Hospice of St. Francis will be offering Caregiving Education and Resource classes for current and future caregivers, their family and friend
helpers at the Space Coast Cancer Center located
at 8725 N. Wickham Rd., Viera. The training
program consists of six-90 minute class series.
The class series begins Monday, October 6th
and concludes Thursday, October 23rd. Classes
will be held for three weeks on Mondays and
Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
All classes were developed nationally in
response to the issues caregivers, themselves,
identified. Each class focuses on different issues
a caregiver will face. Hospice of St. Francis’
programs and training classes are offered free of
charge to Brevard County residents.

Brevard County Parks and Recreation is hosting a Fall Festival in North Brevard beginning at

When my last offspring graduated from high
school and joined his siblings by becoming a
decent, respectable member of society I thought
my days of apologizing for them were over.
I should have known better.
At a recent family get-together the subject
turned to previously secret tales of Halloweens
past and I was once again amazed at my darlings’
ability to pull off the most outrageous stunts
without my knowledge. My mouth went agape
when my first born poked her sister and giggled,
“Remember the man who always cracked the
door just enough to shove that bowl of candy
through, and it was always old leftover Christmas
candy, and after you slipped the frog in that bowl
he never opened his door on Halloween again?”
Daughter number 2 (widening her eyes in a
“Shut up, Mom is listening” manner) answered,
“I may or may not have been responsible for a
toad inadvertently landing in a certain bowl, but
you can’t deny kidnapping all the potted plants
from Mrs. Smith’s yard and placing them in
exactly the same position in Mr. Jones’ yard!
Do you realize how hard it was to keep mom
occupied long enough for you to finish?”
Heir number 3 chimed in with, “You think
that was hard, I’m the one who had to convince
her you two were mature enough to take the little
kids out by yourself the year mom was so sick
she almost cancelled Trick or Treating!”
Not even noticing my incredulous stare she
continued, “It was a good idea to dress them up
in overlapping costumes so we could shed one,
then come back and hit the same houses twice.
But you should have asked Roy if he liked wearing that nightgown. We could have avoided him
screaming so loud when we tried to take it off that
a police officer stopped to see if we were OK.”
While my darlings lost themselves in convulsive laughter I looked to Roy for denial. There
wasn’t any. Being the baby and the only boy
with 4 sisters, wearing a nightgown was a form
of self defense.
I have a feeling I will be adding a therapist
to my list of people I will be apologizing to. I’m
just not sure if it will be his or mine.

SN Alexis Wilmot Promoted
Navy Seaman Alexis R. Wilmot, daughter of
Robert D. Wilmot of Colorado Springs, CO. and
Terri L. Wilmot of Cocoa, FL., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Great Lakes,
IL and was recently promoted to her current rank
upon graduation for outstanding performance
during all phases of the training cycle. Training
which included classroom study and practical
instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and
aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on
physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle
Stations." This exercise gives recruits the skills
and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.
"Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the
basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication,
teamwork and endurance in each recruit through
the practical application of basic Navy skills and
the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly "Navy" flavor was designed
to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

2014 PSJ Christmas Parade
Dear Neighbor,
This letter is to invite your organization to participate in the 25thAnnual Port
St. John Christmas parade. The parade
will take place on December 20, 2014, 11 AM, in
Port St. John. The parade route will be east along
Fay Blvd. from Waterloo Ave. to Carole Ave. We
are hoping for 80-90 entries again this year. Please
send your entry in early.
The theme of this year’s parade will be “Magic
of Christmas.” Floats and decorations should be
planned toward the theme. All entries will be judged
and plaques awarded. Categories include Theme,
Christmas Spirit, Creativity, Marching Musical and
Marching Non-Musical.
Floats should be no more than 17’ high to clear
power lines, and be 8’ wide or less to travel to and
from the staging area. They can be wider on the
parade route. Marching groups should plan for a
20’ wide roadway.
For everyone’s safety, CANDY MAY NOT
BE THROWN FROM THE FLOATS AND
VEHICLES. Thrown candy ricochets and small
children chase it into the street where they might
be hit by the next vehicle. If you want to hand out
candy, please be sure to have walkers accompany
your float.
There is a $30 charge for any float or vehicle
which advertises a business. The fee does not go up
if there are multiple businesses on the same float.
Nonprofit community support groups and public
schools are $15, unless they display banners and
logos for a business on their float or vehicle(s).

Safe Boating Course
The local Coast Guard Auxiliary unit in Cocoa
will offer a safe boating course to the boating
public on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Lee
Wenner Park in Cocoa, starting at 8:00 am. The
course will cover state and federal boating laws,
equipment, aids to navigation and practical exercises in knot tying and line handling.
The course meets all requirements for boat
insurance discounts. Completion of the course
will qualify the participants for the Florida Safe
Boating identification card. Free boat safety inspections will be offered.

October. Woody's was well known for their good
food when they were in Rockledge. Of course the
one thing that I remember was their delicious pies
and desserts. Their pies were humongous and to
die for. I wish them much success.
Looking ahead to December, mark your calendar for Thursday, December 11th. We will have
our Holiday/Christmas Pot Luck and Crazy Gift
Exchange. We will provide the meat and drinks
and all you have to do is bring a side dish to share.

ALL ABOARD OR NOT ALL ABOARD
FLORIDA..... This leviathan of big money and
commerce is running full steam ahead in spite
of growing opposition and safety concerns. All
Aboard Florida seems to be turning a deaf ear to
the criticisms being voiced by many civic groups,
railway experts and government agencies. Their
attitude seems to be, say what you want because
we are going to do what we (All Aboard Florida)
want to do anyway. They have started a television add campaign and now have announced
plans to extend service north to Jacksonville
and southwest from the Orlando Main Terminal
to Tampa. They have awarded the contract for
the engines and passenger cars to the Siemens
Company. “Our partnership with Siemens is
another tremendous step forward for All Aboard
Florida. We carefully chose Siemens technology
knowing it will set a new industry standard, while
providing the world class amenities our customers will expect from our passenger service,” said
Don Robinson, All Aboard Florida President
and COO. Their manufacturing facility for this
type of work is located in California. It is my
understanding that AAF cannot begin construction on the airport to Cocoa leg until the Federal
Rail Commission releases their Environmental
Impact Statement for that section of rail. The
study was supposed to be released in June but as
of this writing, it seems to be on indefinite hold
for some reason. Even with all this delay, AAF is
still saying that they will have trains in service in
2016. We will just have to wait and see.
Be sure and be on your guard while driving through Port St. John and the Groves this
Halloween. Our little ghost, goblins and fairy
princesses can pop out of anywhere at any time.

Young Eagles Flight Rally
Merritt Island area young people ages 8-17
will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, October 18th, as Experimental Aircraft
Association (EAA) Chapter 724 hosts a Young
Eagles Flight Rally at Merritt Island Airport.
The rally is part of the EAA Aviation Foundation’s Young Eagles Program, created to get more
young people interested in aviation. Volunteer
EAA pilots had a goal of providing one million

Free airplane rides are just part of the Flight
Rally. The pilots hope to build one-on-one relationships between pilots and young people, giving a new generation a chance to learn more about
possibilities that exist in the world of aviation.
Pilots at the event will also explain more
about their airplanes, allowing young people
to discover how airplanes work and how pilots
ensure safety before every flight. All pilots and
planes are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Following the flight, each young person will
receive a certificate making him or her an official
Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered
into the “World’s Largest Logbook”, which is
on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure
Museum in Oshkosh, WI. The Logbook is also
accessible on the internet at www.youngeagles.
org.
Young people and their parents attending the
flight rally on October 18th, 2014 are asked to
come to the large hangar at the end of Airport
Road (2 miles south of SR 520 on S. Courtney
Parkway). Registration will start at 8:30 am and
will close at noon. Flights will begin at 9:00 am.
A parent or guardian must sign a permission
form for each young person. No reservations are
required or accepted. Young Eagles will fly in
First Come, First Flown order. Flights will last
approximately 20 minutes.

As you may or may not know, our good friend
Conley Jordan has had his hip replaced. He did
well in surgery and is recovering at The Health
Center of Merritt Island. Conley wanted to thank
everyone for all the cards and calls wishing him
well and a speedy recovery. Hopefully he will be
home by the time this article comes out, but if
you would like to send him a card, you can mail

a great friend and always willing to help anyone
in a time of need. I look forward to him getting
out and about again very soon.
We are going to try something a little different
at this month's CGHI meeting. We will have a
very short business meeting followed by some
fellowship. We are requesting that you bring a
neighbor or friend to come out and see what
CGHI is all about. All that we ask is that you
bring something to munch on and we will provide coffee and tea. Now would be the time to
bring up anything that you feel the association
needs to answer or address. We don't always
have all the answers but we usually know who
to call that could be of some assistance. If you
have not yet paid your $15.00 dues, this will be
a great time to take care of that.
We will be selling pecans again this year and
will probably begin the sale in early November. Hopefully we will be at our regular spot
in front of Jabbers Sports Bar on Grissom. We
