And of course, a BIG THANK YOU to the
Christmas Parade Committee, many of whom
miss the parade every year working at staging
to put the parade together. We welcome new
members Karen Steuer, Rhonda Rockhill, Jobie
Waltman, Jeremy Higginbotham, Michael Alaura
and Jen Wyman. I don’t think we told them how
much controlled chaos there would actually be,
but they handled it all well. You’re AWESOME!
The weather was absolutely perfect for the
25th annual Port St. John Christmas parade. We
had some of the largest entries ever in Port St.
John. The Space Coast Vipers Marching Band,
always a favorite of the crowd, rocked the
whole mile and the cheerleaders from both the
Middle School and the High School danced and
performed to the music. Not to be outdone, the
Rockets cheerleaders were flying through the air

Good Day! by Maureen Rupe
Good Day,
Florida Legislature and the Water and
Land Conservation Initiative
The initiative Amendment 1 - Water and
Land Conservation - through dedication, a lot
of hard work and concern for the environment,
was brought about due to the Florida Legislature
shifting money away from Florida Forever and
other conservation efforts for a number of years.
Amendment 1 passed with 74.96%. There were
4,238,739 for the amendment, and 1,415,924
against. As far as I am concerned, and I assume
every other voter, this was a clear mandate to
our Florida Legislature. What does the “Will of
the People” mean? Can we trust that an overwhelming majority at the polls by the people,
where the intent was understood by all, have the
intent changed by the legislature when they don’t
agree with the vote?
According to a November 23, 2014 story by
Mary Ellen Klas of the Miami Herald Tallahassee
Bureau titled, “Legislators will decide whether
to limit impact of environmental initiative,”
there are legislators who are making plans to
go around the will of the people. “…Sen. David
Simmons, R-Maitland, Gardiner’s point man on
the issue, said he believes the amendment is so
broadly written it gives lawmakers the ability
to replace money now spent on existing environmental programs with the doc stamp money.
“I believe that the wording of the constitutional
amendment gives the Legislature broad authority
to deal with it — and that includes transferring
those programs that are general revenue over to
the doc stamps,’’ he said. “We are not going to
play shell games.”
Computer

The article indicated House Speaker Steve
Crisafulli, a Merritt Island Republican, wants
to increase funding for water and land protection, but the article indicated he also wants to
do it slowly so it prevents increasing doc stamp
revenues. It stated his staff was reorganizing
environmental program funding, but it seemed
awfully close to what Senator Simmons was indicating of forcing the Water and Conservation
Initiative to pick up the tabs of any other state
environmental programs.
Clay Henderson, an Orlando lawyer and one
of the amendment’s authors, couldn’t understand
how the legislature can ignore the will of the
people, especially while referring to the vote
results. “What part of 75 percent do they not
understand?” It almost sounds like the Senate and
House plans to put all the environmental projects
into one pile and have them all be funded by the
Water and Land Conservation Initiative.
Eric Draper of Florida Audubon stated in the
story, “If there’s just one pot of money and the
Legislature starts handing the money out in the
Appropriations Act, it becomes a lobbyist-driven
process.”
In a December 7th article in Palm Beach Post
titled, “Conservation amendment up to lawmakers now; environmentalists worried,” the article
stated: Although environmentalists and their
attorneys drafted the ballot measure, Crisafulli
pointed out, “Now it’s up to us to interpret the
intent.” He seems to be getting the various stages
of government mixed up, as it has always been
the judicial system that “interprets” laws. The
legislature makes laws, except where they have
given some rights like the voters in this case.
He’s wrong unless the legislature has corrupted

the Florida Judicial System, too. The same article
has Crisafulli stating he’s going to do all sorts
of things with the funds to override the initiative’s intent. “House Speaker Steve Crisafulli,
R-Merritt Island, said city water and sewer projects – basic repair, maintenance and expansion
work that lawmakers spent $88.5 million on this
year – could be among those aided by the Water
and Land Legacy campaign dollars. “It fits into
the purview of the intent of the amendment, it
certainly does,” Crisafulli said.
I’ve read the wording of the amendment
again and the only way the legislature could
possibly expand the intent would be to delete or
move around the punctuation. The amendment
clearly states at the beginning that the amendment is “to acquire, restore, improve and manage
conservation lands.” The legislature, including
our own Representative Crisafulli, seems to be
trying to change the intent by using the descriptors associated with the acquisition, restoration,
improvement and management of these lands.
The descriptors state these conservation lands
can include “lands including wetlands and forests; fish and wildlife habitat; lands protecting
water resources and drinking sources, including
the Everglades, and the water quality of rivers,
lakes and streams; beaches and shores; outdoor
recreational lands; working farms and ranches;
and historic or geologic sites…”
It doesn’t say you can use it for anything that
is tied to water quality, just conservation lands
like buying lands around our rivers and springs
that can improve water quality. The first course
of action for our legislature should be a refresher
course in English grammar, as they seem to have
forgotten the purpose of a comma or semicolon.

I’m tired of our legislators acting like they
“care” about the environment and at the same
time trying to figure out how to spend less on
the issue. What nerve! I doubt that there is one
legislator in either the House or Senate that can
say they received 75% of the vote like Amendment 1. They should just do what the people
mandated instead of trying to figure out ways to
get around it.

Brevard County Building Report
November was a good month, even though
single family home permits building activity
dropped from the previous month. Even though
building activity dropped from October, November’s single family home permits issued were still
more than any November’s count since before
2008. Construction values dropped from October’s $45 million report to just over $38 million,
but that seemed consistent of what happens every
year. November 2014 was still over 33 percent
higher than 2013 and was the strongest year
since 2008 where the table values started. The
total number of permits issued was also stronger
than any previous year since records in the table
started in 2008.

Port St. John Homeowner’s Association
As I was going through some old papers, I
found a letter from Randy Rodriguez (then Sec-
retary for the Port St John Homeowner’s Association to Jean Durnil, who was a Board member of
the Association. It was dated October 22, 1990.
As we start a New Year, it is also good to
remember the folks who made Port St. John the
community it is today. I’m printing the letter
(we didn’t have emails back then) to show you
the comradeship the association brought to the
community.
Dear Jean,
This is a terribly official letter from all of us
on the Board on the matter of your most recent
performance. After all, you are a highly respected
Board member of long standing. Your past performance of your duties has been nothing less than
admirable, so we feel it is necessary to point a
few things out to you.
1) As a member of the Safety Committee,
you should know that any condition that sends
you to the hospital is UNSAFE. Doctors are not
to be trusted because you never see them in a

Also, you left Bob Rupe with no adult supervision. That’s Real scary.
2) We thought you might be using a Telephone Committee trick to acquire some free
phone time from the hospital. We appreciate your
commitment to duty, Jean, but we need you back
here. We’re still working on Maureen’s English!
3) Your absence is also causing a Beautification Committee problem because the meetings
just don’t look the same without you.
As you can see, this is a VERY serious problem. We voted to settle out of court if you are
willing to accept our fondest wishes for a speedy
recovery, and the return of our charming smile.
We all miss you and hope to see you back as soon

The Officers and Board changed over the
years but they all were dedicated to the community and spent many hours at county and state
meetings to make Port St. John the great place to
live that it is today. Also thanks to all the residents
at that time, many no longer with us, who supported the Homeowner’s Association and were
dedicated to Port St. John like the PSJ AARP
and the PSJ Seniors. Thank you all, especially
County Commissioner Truman Scarborough,
without whose support we would not have been
able to accomplish many of our goals.
Some of the things brought about by the Port
St. John Home Owners Association were: Opening of Grissom Parkway both north and south, (it
was called Tulsa Blvd. prior to that), the Port St.
John Library, Fire Station, Fay Lake Wilderness
Park, PSJ Community Center, Community Police
Unit, Nichol Park, Port St. John Parkway, fourlane of Fay Blvd, and paving of King’s Highway,
(yes, it was dirt!).
On the 18th I was invited to a meeting, with
East Coast Industries and attorneys. An Alternative Fueling facility [Natural Gas] is being
planned north of OUC. I will bring details in
February, but today is the last day for Happenings inputs; something about a parade to conduct.
I hope you have a very Happy New Year!
Cheerio,
Maureen

A cannibal went to the tribe's witch doctor.
"Doc, I've been feeling lousy lately."
"Hmmm," replied the witch doctor. "Let's
review your diet. Are you eating man or animal?"
"Man, doc. We're eating those Catholic missionaries we caught last week."
"Okay, tell me how you cook them."
"Same way as always, doc. We boil them up

"Hmmmm," pondered the witch doctor. "Tell
me more about these Catholic missionaries."
"Well, funny thing, doc. They all look alike!
They're short, fat, wear long robes, sandals, rope

Rose’s Room
For more January firsts than I can remember I
have woken with firm resolve to cure all the ills
that I have allowed to permeate my life. Excesses
of all sorts – relationships, jobs and more, were
all fair game in my firm quest to make my world
a better place.
Discovering that I am my own worst enemy
pertaining to limits of any kind, I have decided
this year will be different. I am making a list of
‘Non-Resolutions’ and would like to share a few
with you. Please feel free to join me where applicable and share with me any that you are doing
this year or have benefitted from in the past.
I resolve not to drive to work with my head so
full of reports and deadlines that I don’t pull off
the road to stand in awe and thank the Big Guy
for the panoramic wonder of a whole sky filled
with pinks, blues and oranges showing His promise of another day. And not to try to convince the
nice officer that if the lawmakers would have
seen this sunrise they would surely have made a
‘Sunrise watching lane’ instead of an ‘Emergency
lane’ and I was just ahead of my time.
I resolve not to be so rushed that I don’t take
the time to share God’s wonder with a granddaughter serving our country in a cold, bleak part
of the U.S. through the wondrous technology of
the phone thing that my kids insisted I learn how
to use. And not to get upset when she calls me
for the fourth time to tell me I sent her another
picture of my foot.
I resolve not to keep an eye on my favorite TV
show when a grandchild goes out of her way to
come and see her Grammy and Poppi after night
school, but to turn the blasted idiot box off and
play fifties music while we stir up ginger bread
because it makes her laugh. And try to come up
with a better explanation of Love Potion Number
Nine.
I resolve not to dodge but to answer the phone
cheerfully, listen intently and find comforting
words every time a friend calls, even though I
know the call will result in twenty minutes of
her bemoaning her life since she broke up with a
boyfriend. And NEVER to utter the words, “I told
you not to go out with a guy that has 9 hamsters
all named Bootsy!”
I resolve not to speed up so I can get past the
kitten that runs to meet me as I power walk past
her house, but to stop and enjoy a tiny soul that
only wants a moment of attention. But refrain
from sitting in the middle of the sidewalk and
playing with her until it’s too dark to continue
my walk.
I resolve to stop obsessing over the numbers
on my scale and just concentrate on getting more
exercise, eating healthier and cutting my sugar
intake. I will begin this moment! …Or perhaps
after the last of the leftover pie is gone (I can’t be
expected to throw it away... can I ?) And there’s a
whole tin of sugar cookies baked by my favorite
little people… and all those candy canes… This
one may be a tad difficult…
I pray everyone reading this and their families
have a blessed and healthy new year!
~ Rose Padrick

MONTHLY TAX UPDATE
I want to take a moment and express my
gratitude for your interest in reading my articles.
I hope the information provided is something of
interest to you and I look forward to continuing
this in the future. With that, it is time to say goodbye to 2014 and start looking forward to 2015.
As the New Year has arrived, everyone should
take a few minutes to make sure they have all of
their paperwork in order for the upcoming income tax filing season. This is the time to gather
the pertinent information needed to prepare your
tax return. Make sure your employer has your
correct address. Especially if you have moved
during the year, or you may have changed it with
your current employer, but failed to inform your
former employer(s) and this means you need to
contact them.
Have you had a event change in your life, such
as marriage, birth of a child or a child starting
college? You may have had to step in and take
care of a loved one with medical issues and
needed full time care. All these are important
to your tax preparation. January is the perfect
month to sit down and review the previous year
changes to get yourself prepared for preparing
your income tax return.
Of course, everyone starts anticipating when
they will get their W2’s and when they expect to
receive their refund. Most employers have the
W2’s available the last week of the month. Officially, they have until January 31st to have them
prepared and mailed out. It just seems natural to
take the next couple of weeks and make sure you
will have all the documents required to have your
return prepared.
Okay, now let’s pick it up a little bit and discuss credits. There are two types of credits beneficial to the everyday taxpayer; refundable and
nonrefundable. The nonrefundable will reduce
the amount of tax owed on taxable income. The
most widely used ones are the Child and Dependent Care, Education, Retirement and Child
Tax credits. Whereas, the refundable credits may
provide additional tax refund and the most popular ones are the Earned Income, the American
Opportunity Education and the Child Tax credit.
Now, let’s briefly look at each one. The Child
and Dependent Care Credit provides a credit for
the care of your child younger than 14 years old
or a handicapped individual who is your dependent. The Education credit involves the American Opportunity Education Credit, the Lifetime
Learning Credit, or the Tuition and Fees Deduction (if extended by Congress for 2014), provides
a credit or deduction for you, your spouse, or
dependent to attend an accredited college course.
The Retirement Savings Contribution Credit
provides for a credit when you contribute to any
type of retirement arrangement. The Child Tax
Credit provides for a reduction of taxes or additional refund if you have dependent children
younger than 17 years of age. And, the Earned
Income Tax Credit provides additional refund if
your earned income and/or adjusted gross income
falls within credit parameters.
Each of these credits could be applicable to
your situation. A detailed reviewed of each is in
order when preparing your tax return and a tax
professional may be useful. If you have someone help you with your taxes, make sure they
are competent. Remember, you are ultimately
responsible for the return, not your preparer.
This is a very brief overview. For details and
specific assistance in applying the general information in this article, call us at your earliest convenience or contact your tax advisor. Provided by

Elderly
Best Pets of Brevard
Law of Close Encounters –
While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my
4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She
was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers
and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a
pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced
myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she
merely turned and whispered, “The tooth fairy
will never believe this!”
The Central Brevard Humane Society's 2015
"Best Pets of Brevard" Calendar is now available and they are only $10.00 each. Gracing the
cover is Gourd and he is “striking a pose” for the
camera. Other features of the calendar include
the “In Loving Memory” of pets that have passed
away, Honorable Mentions, Paws of Distinction
and special “money saving” coupons.
Copies can be purchased at the Humane Society at 1020 Cox Road in Cocoa; any of their (4)
Molly Mutt Thrift Shops in Melbourne, Merritt
Island, Palm Bay & Rockledge; their Merritt
Island Adoption Center; local veterinary offices; and online at brevardhumanesociety.com.
Become a Humane Society Member and save
$5.00 off the purchase of a calendar.
All proceeds from the sales of these calendars
will help to raise awareness and financial support
for the "unwanted and abandoned" pets that visit
their Adoption Centers in Cocoa and Merritt
Island each year, who need a safe and loving
"forever" home.

The probability of meeting someone you

with someone you don't want to be seen with.
Law of the Result –
When you try to prove to someone that a
machine won't work, IT WILL!!!
Law of Biomechanics –
The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach.
Law of the Theater
Sport Arena - At any event, the people whose
seats are furthest from the aisle always arrive
last. They are the ones who will leave their seats
several times to go for food, beer or the toilet
and who leave early before the end of the performance or the game is over. The folks in the
aisle seats come early, never move once, have
long gangly legs or big bellies and stay to the
bitter end of the performance. The aisle people
also are very surly folk.
The Coffee Law –
As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee,
your boss will ask you to do something which
will last until the coffee is cold.

Christmas Street Lights
I was more than a little surprised this year
to receive several phone calls and emails about
the absence of the Christmas lights along Fay
Blvd. this year. Some were asking and worried,
several were demanding an explanation. Perhaps
the most puzzling item is the fact that I truly was
surprised. Why, you ask?
Three years ago I published an article from
the group who has taken the responsibility each
year since they first appeared to put them up, take
them down, store them, repair them and when
needed, buy parts for them. They also purchased
the special poles that support them and pay for
any repairs or alterations needed for them. That
sounds odd, but just last year they had to pay to
move the support wires on one pole because a
neighbor complained. It wasn’t cheap.
Two years ago they sent another input asking
for help to offset the expenses and carry on the
tradition. I mailed 12,000 issues to home in PSJ.
Less than 5 responded.
Last year they took the bills on the chin and
once again, appealed to the community for help.
The wiring in the lights was over a decade old.
The hangers were, too. The panels needed painting. It would have been a substantial bill. Again,
less than 10 responded.
You can probably guess what the fate of the
lights was. It’s similar to what would have happened to Tinker Bell if no one had clapped.
It seems that over the years many people have
moved here who think there is a government here
that provides things. It’s never been that way in
PSJ. Fireworks, parade, youth leagues, women’s
softball... all of them happened because residents
here did the work to create them, raised the
money for them, got the permits, the materials
and the volunteers to make them happen. When
we stop helping to raise the money, there is no
Mayor needing votes to beg or magic pot of
money, no army of robots to do the work.
Look for more events in PSJ to die of apathy
if we don’t get out and support them. It won’t be
any government that saves them.
Fitness is not about being better than
someone else...
It's about being better than you used
to be.

A group of 15 year old boys discussed where
they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they
would meet at the McDonald's next to Captain
Jack's Seafood Grille because they only had six
dollars among them, they could ride their bikes
there and Jennie Webster, that cute girl in Social
Studies, lives on the same street and they might
see her.
Ten years later, the group of now 25 year
old guys discussed where they should meet for
dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the beer was
cheap, the bar had free snacks, the house band
was good, there was no cover charge and there
were lot of cute girls.
Ten years later, at 35 years of age, the group
once again discussed where they should meet
for dinner. It was decided they would meet at
Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the booze
was good, it was near their gym and, if they went
late enough, there wouldn't be too many whiny
little kids.
Ten years later, at 45, the group once again
discussed where they should meet for dinner. It
I’ve sure gotten old!
I’ve had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and
diabetes I’m half blind, can’t hear anything
quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded and subject

was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's
Seafood Grille because the martinis were big and
the waitresses wore tight pants.
Ten years later, now 55, the group once again
discussed where they should meet for dinner. It
was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's
Seafood Grille because the prices were reasonable, they have a nice wine list and fish is good
for your cholesterol.
Ten years later, at 65 years of age, the group
once again discussed where they should meet for
dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain
Jack's Seafood Grille because the lighting was
good and they have an early bird special.
Ten years later, at 75 years of age, the group
once again discussed where they should meet for
dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain
Jack's Seafood Grille because the food was not
too spicy, and the restaurant was handicapped
accessible.
Ten years later, at 85 years of age, the group
once again discussed where they should meet
for dinner. It was agreed they would try Captain
Jack's Seafood Grille since they had never been
there before.

New Businesses, New Fun!
Looking around Port St. John, we have had a great deal
of growth in our business community lately. If you haven’t
been able to keep up with all the new signs while you’ve
been busy Christmas shopping, (or working overtime to
pay for the presents!), here are a few that have opened in
the last few months or perhaps even the past few weeks.
Kelly’s BBQ is now open on US 1. Kelly has been
competing in BBQ competitions for a while, but now you
don’t have to chase around the state.
Port St. Java has brought back the old-fashioned coffee
shop in a modern format to Fay Plaza, across from the
ball fields. Lots of good coffee and tea, a place to relax
and some delicious treats if you’re hungry.
There’s also a new SUBWAY just down the sidewalk
with all the favorite subs, plus breakfast and plenty of
room to sit down and enjoy.
Not enough? Domino’s Pizza has expanded to add
seating while you enjoy your pizza or wings.
Just looking for a snack? Chippie’s Frozen Yogurt is
conveniently down the sidewalk from all 3 of them. Dinner and dessert with a short walk to take away the guilt.
I’m not sure how much guilt is erased by a 50 foot walk,
but I’m trying to help you get dessert!
Woody’s BBQ is now open on US1 south of PSJ, in
the building best remembered as Corky Bell’s. I haven’t
made it there yet, but it’s BBQ. I will.
All Air and Heat has moved into a new location on
Curtis Blvd. and Taylor Plumbing is right next to them.
That’s two long-time PSJ residents now in a very convenient location when you need repairs.
Hair care customers of PSJ resident Karen Steuer will
be happy to know that her healing is doing much, much
better and she’s back to taking care of hair with the same
class, sass and talent that made you seek her before. See
her ad in this issue.
Looking For New Chair for Thunder
Over the Indian River
The 2014 coordinator for Thunder Over the Indian River,
the fireworks show to Port St. John, has retired and we stand
to lose the event unless we find a new group or person to
create the event. We’ve had the last 14 years with dedicated
friends in Thunder Over the Indian River. We’ve worn out a
lot of good people along the way. Our children who watched
the Community Blast shows now bring their own children out
to see the fireworks. If you or someone you know would like
to carry the event forward, please contact Tia by email at [email protected] to get more
information. Dragonworks, the fireworks contractor is still available.

Port St. John Library News
January 2015
Thank you to everyone who joined us in
December for all of our festivities. We had a
fabulous pancake breakfast with Mrs. Claus
on December 6th and our participants wrote
letters to Santa and made beautiful ornaments
to decorate the tree in the lobby.
The library would like to extend a big, warm
bear hug of a thank you to the Friends of the
Library group for an activity-filled December.
The Friends also threw a generous holiday
party on December 9th for all the library staff,
Friends of the Library and Library Advisory
Board members. We sure feel appreciated!
Thank You!
If anyone is interested in joining the Friends
of the Library, membership forms are available
at the library Circulation Desk. The group has
a lot of exciting things planned for 2015 and
welcomes new members. The next Friends of
the Library membership meeting is Wednesday,
January 28th at 5:30 p.m. Please come if you
are interested in finding out more about the
group.
Also, in case you were not aware, the ongoing Book Sale that benefits the Friends of the
Library is back up and running. Look for the
sign on the back wall under the windows as
you walk in the library.
First up in 2015, just in time for Valentine’s
Day, is a Melt & Pour Soap Making Class on
Saturday, January 31st from 11 am – 1 p.m.
Have a look at the beautiful soap creations in
the library lobby display case throughout the
month of January. Pamela Ferraro will teach
you the basics of beginner soap making in this
two-hour workshop. Pre-registration is required
and space is limited to ten participants. There
is a $5 materials fee for the class.
Also in time for Valentine’s Day is Chef
Warren’s Table for Two cooking demonstration. Chef Warren will be here showcasing
recipes from his two Table for Two cookbooks
and sharing samples of his creations from the
Cooking Stage. His blend of humor and cooking skills has gotten rave reviews. The cooking demonstration will be held on Thursday,
February 12, 2015 at 6 p.m. Free tickets must
be picked up in advance at the library begin-
ning February 2, 2015. For more information,
call 321-633-1867 or visit http://www.tablefortwocookbooks.com/
The display cabinet in the lobby is open
for interested parties to showcase collections,
information or art of a cultural, recreational
and educational nature. Please call Phyllis at
321-633-1867 if you are interested in having a
month-long display in the library lobby.
One last thing; the library is in need of a
wheelchair donation for patrons with disabilities. We would welcome a donation of a used
wheelchair as a courtesy to our patrons who
may need one.
Thank You and Happy New Year!

Florida Master Naturalist
Training
Learning more about Florida’s natural environment now is possible through the Florida
Master Naturalist Program (FMNP), an environmental education extension program offered
in partnership with the University of FloridaInstitute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UFIFAS) and participating organizations throughout
the state. The FMNP both informs and prepares
participants to share information about Florida’s
natural world and environmental history.
The upcoming class is the Upland Habitats
Module and will be available at Riverwalk-A
Family Park, 5355 U.S. Highway 1, Rockledge.
Completion of the 40-hour program results in
registration in the UF-IFAS Master Naturalist
Program database as a FMNP Upland Habitats
Naturalist. Additional modules will be available
in the future, including Freshwater Wetlands and
Coastal Systems.
The FMNP is not a degree-seeking program.
The program is appropriate for both the novice
and the highly skilled environmental profes-
sional.
Certified FMNP Provider: Brandon Smith
will be the principal instructor. Smith has been
teaching environmental education for Brevard
County Parks and Recreation for over six years
and now oversees Riverwalk-A Family Park, a
6.37-acre nature preserve and center, located at
5355 US Hwy 1 in Rockledge. For more information on this and other programs, call the nature
center at (321) 433-4490 or email riverwalk@
brevardparks.com.
Course Dates: Classes run on select Saturdays,
8 a.m. to 5 p.m., from Jan. 10 to Feb. 28. Registration closes Jan. 5. Refer to FMNP Web site,
www.MasterNaturalist.org, and click on “Course
Offerings” for specific class dates and times.
Registration: Available online by visiting
www.MasterNaturalist.org and clicking on the
“Course Offerings” link.
Cost: $225, which includes 40 contact hours
of instruction, a comprehensive student reference
workbook, and upon completion, registration in
the UF FMNP database as an Upland Habitats
Naturalist. A UF-IFAS certificate of achievement,
embroidered FMNP patch, and FMNP Coastal
lapel pin also will be provided at completion.
Certified teachers attending the course may be
able to receive 40 hours of in-service credit.
Program: Training for the Upland Habitats
Module includes classroom instruction, field
trips, and practical interpretive experience related to the general ecology, habitats, vegetation
types, wildlife and conservation issues of Upland
Habitats in Florida, which include prairie, scrub,
forests, rangeland and urban green space. In addition, the program develops naturalist interpretation skills and discusses environmental ethics.
Target Audience: Volunteers and staff members of nature centers, preserves, sanctuaries
and other environmental education facilities.
Ecotourism operators and guides, teachers seeking opportunities for environmental educational
contact hours and anyone who has an enthusiastic
interest in learning more about Florida’s environment is encouraged to participate.
For more information about the Upland
Habitats Module training or about the FMNP in
general, contact the individuals listed above or
log on to the official FMNP Web site at www.

Cocoa Dedicates Fiske Blvd. as
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Memorial Highway
Cocoa City Council unveiled signs at Tuesday’s Council meeting that dedicate the portion
of Fiske Blvd. located inside Cocoa City limits
as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
Highway. The Senate passed Bill 820 Section 57
that designated this Cocoa roadway as of July 1,
2014. Tuesday was chosen to unveil the signs as
it was the 50th anniversary of Dr. King receiving
the Nobel Peace Prize.
Cocoa City Council has been pushing for
years to dedicate a roadway within the City to
the civil rights leader and activist. Deputy Mayor
Clarence Whipple, Jr. suggested Fiske Blvd. as
the chosen roadway due to its alignment with
other significant streets such as Rosa L. Jones,
Stone St., Barbara Jenkins St. and Blake Ave., all
named for local civil rights activists.
The request was recently brought up by
resident Ruth Collins who attended a Cocoa City
Council meeting in 2012 requesting that Council
once again revisit this topic. Other streets such
as Clearlake Rd. and SR 524 were mentioned as
possible locations for this dedication. Fiske Blvd.
was unanimously chosen by Council in November of 2013 as the location for this designation.

this size and magnitude.
December was certainly exciting with World
News. The crashing of the Russian monetary
system has many folks scurrying around looking
for the high ground, if there is any. Looks like
we are headed into another round of Cold War.
The United States is reestablishing diplomatic
relations with Cuba after fifty plus years of no
relations at all. This one has the Cuban American's split on whether or not to embrace this
change. My wife, Dedei, lived in Cuba up until
Castro started his revolutionary movement. Her
Dad was in the Navy and all dependents had to
be evacuated back to the United States. In fact,
former District 1 Commissioner Truman Scaroborough attended the same elementary school
that Dedei attended. It really is a small world.
All these events, along with others, are setting
the stage for a very interesting 2015.
Dedei and I celebrated our 48th Anniversary
on Christmas Eve. Those are a lot of years to
spend with one person, but if you have been
married for several years, you understand that a
successful marriage is a give and take situation.
Certainly not all giving or all taking ‘cause that
won't work, Bubba. I can't wait to see what the
next 48 years bring. Love you "Big as Space
Babe!"
After reading last month's Happenings, I
went up to Titusville and picked up a copy of
Braddock's Gold by Port St. John resident, Jay
Heavner and I can't wait to start reading it. I will
give you my thoughts in the future after I have
finished.
Santa was able to take a few minutes from
his busy schedule to visit with the children who
showed up for breakfast with Santa at the Country
Cookin’ Diner on U.S. 1 in Port St John. Pancakes
were flying and pictures were being snapped as
Santa chatted with all the girls and boys. If you
missed Santa, stop by the Country Cookin’ Diner
serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is always
home cookin' at its best.
Conley is getting around better but his recovery is going slowly. He was able to come out
and help with the Pecan Sale. Rick Jackson is
still going through some medical challenges, so
I ask for healing prayers and good thoughts to
all who are in need.
Hopefully my schedule will settle down this
month. I have to get back to my honey-do list. It
never seems to get any smaller.
......A Parting Shot From The Cannon.......
* A car is hit an elderly Jewish man. The paramedic says, “Are you comfortable?”
The man says, “I make a good living.”
* I just got back from a pleasure trip. I took
my mother-in-law to the airport.
* I’ve been in love with the same woman for
49 years. If my wife finds out, she’ll kill me!
* Someone stole all my credit cards, but I
won’t be reporting it. The thief spends less than
my wife did.
* We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.
* My wife and I went to a hotel where we got
a waterbed. My wife calls it the Dead Sea.
* My wife and I revisited the hotel where we
spent our wedding night. This time I was the one
who stayed in the bathroom and cried.
* My wife was at the beauty shop for two
hours. That was only for the estimate. She got
a mudpack and looked great for two days. Then
the mud fell off.
* The Doctor gave a man six months to live.
The man couldn’t pay his bill, so the doctor gave
him another six months.
* The Doctor called Mrs. Cohen saying, “Mrs.
Cohen, your check came back.”
Mrs. Cohen replied, “So did my arthritis!”
* A doctor held a stethoscope up to a man’s
chest. The man asks, “Doc, how do I stand?”
The doctor says, “That’s what puzzles me!”
* Patient: “I have a ringing in my ears.”
Doctor: “Don’t answer!”
* A drunk was in front of a judge. The judge
says, “You’ve been brought here for drinking.”
The drunk says, “Okay, let’s get started.
*A man called his mother in Florida . “Mom,
how are you?”
“Not too good,” said the mother. “I’ve been
very weak.”
The son said, “Why are you so weak?”
She said, “Because I haven’t eaten in 38 days.”
The son said, “That’s terrible. Why haven’t
you eaten in 38 days?”
The mother answered, “Because, I didn’t want
my mouth to be full in case you should call.”
* Did you hear about the bum who walked up
to a Jewish mother on the street and said, “Lady
I haven’t eaten in three days.”
“Force yourself,” she replied.
I hope this brought you a little laugh. All the
best for a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Until
next time, Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise.

JANUARY, 2015 - 1/1, NEW YEAR'S DAY
- 1/8, CGHI MEETING AT DISCOVERY
CHURCH - 1/19, MARTIN LUTHER KING
DAY
I hope that all had a wonderful Holiday and
now we move on to greet 2015 - a new year with
high expectations for making new friends and
meeting new challenges head on. I don't know
about you, but I am excited.
CGHI had its December Holiday Dinner
and gift exchange on December 11th. Although
sparsely attended, the food was wonderful and
there were some lovely gifts exchanged. A big
thanks to all who helped this year. The results
were outstanding.
We met and even surpassed our Georgia Pecan

group effort that really paid off. We are rebuilding the Scholarship account and hope to offer it
again in the not too distant future.
If you are not a member of CGHI, I encourage you to consider joining now. The dues are
$15.00 per family and that mainly goes toward
the operation of the association. We are certainly
not the run of the mill homeowner's association.
We are mainly here for the disbursement of
news and information that directly affects the
residents of Canaveral Groves. Currently we
meet on the second Thursday of the month at
Discovery Church on Grissom Pkwy. but we are
looking at moving to a semiannual or quarterly
meeting venue. Please come and join in the
conversation as we prepare for the new year.
Speaking of the new year, the residents of
Blair, Chica and Dalhi streets are getting, if not
already completed, new paved roads. Congratulations to all those residents and hopefully the
county will be able to add a few more each year.
District 1 still has the largest number of unpaved
streets of all the districts.
All Aboard Florida is still moving forward in
spite of growing opposition. I know that this project is supposed to benefit the people of Florida,
but the more we get into it, the more skeptical I
am becoming. There are too many questions still
unanswered and AAF is certainly not forthcoming
with anything specific. The buzz word for the last
few years has been transparency. AAF is still into
smoke and mirrors and that is certainly disheartening, especially when dealing with a company of
