IRS Tax Tip 2014-26, March 5,
2014
discusses
bartering.
Bartering was popular in the
early decades of our country
and some people continue to
use this method to obtain
things they want from others
who may have something of
value to “trade” for the
bartered goods. There is even
an IRS form for reporting bartering. The form is 1099-B.
Bartering is the process of
the trading of one product or
service for another. Often there
is no exchange of cash. Small
businesses sometimes barter to
get products or services they
need. For example, a plumber
might trade plumbing work
with a dentist for dental services.
If you barter, you should
know that the value of products
or services from bartering is
taxable income.
Here are four facts about
bartering:
1.Barter exchanges. A barter
exchange is an organized marketplace where members barter
products or services. Some
exchanges operate out of an
office and others over the
Internet. All barter exchanges
are required to issue Form 1099B, Proceeds from Broker and
Barter Exchange Transactions.
The exchange must give a copy
of the form to its members who
barter and file a copy with the
IRS.
2.Bartering income. Barter
and trade dollars are the same
as real dollars for tax purposes
and must be reported on a tax
return. Both parties must
report as income the fair market value of the product or service they get.
3.Tax
implications.
Bartering is taxable in the year
it occurs. The tax rules may
vary based on the type of bartering
that
takes
place.
Barterers may owe income
taxes, self-employment taxes,
employment taxes or excise
taxes on their bartering
income.
4.Reporting rules. How you
report bartering on a tax return
varies. If you are in a trade or
business, you normally report
it on Form 1040, Schedule C,
Profit or Loss from Business.
Bartering can prove to be
useful when cash-flow problems
would otherwise prevent a person’s ability to secure needed
goods and/or services. And,
while there is no exchange of
cash or credit, the fair market
value of the goods and/or services that have been exchanged
are taxable to both parties and
must be claimed as income on
an individual or business’s
income tax return. How do you
determine the value of the
exchange? The fair market
value of the item surrendered
for the item received will determine the value. If I prepare a
tax return for you and you provide computer services for me,
my usual charge for the
tax return will determine
my barter value. Your value
will be determined by your
computer work value. Of
course, in a business, if a
barter exchange occurs for
something that would ordinarily require cash payment, the
offset to the income is the value
of the service or goods provided.
When considering record
keeping requirements, barter
and trade transactions should
be treated just like any other
financial
transaction
or
exchange. Original cost of
goods being bartered or traded,
transaction dates, fair market
value at the time of the transaction, and other pertinent
details should be recorded to
assist in the preparation of
your income tax return and
held for a period of three years
in accordance with other documents and receipts which are
used to substantiate income
and expenses. Are you surprised that barter is taxable?
Most people are.

“Coffee and Classics,” conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero, as it opened its season for the
mid-morning concert series.

The Nashville Symphony
continues to offer music-enthusiasts flexibility with its annual
“Coffee and Classics,” midmorning concert series. The
began on Friday, October 3,
with Rachmaninoff’s Second,
directed
by
Giancarlo
Guerrero, in the acousticalmasterpiece,
Schermerhorn
Symphony Center’s Laura
Turner Hall.
“Each Coffee and Classics
concert features the full
Nashville Symphony orchestra,
generally conducted by Music
Director Giancarlo Guerrero,
though outside, guest conductors do appear from time to
time,” said Dave Felipe.
Coffee and Classics will also
feature Dvorak’s Beloved “New
World,” with Lawrence Foster
Conducting in February. In
April, Guerrero will be conducting Beethoven’s Symphony
No. 1. And lastly, Berlioz
“Symphanie Fantastique” will
be conducted in May.
Each performance will be an
abridged version of the evening
concert, lasting roughly 90 minutes, and includes complimentary coffee and pastries by
Chef’s Market pre-admission.
Tickets for the series range
from $28 to $50, depending on
the seat.
The concert is light-hearted
in nature, with the musicians
dressed more casually; presenting the concert in a new way
that may connect more to the
audience. Guerrero, the Music
Director, adds another interesting layer by telling stories
about the composer and the
music, such as Rachmaninoff’s
last concert being at the
University of Tennessee in
1943.
“As part of the performance,
conductor Giancarlo Guerrero
gives attendees background
information and interesting
facts about the composer and
the piece of music being showcased, making Coffee and
Classics concerts a more interactive experience than usual
evening performances,” said
Felipe.

After 125 years, Ladiesʼ Hermitage
Assoc. will change the groupʼs name
After 125 years, the Ladies’
Hermitage Association is getting a new name, a national
board of trustees and a new
focus on America’s seventh president, Andrew Jackson.
The Association will now be
called the Andrew Jackson
Foundation and will add to the
board nationally known figures
like National Public Radio journalist Mara Liasson and two
Pulitzer Prize winners, historian Jon Meacham and Charles
Overby, former CEO of the
Freedom Forum and the
Newseum, and CedarStone Bank
President Bob McDonald.
The changes to its name and
board composition are part of a
multiyear plan that will refocus
attention and debate on Jackson
and his presidency, on his relevance to the 21st century, and on
the historic site he called home,
The Hermitage.
“Like Mount Vernon and
Monticello, The Hermitage is a
national treasure,” said Debby
Patterson Koch, board regent.
“Andrew Jackson’s presidency
came at a pivotal time for a
young America. We are developing new ways to explore his life
and
presidency
at
The
Hermitage and in the historical
discussion.”
“Andrew Jackson is one of
our most important and least
understood presidents,” said Jon
Meacham.
“He
inspired
Abraham Lincoln, and Harry
Truman considered him one of
the four most important presidents in the history of our
nation. I am looking forward to
being part of the Foundation
and the effort to conduct a new
national discussion on Jackson.”
The Hermitage CEO, Howard
Kittell, says the expansion to a
national board of directors is
one of the first steps toward a
new focus on Jackson and the
facility.
“Andrew Jackson’s presidency was a watershed in the making of America,” Kittell said.
“Any study of the early days of
our country quite naturally
brings one to The Hermitage,
where we have preserved the
facility much as it was in
Jackson’s time. We have many
exciting new plans for 2015, and I
am grateful to have such a distinguished board to help lead us in
the years ahead.”

Under pressure: avoiding buyerʼs
remorse when purchasing a home
House hunting in Nashville
can be described as many
things these days, including
competitive and fast-paced. As
we’ve discussed before, limited
inventory is making a host of
eager home buyers frantic to
bid on a listing before it’s gone.
The hype is exciting, but what
happens if you start second
guessing your decision once a
contract is signed?
According to an April 2014
survey by Redfin, one out of
four homeowners said they
would not buy their home again
given the opportunity. There
are a variety of reasons for this;
perhaps a family’s budget has
changed and the home is no
longer affordable, or maybe the
location of the property was
sacrificed for a better layout
and the commute is inconvenient. If done right, investing in
a home can be a rewarding decision, so consider the following
tips to keep yourself feeling
confident throughout the decision making process.
Listen to Your Real Estate
Agent
Your real estate agent is an
excellent resource when it
comes to avoiding buyer’s
remorse. As your representative, an agent is looking out for
your best interests and they
provide years of experience in
the industry that can be used to
your advantage. If an agent
expresses concerns about a
property or sale, be sure to listen. Remember that a good
agent has also taken time to get
to know you and hear what
you’re looking for in a home,
and they want you to have a
positive experience as a home
owner. If you need an objective
opinion, seek the counsel of
your agent first.
Slow Down
Though there can be pressure to quickly make an offer
on a home, you may not be 100
percent sure it’s the one for you.
Sometimes you need a little
time to consider the pros and
cons of a property. You may
want to see the home more than
once, both during the day and at
night, making sure to walk
through every room. Don’t miss
the little things, like that hard
to open closet door or that small
water stain on the ceiling. Have
you really thought about daily
life in this space? If you plan on
having kids in the future, also
consider how the home can
adapt to fit the needs of a growing family.
Be Realistic
Purchasing a house is a large
financial commitment. When
you’re creating a list of things
you need and want in a home,
be sure to outline clear financial goals and share them with
your realtor. Be wary of abandoning these goals when bidding on a home. If the property
exceeds your budget, it’s not the
right one for you. Before committing to any home, you may
also want to evaluate its resale
potential. Realistically, how
long do you plan on living there,
and how will the home appreciate during that time period?
Many people have a doubt or
two immediately after closing
on a new home, asking questions like: “Did I make the right
choice?” or “Did I pay a fair
price?.” Proactively combat
these questions by stepping
back and evaluating the facts
prior to a purchase so you can
accurately determine when a
home is the right choice for
you.

No on 2: John Jay Hooker
took his campaign to defeat
Amendment 2 on the road to the
Franklin Rotary Club. "This
constitutional amendment is on
the ballot to legalize what we do
now," Hooker said in stating his
opposition to it. The amendment would change the state
constitution to allow the governor to appoint judges to state
appellate courts as is done now.
The amendment adds a legislative confirmation requirement.
Thereafter, appellate judges
continue to stand for retention
elections with no opposition.
Historian Hooker recalled in
1971 Democrats controlled both
houses of the legislature. The
legislators decided, with the
Tennessee Bar, to promote a
retention election system to
keep Republican Gov. Winfield
Dunn
from
appointing
Republican judges to displace
Democrats. That practice has
continued for the past 40 years.
Hooker calls retention election
a “disgrace.” He said the reason
for overriding the constitution
is, “Lawyers think they pick
judges better than people.”
William
Blount,
Hooker’s
ancestor, was instrumental in
writing Tennessee’s original
constitution in 1796. There
were changes to that first constitution in 1835 and 1870.
“Judges shall be elected by
qualified voters of state,”
Hooker read from the copy of
the 1870 constitution he keeps
in his hip pocket and which he

Negative ads: Sick and tired
of negative political ads? In the
burgeoning use of negative ads
journalists are the culprits in
the view of top Vandy political
scientist John Geer. Data show
political attack ads moved up
from 30 percent in 2004 to 40 to
45 percent in 2012. The late
Washington Post columnist
David Broder believed negative
ads influenced the outcome of
the 1988 presidential campaign
between the senior George
Bush and Michael Dukakis.
Geer, however, says the data
prove that was not actually the
case. Broder thought ads like
the famous polluted Boston
Harbor ad, the scary Willie
Horton ad and the silly Dukakis
driving a tank ad unfairly persuaded voters to vote for Bush.
Broder began vetting political
ads in his columns. Many other
journalists across the country
followed his lead. Soon, journalists were covering candidate
speeches less and candidate
negative advertising more. In
other words, Geer opines, "It's
not Karl Rove, it’s David
Broder" who increased negativity, unintentionally, in political
ads. Professor Geer recently
spoke on negative advertising
at the Downtown Public
Library
in
Vanderbilt’s
Thinking Out of the Lunchbox
lecture series. He authored In

With this solar eclipse occurring so close to sunset, observers

Nashvillians should also make a

for August 21, 2017, as Nashville
is in the path of totality for a total

happy viewing!

Spend some money, Titans! Get some good players
is terribly unfair. We desperately need a different mind-set in
dealing with mobs and other
criminals.
I hope Nashville can find a
professional football team
someday. We have a nice stadium already in place for any
team and a practice squad they
can use. As long as they only
practice for half the game. We
wouldn’t want the Titans to
have to play for a full hour.

Cost over lives
So this week, we get the news
that our Metro Fire Department
is using faulty equipment. They
have had issues with equipment
failure ever since the maintenance was handed over to the
GSA to maintain. This was a
cost saving measure, we are
told. Really? What about the
potential loss of life and property as a result of poor maintenance?
My cars have been maintained by the same mechanic
for the past 20 years. Why? I
trust his team to keep me safe
on the road. If there is an issue
that needs repair, I trust him to
do it. I cannot imagine turning
my vehicles over to one of those
no-name "Quickie This or That"
service places for a repair or oil
change.
I feel sorry for the fact that
our firemen have no choice but
to turn over those trucks to
inept mechanics, who are
watching the time clock and not
the repair job. They don't have
to ride in those trucks either;
out of sight, out of mind is the
motto I suppose.
Plagiarism
How ironic that the Obama
democrat who’s trying to
unseat Senator Alexander finds
himself caught in the acts of
plagiarism! He finds himself in
good
company,
however;
remember Joe Biden and
M.L.K.
Do not knock
To the person who wrote
regarding troublesome door-todoor salespeople, property owners do have rights. There are
various Metro codes to help
you, including posting "No
Solicitation" signs and registering your property with the "Do
Not Knock" list. The Metro
Gov’t website will have details.
Charitable credit
I love the way these megacorporations take all the credit
for donations to charities by
customers and employees.
Now hiring
I noticed two very large ''Now
Hiring'' signs near 100 Oaks.
They made me feel good until I
noticed paper sellers standing
in front of them. Standing out
in the hot sun selling papers
must be paying off. What is
going on?
Punishment fits the crime
The escapees from Woodland
Hills Youth Center should be
punished adequately for their
actions. Might start with isolation and putting them on a diet
of bread and water for at least a
week. Why should the taxpayers
be burdened with already insurmountable costs — we already
pay for their livelihood, which,
when calculated, would blow
the mind of the average person.
Placing the blame on the facilities and the security officers is
not the root of the problem and

Guns can save lives
To the caller: “America,
wake up and do something
about gun violence.” The statistics show that most violent gun
deaths are caused by gangs. So I
would say we need to do something about the gangs. We don’t
hear about it, but every day
across America, there are new
Sandy Hooks ... in the inner city.
We need to control gangs. Not
guns, and the problem with the
guns isn’t the guns, it’s with the
people. We need to look at violence in our culture. The man
who beheaded his coworker ...
the radical Islamist who
beheaded his coworker, and we
are calling it “work place violence.” There was no gun
involved there. We need to look
at the violent nature in our society. There’s something about
the video games. Make your
children do something else
besides play violent video
games. There is so much mental
illness around. So go ahead and
restrict guns. You will be taking
the guns out of the hands of the
legal gun owners, who do not
commit most of the gun crimes,
and all the criminals still have
access to their guns. Mexico
would love for us to make guns
illegal. Then they would just
run them with the drugs to the
criminals. And I would like to

New money graffiti
To the old money of Belle
Meade, and even some of the
new money that does have taste,
I feel bad for you for having to
drive past that white house
where they’ve painted more
crap on the side. I feel so sorry
for ya’ll. Those are obviously
people who are new money and
were not raised with any kind
of taste. Come on. It’s Belle
Meade, people. It’s classic
homes. Nice, tasteful homes.
Get the junk off the sides of
your house. It’s not the slums of
New York. Thank you.
True patriotism
I just saw where a woman
who says she is a patriot confronted a Hispanic woman for
flying the Mexican flag in her
front yard. Never mind that the
house also had an American
flag flying on the front porch!
The so called "patriot" was
angry with the woman for flying the Mexican flag. Well, I
don't think this is any different
than attending a Saint Patrick's
Day parade or having a Union
Jack flag sticker on the back of
your car. Americans should be
proud of their ancestry, as well
as being proud of America!
After all, freedom to fly whatever flag you want to in your own
yard is what makes America
great! Long live the U.S.A!
Commercial Govʼt
It's official! Republicans just
don't know how to run state government. First, the State's
TennCare system is a computer
nightmare even though it cost
37 million dollars! Second, the
Department
of
Children's
Service is a mess with continuing escapes from juvenile institutions and very poor casework
by social workers. Finally, the
parole office has been supervising dead offenders! It seems
that running state government
like a business just doesn't work
somehow! I miss Ned!
Traffic circle issues
I have long been a customer
of the many restaurants in the
McCabe Park area. For many
years, there has been a very
smooth traffic pattern on
Murphy Road and 46th Avenue.
Now some brilliant individual
has decided that this intersection needs a traffic circle. The
construction has caused traffic
snarls and revenue loss for the
businesses in that area. It has
been the habit to name projects
like this for the originator. I
think the same should be done
at this site. My problem is the
name? Should it be called
"Jackass
Junction"
or

HOUSES

"Simpleton Circle.”
Too late for America
Although all the murders
from guns you spoke about are
horrific, and they are, there is
another side the media does not
talk about. What about the
father in St. Louis whose 17
year old daughter went to get
something out of the car, and
two armed men put a gun to her
head and brought her back
inside. The father had been
looking out the window,
retrieved his gun, and shot both
men, killing one. He saved his
daughter and the rest of his
family.
Or what about the recent
beheading where the recent
convert to Islam (oh, I said the I
word), who beheaded one sweet
grand-mom, and was stabbing
another, until the COO shot
him? But, are guns going to save
the country, is taking them
away going to save the country,
or Democrats or Republicans?
No!
LP Circus
Lost another game (it was a
give away). Why don’t the owners spend money and get good
players here? Nashville does
not deserve this bad team. A
good high school football team
could beat the Titans any day.
Why not let the high schools
play in the circus ring called LP
Field?

Yeah, we need more development in Green Hills — like heck

January 18, 1917, in Richmond,
Va, to Frederick and Susan
Bronaugh Garber.
She graduated Phi
Beta Kappa with a
degree
in
Mathematics from
Randolph-Macon
Woman's College in
Slayden 1937. During World
War II, she enlisted in the
United States Naval Reserve. In
the WAVES, she worked as a
cryptographer and later as
Aide to Commodore C.E. Battle,
Chief of Staff and Commander
of the Service Force Atlantic
Fleet. During that time, she met
and corresponded with a young
Navy Lieutenant, Robert (Rob)
Lee Slayden. In San Francisco
on VJ Day - August 15, 1945 Amelia and Rob celebrated the
end of the War together and six
months later they were married.
They raised their five children and were active in their
church, West End United
Methodist, where Slayden
devoted many years as a volunteer and later was employed as
secretary to the senior pastor.
In her later years, she enjoyed
traveling, entertaining and living at Richland Place, where
she cherished her many
friends. Slayden was preceded
in death by her devoted husband of 47 years, Robert Lee
Slayden, as well as her sister,
Elizabeth Garber Thomson of
Richmond, Va.
She is survived by her five
children,
Dan
(Mickey)
Slayden, Sue (Mike) Salato and
Bob (Tommie) Slayden Jr., of
Nashville,
Betsy
(Hank)
Widdop of Memphis, and Marty
(Peter Ordway) Slayden of
Colorado Springs, Colo.; as well
as her nephew, Jim (Kathrine)
Thomson of Ashland, Va.; and
her sister-in-law, Chris Tibbott
of Nashville. She also leaves
behind six grandchildren,
Michael Slayden, Karen (Kurt)
Kaiser, Jay (Kristin) Salato,
Adam Slayden, Chris (Erika
Hinds) Widdop, and Dustin
Ordway; as well as five greatgrandchildren, Kacy Slayden,
Kylie Slayden, Andrew Kaiser,
Anna Kaiser and Slayden
Widdop.
A Memorial service will be
held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October
10, at the West End United
Methodist Church, 2200 West
End Avenue, with visitation an
hour before the service.
Slayden's family would like
to recognize the staff at
Richland
Place,
Belmont
Village, Barton House and
Gentiva Hospice for their kind,
loving care during Slayden's
slow decline due to Alzheimer's
disease.

Four bedrooms and two baths. This darling, darling cottage is within 3/4 miles for the mall- not that
you would EVER want to leave this precious home. My favorite part of this home is the screened in
back porch overlooking the koi pond and fully landscaped back yard. There is a full fence and a two
car garage- though one side is being used for storage. The main floor has a wide open living room
that opens to the screened porch. The kitchen is adorable- you will step down into it. It has a center
island and breakfast nook with built in seating for six. There is a fireplace in the kitchen as well! We
are leasing this at $3000.00 a month. Month to month is available. Not for a slightly higher charge.

An Old Favorite someone asked me to reprint: The Horror! The Horror!
I was at Momma’s on Saturday to borrow my grandmother’s stole, some
white kid gloves, some pearl earrings, and a clutch. I found the stole in the
Closet of Never Worn But Can’t Throw Away Clothes. I found the pearl earrings,
and I went searching for a non- descript clutch. I went to Momma’s closet. It
was weird. It has been a long time since I have been in Momma’s closet. When
I was in high school, I seemed to find a lot of dresses that I liked in Momma’s
closet- she was in her forties, then. There was one particular dress that she had
that was a brownish gold silk number that she wore with the sexiest shoes I had
ever laid eyes on in my life- they were a bronzy gold. The heels were about 3”
tall and the very thin leather laces wrapped five times around your ankle. I wore
that dress out with Jimmy Harwood to the MUS Prom, and I thought I was Cher.
I almost died when I broke the heel off doing some fancy dance move…poor
Jimmy. The date went downhill from that point as well. Cinderella had lost her
shoe. The silk dress just wasn’t “the same’ without the sexy gold strappy shoes.
I might as well have been wearing tennis shoes…kerplunk went the date.
I was in Momma’s closet when I looked down and saw them. Tucked over
to the side, there THEY were in all their ugly glory. Right beside the world’s ugliest shoes that a mother could ever wear- Birkenstocks- were a pair of shoes
that made her Birkenstocks look better than The Sexy Strappy Made To Go With
the Silk Dress Shoes. Flat, leather, GOLD loafers. The dreaded GOLD STAGE.
Apparently, a woman goes through several stages of clothing- in high school,
it is all about showing off your emerging figure. In your twenties, you are actu-

THE
ally learning that going around naked is not exactly flattering. By thirty, a woman
has found that best style for her- and she buys in in every color. By her forties,
a woman has a favorite brand- and she buys stock. In her fifties, a woman toys
with whether or not she can really run errands in workout clothes. Unfortunately,
some who shouldn’t, do not go with the majority vote. In her sixties, a woman
starts the downward spin.
In her sixties, a woman starts thinking that those sheered sleeves with the
satin collar and satin cuffs are stylish. They think that the tucked out shirt thing
is new and trendy. They think pants with elastic is clever. And they start to say
things like,” How can you wear shoes with heels that high? I just don’t see how
you do it?!” And, then, they give you that head shake that is intended to make
you feel like a harlot for being in your forties and wearing 3” high heels.
In their sixties, women start wearing sensible shoes, which is another name
for U-G-L-Y. The sixty year old woman cannot bear to think that she is too old for
strappy heels. Why, in fact, those strappy shoes simply do not “go with’ the
tucked out elastic pant look- Indeed, that look requires something less dramatic,
say, - a nice ugly flat shoe with maybe a small slanted heel for drama. And, so
the sixty year old woman goes out and buys a pair in every color.
And, then, she hits 70. The fashionable 70 year old woman is ready to explore again. She is ready to really go for some bling-she wants to really surprise
her friends with her Zing power- her stylishness- her willingness to be daring- wild
and crazy- so she goes for -- the GOLD shoe. The glorious golden goddess of
Shoes- the power wielding- trend pushing-risk taking Golden Goddess.
There they were. The flat, leather, gold loafer in all its glory sitting there
gleaming. Glaring at me as if in thirty years, I , too, will think they are cute. But,
I won’t. I know I won’t ever think that those awful things are cute because they
are ugly! Ugly! Ugly! And, besides, Everyone knows I only wear heels–except at
the gym. I know I won’t ever like them or wear them because I am not at all like
my mother, and I am not ever going to ever wear sheer sleeves. I know I will
never wear those awful things because my children are so cruel to me that if I
EVER were to buy a pair, they would throw them away and not even tell me.
And, then, they would ridicule me for life. Children can be so mean to their mothers.
Well, I am off to return Momma’s pearl earrings, her clutch, and Gram’s stole,
and, while I am there, I will be throwing away a darling pair of gold loafers.
Momma won’t ever know who did it. Don’t tell!
Have a great day, My friends, Remember, a well-heeled woman always fashionable!
