IF YOU NEED A GLUTEN-FREE WAFER, please indicate this to the clergy
administering the bread.
In our Diocese, we pray for: St. Francis Church in Rutherfordton and St. Francis
Church Cherokee.
In our Anglican Communion, we give thanks for: The Church of the Province of
West Africa and the Diocese of Gambia; and we pray for our companion diocese of
Durgapur in India.
In our world, we pray for: The men and women of the U.S. armed services and all
who work for justice, non-violence, and peace throughout the world.
THE FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR are given by Tom & Lynne Penn to the
Glory of God and in thanksgiving for their children and family.
TODAY WE WELCOME THE REV. TOBY SUMMEROUR as our preacher.
He and his wife, Carol, live in Lake Toxaway. Prior to retirement, Toby served as
Associate Rector at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Cashiers.
HEALING STATION AT ALL SERVICES: The laying-on of hands and prayers
for healing will be offered at all of our Sunday liturgies today. Come to the Chapel
during the Eucharist and intercessors will pray with and for you. You may specify a
particular intention if you wish. All prayer requests are held in strict confidence,
and all are welcome.
MEMBERS OF FOLKPSALM AT ST. PHILIP’S TODAY: FolkPsalm is a
North Carolina music ensemble that combines modern translations of the psalms
and contemporary folk music. St. Philippian Elizabeth Bahnson is a member of the
group, and has contributed to several FolkPsalm CDs. We will get a chance to hear
Elizabeth and fellow FolkPsalm member Brittany Whitmire play at St. Philip’s at
the 9:00 & 11:15 a.m. services. You will be able to purchase FolkPsalm CD’s,
including the newly-released A Dove On Distant Oaks today and at the upcoming
International Bazaar. Proceeds will benefit the St. Philip’s World Missions
Committee.
THE BREVARD AREA CROP WALK is next Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Twenty-five percent of funds raised goes to the Sharing House Food Pantry.
Questions about walking? Contact Ernie Speckman (883-4603) or Richard/Martha
Mayberry (884-4398).
WELCOME + NEW MEMBER GATHERINGS START TODAY. If you’re
new to St. Philip’s, wanting to formalize your membership, or simply enjoy a
“refresher” in what the Episcopal Church and St. Philip’s are all about, we have a
series for you! The second ‘Soulful Series’ will focus on what we’re about as a
congregation and as Christians in the Anglican tradition. This will be an 8-week
series beginning today at 10:10 a.m. in Miller Hall. This series is strongly
recommended for those who want to participate in our rite of welcome for new
members and new Episcopalians, which will take place January 25. Please see Rob
if you would like further info.
A NEWCOMER’S RECEPTION is planned for next Sunday at 10:10 a.m. in the
parlor. We want all visitors and newcomers to St. Philip’s to know they are warmly
and genuinely welcomed! Representatives from the Newcomers Committee will be
there to answer any questions you may have about our church, its mission or
opportunities to worship and serve. For additional information, please call Marty
Wainwright (884-5798).
OCTOBER IS OUR MONTH to supply non-perishable food products for the
TCM / Sharing House food pantry. Please remember to bring food and paper
products to the narthex during the Sundays in October. They may also be dropped
off in or near the box that is marked Sharing House in the parish house foyer. If you
wish to contribute money instead of, or in addition to food, please make checks
payable to St. Philip’s, with a note on the memo line designating the check
“Sharing House Food,” or put cash in an envelope clearly marked for this purpose.
PARISH CAMPING TRIP: Mark your calendars and come camping with St.
Philip's the weekend of October 17th-19th. We have reserved the group campground,
Kuykendall, in Pisgah National Forest. There is plenty of room for everyone and
available restrooms. You can pitch your tent anytime after 4:00 pm on October
17th. Stay the whole weekend, one night, or just stop by for fun. Planned activities
include games, music, storytelling, campfires, and s'mores, with plenty of free time
to hike or just enjoy the outdoors. There are plenty of grills at the campground to
cook your own food. S'mores will be provided. Only $10 per family for the entire
weekend to cover rental costs. Don't forget to sign up on the bulletin board in the
YAC!
ST. PHILIP’S NEEDS HELP providing and serving lunch for around 175 people
at Church of the Advocate in Asheville on Sunday, October 26th at 1:30 p.m.
Please sign up in on the easel in the parish house foyer to indicate how you can
help.
YOUTH CONFIRMATION: Chase has begun our process to prepare older
teenagers to affirm their baptismal vows during the rite of confirmation in January
2015. This is a significant rite of passage for our soon-to-be young adults! If you
are age 15 or up and want to learn about confirmation, please contact Chase ASAP
to find out what you need to know.
EYC NEWS: EYC meets TONIGHT at the Bread of Life from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00
p.m. Wednesday morning Bible Study continues on 10/15 at 7:00 a.m. at Sunrise
Café. Text ‘followstpyouth’ to 40404 to receive texts about EYC events!
TO ATTEND THE WOMEN’S RETREAT Feb. 6-8, 2015 at Lake Logan,
please sign up on the easel in the parish house foyer and turn in a check made
payable to St. Philip's (note women's retreat on the memo line) for $100/double
occupancy or $150/single occupancy, no later than Nov. 1.
TESTING, TESTING…1.2.3. By now, you will have read about the pilot program
for 2015 about the parish accepting credit cards. As with any new program, there
needs to be a test run. Starting in October, the “parish activities” donate button on
the website will be made active for ONE purpose and that one purpose only. It will
be found at the top of the Quick Finder directory. Click on Quick Finder on the
Home Page www.stphilipsbrevard.org. If you wish to donate money to the fund for
the Boys and Girls Club Christmas Project, you may use your credit card. This is a
perfect way to infuse that fund with some much needed start-up capital for
purchasing wrapping supplies and gifts that are needed in addition to the donated
ones AND simultaneously allow the treasurers to test the credit card payment
system. Please do not use that button for any other donations at this time. The
activities button and the donations/offering button will both be ready to go in 2015
for the year-long pilot!
ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH the Daughters of the King will host a program
given by the Rev. Lyndon Harris on the Journey to Forgiveness. By using a little
wit, a sense of humor and loving touch we will see why forgiveness is a “trainable
life skill.” This program is open to St. Philip’s members first as space will be
limited. If you have someone who might benefit from this, please invite them but
remember we will take only those on the sign-up sheet in the parish house foyer. If
you have any questions, please call Tissie Stroup (553-0532), Mary Sherwood
(966-9628) or Jackie Corlis (891-7885). Looking forward to seeing you!
ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31ST (Halloween!), the EPP will host a simple pizza
dinner in the YAC for children and youth (infants through 12th grade) and their
families - and for all those who are missing their own trick-or-treaters! The dinner
will start at 5:00 p.m.; all you have to do is stop by to have a quick dinner before
you go Trick or Treating with your family or friends. We also encourage teens to
meet up at the church and share some pizza before heading out! Please sign up on
the board in the parish house foyer so we know how many to prepare for. Want to
help out those frazzled parents trying to get out the door with gaily bedecked small
fry on a school night by helping with the dinner? Contact Jill Stewart at
[email protected].
