Tuition & Notary Public Mrs. Sandy Zaleski, ext. 404 Psalm 23 My Dear People, This past summer we lost one of our dear sisters to cancer, Sr. James Grace, I.H.M. Because it happened over the summer months (The actual date of her passing was July 6th) many of us were not able to pay our respects as we might have. For this reason on Wednesday, October 29th at 7:00 pm we will offer a special Memorial Mass for Sr. Grace and I invite you not only to come but to spread the word to others who knew her as well. Sister Grace had struggled with cancer for some time and continued to serve children of our parish school despite her personal sufferings. We do well to come together at this time to remember her with gratitude to God for her life and work among us and in solidarity with our Sisters and school children who have experienced such a personal loss. The short, accessible document develops the 10 themes of the meeting and will be utilized by study groups and families, and in curricula and other materials and is available in our religious goods store for only $8.00. World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. In 2014, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on October 19. Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the next-to-last Sunday in October. As described by Pope John Paul II, World Mission Sunday is "an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions of the world" (see Redemptoris Missio 81). Pope John Paul II has also spoken of the Propagation of the Faith's General Fund of support, calling this a "central fund of solidarity." In a message delivered on a recent World Mission Sunday, the Pope said: "The offerings that will be collected [on World Mission Sunday] are destined for a common fund of solidarity distributed, in the Pope's name, by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith among the missions and missionaries of the entire world." Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the Missions grow as new dioceses are formed, as new seminaries are opened because of the growing number of young men hearing Christ's call to follow Him as priests, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and as other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the message of Christ and His Church. That is why the involvement and commitment of Catholics from around the world is so urgently needed. Offerings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to the Propagation of the Faith worldwide. Mission dioceses - about 1,100 at this time - receive regular annual assistance from the funds collected. In addition, these mission dioceses submit requests to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples for assistance, among other needs, for catechetical programs, seminaries, the work of Religious Communities, for communication and transportation needs, and for the building of chapels, churches, orphanages and schools. These needs are matched with the funds gathered in each year. The world's national directors of the Propagation of the Faith vote on these requests, matching the funds available with the greatest needs. These funds are then distributed, in their entirety, to mission dioceses throughout the world. 162—St. Martin of Tours 4 Presenting…the 2014 – 2015 Student Council! In our school gym on Thursday, September 25 th, twenty-two members of the Eighth Grade Class took a courageous step by standing before their peers, students and faculty in grades 5 to 8, to speak as candidates for a particular Office on Student Council. Their experience ranged from students who have attended SMT since Pre K to those here only one year…and all agreed that their love for our school prompted them to run for Student Council with the hope that they can continue to make a difference in our school and our SMT community by “giving back” what they have received in friendship and education. The voting results, difficult as it was, were announced on Friday morning…and we CONGRATULATE the following: President: Elvy DeCoo Vice-President: Arianna Torres Secretary: Kaela Hicks Treasurer: Vy Le Sec. of Religious Affairs: Gabrielle Hoang Sec. of Student Outreach: Ericka Ekobeni Sec. of Athletic Affairs: Daten Beasley Classroom Representatives Grade 5 Room 203 Grade 5 Room 206 Grade 6 Room 303 Wesley Rolon Lauren King Miguel Martins Elizabeth Steinmetz Christopher Wilkens Kiana Sampson Grade 6 Room 306 John Steinmetz Alyssa Johnson Grade 7 Room 302 Nicole Colon Eileen Velez-Arce Grade 8 Room 402 Dennis Morales Samantha Gonzalez Grade 8 Room 405 Edison Felipe David Eniola Grade 7 Room 305 Julian Marin Jaileen Ayala Our Student Council Officers were installed after the 8:30 am First Friday Liturgy on October 3, 2014.
