For heaven’s sake, go through your underwear drawer immediately and get rid of anything with holes, mold or unsightly
stains; this is an emergency! Give them to people who are in need, use them for old rags around the house, but for the sake of your
mother, living or dead, dispose of them before the day is out! Why the rush? You never know when you’ll die and someone who
doesn’t know you well enough submits your name for canonization; that’s right, to become a saint. TV on Sunday covered the
beatification of Pope Paul VI; he is now called Blessed Paul VI due to his saintly life as Shepherd of the Church at a very difficult time
of history. This is the time they start bringing out relics of the newly Blessed or Sainted; and at the offertory of the Mass of
Beatification they processed out a large cylinder that looked like it had a T-shirt in it. I quickly cleaned my glasses and slapped myself
to make sure I wasn’t dreaming or delusional. The commentator on the Mass solemnly proclaimed, “They are now presenting an
undershirt worn by Blessed Paul VI.”
You may be different but I don’t want my underwear paraded around after my demise; I don’t care if the Church declares me
in heaven; it’s no reason to embarrass a person just because they are beholding the Beatific Vision. Admittedly the chances of any of
us being put in the pipeline for popular piety of a patron saint, especially Rectors, is small. Thinking ahead--leave some of your hair
and clipped fingernails in a bag with a signed testimony of its authenticity; these are first class relics. Unmentionables and other
things close to or used by the Blessed are second class relics; things that have touched the body of the Blessed or Saint are third
class. Out of abundance of caution I’ve already removed t-shirts out of my wardrobe that say things like “I’m With Stupid,” “Go
Chiefs!” “Nebraska is for Lovers.” One can never be too careful.
Does the foregoing seem a little self absorbed to you? Well, yes; it’s the point of the Gospel today and something that Pope
Francis has been speaking, preaching and shouting from the Vatican since he became the Holy Father: Our duty is service, not to
ourselves but to the People of God, especially the poor. We can never become holy just watching after ourselves, we can only
achieve true sanctification in the service of those most in need. It goes along with the old line that everyone wants to go to heaven,
but no one wants to die to get there; everyone wants to be a saint, but not everyone wants to serve others to attain
sainthood.

Do you receive the word of God with joy as the
Thessalonians did? Their faith showed in their actions. They
became models for other believers.
The first reading tells us to put our faith into action. This
passage is part of a long list of ordinances God commanded the
Israelites to observe. God will judge us by how we treat our
neighbors. God will hear the cries of any whom we neglect or
mistreat and will come to their defense.
In today’s Gospel the Pharisees put the question of God’s law
to Jesus. “Which commandment of the law is the greatest?” (Matthew 22:36) How could he possibly choose from all the
detailed commandments the Jews observed? He was sure to
offend somebody by his answer! Of course, Jesus went right to
the heart of the matter. Love is the greatest commandment—love
of God and love of neighbor. Everything else is based on this.

Estimados padres de familia, la semana pasada cubrimos
Ambiente Seguro y una pequeña lección básica sobre la
Teología del Cuerpo en relación con nuestro propio cuerpo y el
alma y las de los demás, desde la concepción hasta la muerte.
Como cristianos se nos enseña y recuerda que en el Evangelio
de hoy “Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda
tu alma y con toda tu mente.” Este es el mayor y el primer
mandamiento.
Y el segundo es parecido: “Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti
mismo." Estos mandamientos son la ley de Dios en la forma en
que tratamos a nosotros mismos, nuestro cuerpo y los que nos
rodean. Todos sabemos que Dios nos hizo y cuando hacemos
algo a otro en realidad lo estamos haciendo a Dios. Tenemos
que tomar una posición y no tolerar el hostigamiento, inadecuado
o media comportamiento físico o verbal. Con la tecnología
moderna tenemos que ser conscientes de qué y quiénes son
nuestros hijos se están comunicando con en el internet,
mensajes de texto y con quien se reúnen. Por favor revise con
sus hijos el material enviado a casa.

EL AMOR ESTÁ EN LA ACCIÓN
¿Recibes la palabra de Dios con gozo, al igual que hicieron
los tesalonicenses? Su fe se reflejó en sus acciones. Se
convirtieron en ejemplo para otros creyentes.
La primera lectura nos dice que pongamos nuestra fe en
acción. Este pasaje es parte de una larga lista de reglas que
Dios impone a los israelitas para su observancia y para respetar
su Ley. Dios nos juzgará por cómo nosotros tratamos a nuestros
semejantes. Dios escuchará los llantos de todo aquel al que
desatendemos o maltratamos, y vendrá en su defensa.
En el Evangelio de hoy, los fariseos plantean la cuestión de la
Ley de Dios. “¿Cuál es el mandamiento más importante de la
Ley?” (Mateo 22:36). ¿Cómo es posible que él pueda elegir de
entre todos los detallados mandamientos que los judíos
observaban? ¡Sin duda que ofendería a alguien con su
respuesta! Sin embargo, Jesús fue derecho al grano. El amor es
el más grande de todos los mandamientos, el amor de Dios y el
amor del prójimo. Todo lo demás se basa en esto.

Hoy es Domingo del Sacerdocio Oct. 26
Felicitamos y agradecemos a los Sacerdotes de nuestra
Parroquia. Gracias por todo lo que hacen por nuestra parroquia,
nuestras familias. Que nuestro señor los siga bendiciendo con
salud y bienestar.
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En tiempos pasados, cuando los fieles latinoamericanos se
enfermaban gravemente se mandaba traer al sacerdote para que
le administrara los “santos óleos” o la “extremaunción”. Nadie
quería ver a un sacerdote acércasele con los óleos porque significaba que uno estaba por morir.
Gracias a Dios, las reformas del Concilio Vaticano II han
regresado al sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos su sentido
original. Este sacramento es celebrado para todos los que tengan
alguna enfermedad seria, aunque no sea de muerte. El
sacramento es para pedir consuelo para el enfermo y si es
voluntad de Dios, la salud. Este sacramento no debe ser
reservado para preparar al paciente para la muerte.
Santiago, en su carta a los cristianos, nos dice que si uno de
nosotros está enfermo que llame al presbítero de la Iglesia para
que lo unja con óleo o aceite santo. Y añade que la oración
hecha con fe perdonará los pecados del enfermo y lo sanará para
que recupere su vida cotidiana. Este sacramento, como todos los
sacramentos, son para la vida, tanto la vida cotidiana como lo
vida eterna.
