PROGRAMS All members need to attend this week;s luncheon meeting to welcome Tyron Spearman, Georgia District Exchange Clubs President for 2014-2015. Tyron is twice President of the Tifton Exchange Club having served in many positions as he also has done in the Georgia District. He will speak to us and our guests about services of the Division. FAIR WORK DAYS COMING President Tony Tanner reminds members to set aside Saturday, October 25th and November 8th to carry yard and construction tools to our fairgrounds for work days from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Minor clean ups and repairs need to be made to our facilities. HOFFMAN PRAISES HEALTH SYSTEM Virginia Peagler, September Programs Chairman, introduced and presented Dr. Kenneth Calamia, CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross as our last September speaker. Dr. Calamia recently took the System’s helm in Waycross after 22 years in Jacksonville, Mayo. Dr. Calamia is passionate about Mayo’s primary value: the needs of the patient comes first. This commitment is expected from each employee. The “three shields” of Mayo represent integrated clinical practice, education and research. These shields inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being through giving the best care possible. Chief Administrative Officer Mary J. Hoffman was introduced by Dr. Calamia. She has been in Mayo Clinic since 1985 with Jacksonville and Waycross campuses. She is now full time in Waycross. Ms. Hoffman announced that Mayo Clinic earned Number 1 on the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll. The Clinic is recognized as the best hospital in the nation for 2014-2015. Mayo Clinic Florida is certified as the first center in Florida designated National Comprehensive Stroke Center. MCHSW Services Area covers ten local counties with a population of 205,000. It is 4th largest of 31 medium-sized hospitals in Georgia. A new $2.5 million investment has been made in a 1.5 T Siemeus Aera MRI machine in 2014. A $30 to $40 million request has been made for a new integrated clinic at Mayo Waycross. More investments are being made in outreach centers surrounding Waycross. SATILLA RIVERKEEPER ASHBY NIX ENHANCES WATERSHED’S ENVIRONMENT Steve Pope presented Ashby Nix Executive Director of Satilla Riverkeeper. Ms. Nix reported the river is one of Georgia’s cleanest rivers that must be protected. Volunteers join to clean the river water and shore lines of trash regularly. The rivers is a blackwater system caused by the pine needles, rotting cypress, leaves and peal moss in the system. The agency is a 501C3 non-profit that receives no federal or state monies. Operations are funded by donations for the one full-time and one part-time workers. She said Riverkeeper works with the community the legislature, government agencies and experts to: restore wetlands that improves water quality, prevent flooding and provide habitat for wildlife; protect the Satilla from pollution to improve water quality; and educate communities along the river about their right to clean water for fishing, swimming, and drinking. Riverkeeper works the 260 miles to Jekyll Island, the adjoining land, ecology of mussels, water, fish (removing flathead catfish), history of ferry boats and communities on the river, Forestry, Recreations and issues (such as trash, quality of water, invasive species, floating baskets, etc.). River clean ups are starting at Jamestown landing, educationadopt a landing, keep Waycross-Ware County Beautiful, contaminated fish (coal fired energy plants runnoff ), land use practices, man-made cuts with four-wheelers, land conservation easements, policies with Georgia Water Coalition.
