The Gospel of John includes some of the greatest stories of the New Testament: “The Temptation of Jesus,” “Nicodemus’ Visit with Jesus,” “The Woman at
the Well,” “The Man Born Blind,” “The Raising of Lazarus.”
IF ONLY…
At first glance they are completely different stories. But they do have at least one thing
in common. They all lead us into that place of regretful speculation that begins with
the words, “If only…” “If only you could turn these stones into bread, you wouldn’t
ever be hungry again.” “If only I could return to the womb and start my life over, then
I could follow you.” “If only I hadn’t trashed my life chasing after another man and
another and another, then I wouldn’t feel so dry and lonely.” “If only this man or his
parents hadn’t sinned, he would see things clearly now.” “If only you had come sooner, Lord, my brother would not have died.” And in every case, the unspoken implication is that now it’s too late. The road ahead is closed; the future already determined
by the past.
The message of the cross breaks into this world of closed futures over and over again
with the astonishing proclamation that the chains that hold us to the past have been
severed once and for all. The cross crashes into the center of every sentence that begins with the words, “if only” and re-writes history with the promise that, because of
what God has done in Christ Jesus, therefore the path in front of you has been blown
wide open and paved with possibilities as yet unimagined.
So we journey on, reflecting back but never walking backward. We move through the
present season of our lives, remembering all that we have been released from, not burdened by regret or obsessing about what might have been, but rather as a people set
free… an Easter people called to rise up in the sure and certain hope of resurrection.
And we walk boldly into a new morning.
See you Sunday,
Jeffery G. Gramza, DMin

October 29th: David was a liar, adulterer, and murderer, so why is he a hero of our
faith?
WONDERING HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS?
STUCK IN A RUT OF SERVING IN THE SAME WAY FOR TOO LONG?
WANT TO FIND YOUR "SWEET SPOT" BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN?

Wernle Youth and Family Treatment Center is a family focused, child centered agency providing opportunities for the
growth, development and treatment of troubled children and
their families-individually, interpersonally and sociallythrough the best-practice programs and a variety of therapy
approaches.
At St. John Lutheran Church, we have participated in a ministry to assist the residential boys by donating personal care items, clothing, art supplies, recreation equipment
and hygiene items. These items are boxed, loaded and then transported to Richmond,
IN (we are seeking additional drivers).
Many of the residents are over 5’10” wearing sizes ranging from L to XXL in men’s
clothing. The school continues to require plain, solid colors (no stripes, no logos).
At this time there is an urgent need for: socks, Queen Bed Spreads, Twin Sheet Sets,
Sneakers and Dress Shoes (10-13), Jeans (boys and men’s sizes) , T-shirts (Large and
X-Large), boxers, shampoo and combs. A more detailed list is located in the Outer
Narthex where donations may be dropped off in the bin marked “For Wernle”.

Social Concerns
Thank you so much for all your contributions for school supplies which went to the CALL Food
Pantry. You helped many children start the school year! It is much appreciated that you give
whenever you are asked!
Lela, Pat & Marilyn (American Red Cross)
What a great Bloodmobile in September. Our goal was 85 and we collected 114 units. So a special Thank You to our donors. Hope to see you at the November Drive. A special thanks for the
use of the Family Life Center. Also to the men who help with setup and tear down. Also to
Gary for his extra cleaning and help.
Karen Heindel
Thank you to all who sent cards and remembered me in prayer following my knee surgery. Special thanks to Pastor Jeff for his visit prior to my surgery.
Don VanderHorst (Celina Parks and Recreation)
Thanks so much for operating the concession stand during the Fall Festival. The Fall Festival
was fantastic and your crew did an outstanding job with the food and drink. Thanks again for all
your help!
St. John is a generous contributor to the CALL Food and Clothing Pantry. It is often asked “What should I give?” or “What is needed?” In
response, we are doing an “Item of the Month” donation. Although
any item is greatly appreciated, the “Item of the Month” reflects those
items that are not discounted. This is one great way that St. John is
Making the Love of Christ Known.
ITEM OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER – MACARONI & CHEESE
A special THANK-YOU to Ralph & Kate Luth for delivering food items to CALL for the
