SQUARE DANCE CLUB
NEWSLETTER
SEP—OCT 2014
Frank Kot
On September 25, about 20 Tom Katz Officers and
Committee Chairs met again at the home of Joyce
Lovelace to discuss our club’s dance plans for the
year. Sadly, one of our important members was
missing. Frank Kot had died on August 19.
On Aug. 19, 2014, our dear
friend, Frank Kot, lost his 3
year battle with advanced
colon cancer. He fought
hard with numerous rounds
of chemo, with a few landing
him in the hospital with life
threatening side-effects. He
was 82 years old.
Frank’s good friend and partner, Barb Ash, has graciously written a tribute to his life. Thanks, Barb. I
will add only one small example of Frank’s sense of
humor. Recently, when we asked him if he would
stay on as our Co-Treasurer, Frank replied: “Heck, I
don’t even buy green bananas”.
Ramblings
Finances:
As of now, our club finances appear to be stable. We
have a bank balance and, last year, we actually made
a few dollars. We have some new members and,
with the help of Walt’s hard work and lessons, we
hope to gain more.
As of this writing, our Membership Lists and our
Committee Listings are not quite complete. We always encourage new people to volunteer to be Officers or Committee Chairs. We direct this appeal especially to our new members. Our present officers
and chairs have held their positions for some years.
Most of them would be happy to turn over their responsibilities to someone else—and especially to get
new energy and new ideas into the club.
Are you tired of seeing the same format in every issue of this newsletter? Or seeing exactly the same
format in every Tom Katz flyer? You can do something about it. Volunteer (1) to be the Publicity/
Newsletter Chair or (2) to write either a Column or
an occasional story or biographical sketch for this
newsletter. It comes out, at most, every second
month. See Ron or Mary Ann Reuter for info or to
volunteer.
Frank worked 40 years as
the head of the metallurgical department of
Hoskins Wire Manufacturing Co. in Detroit.. He
tried to retire earlier, but they kept calling him
back to help with jobs they were having trouble
with.
Frank is survived by 1 sister, 2 sons, David and
Dan, 1 niece, and 1 adopted grandson.
Frank loved to dance, and was an active member
for years with the Tom Katz. He served as an
officer ever since he joined the club, as their
Travel Chairman, Membership Chairman, President and, most recently, Treasurer with his good
friend and dance partner, Barb Ash. Barb and
Frank even took ballroom dance lessons.
Frank was an active member and officer of a
Model A club. Frank loved fixing things, and
helped his good friend Bill keep his Model A
running. They went on many trips around Michigan (including a yearly blueberry-picking trip).
On these trips they carried along spare parts in
case of breakdowns.

Frank Kot (Cont’d from p. 1)
May 2: Subscription Dance
Frank enjoyed camping, and belonged to the 007
camping club, and acted as their President for years.
In his younger years, he loved to ski, play golf, and
especially to play tennis which he claimed to do quite
well. He also enjoyed going to plays and movies,
reading books, and doing crossword puzzles. Frank
was great at math, and used those skills to help our
club know how we were doing financially.
Frank liked animals, especially cats. His last cat, a
Siamese named Pi, pre-deceased him 6 months ago.
A memorial to the Macomb Humane Society is being
taken in Frank’s name from anyone who would like
to contribute. An envelope is on the Treasurer’s
table.
Frank felt he had a good life, and was very thankful
that God gave him 3 years after a diagnosis of 3
months. His ashes will be inurned at the Great Lakes
National Cemetery in Holly, MI, and his family is
planning a Memorial Service at the cemetery on Friday, November 7 at 2:30 pm.
Frank will be greatly missed by everyone – especially by me.
Lovingly submitted by Barb Ash.
NEW ACTIVITIES
June 6: TK Dance
Thanks to Marge Humig for arranging the enjoyable
‘fireworks’ bus trip to Windsor. The gambling, music, dinner, and fireworks were all enjoyable.

Performance of “White Christmas”. See Marge for

Notes from Joyce Lovelace:
BASKETS FOR STATE CONVENTION
When SEMA made their request for clubs to
donate baskets for the state convention, our
Tom Katz members donated not one, but
two, baskets with the theme ‘Italy.’ Betty
VanHavermaat and Diane Beauchamp did
a great job collecting the items and making
both baskets look so exquisite. Money
from this raffle was used to help pay for
installation of plastic dance floor tiles.

ANNIVERSARY CLOCK MYSTERY
SOLVED by Tom Katz. Heel and
Toe Squaredance Club from Manchester,
New Hampshire had sent their anniversary
clock on a goodwill mission by passing it
on from club-to-club during travels. After
a personal call from Pete and Olanda
Zeffer saying the clock was already mailed,
the Heel and Toe SDC was delighted to
have it in time for their 55th Anniversary
dance in October. Tom Katz to the rescue!
