By Baptism, all Catholics are called to participate in the mission of the Church and share their faith as missionaries. I had a fun time with the GOSHEN EIGHT who traveled with me to Western Massachusetts for the recent SERVICE TRIP FOR THE POOR. The greatest part of the day was horsing around with the other men throughout the work day, and trading stories with them (some true, others fabricated) after hours in the bunk house. We had ample food and some infused libations. The best part of the weekend, was knowing that we served someone other than ourselves, which I believe pleased God! I realize that we had a half dozen men who were unable to make it because of the long weekend, but who committed to another project that might be undertaken over a two day weekend. To that end, I and Will Rein (Director of Missionaries) will be working on a spring time project, again based out of Western Massachusetts, and it will be scheduled for late April. Presently we are working on three Youth based programs, which include this Thanksgiving Day week YOUNG ADULT MISSIONARY TRIP TO ECUADOR, the MARCH FOR LIFE, which is held in Washington D.C. in January, and the HIGH SCHOOL SERVICE TRIP TO STATEN ISLAND NY over the April vacation. On a longer term, we have scheduled the SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL LAY MISSIONARY SERVICE TRIP for the third week of July and it will be based out of Camp Holy Cross in Williamsburg, Massachusetts. We will be looking for adult chaperones, and skilled tradesman to help supervise some of these projects. We are working to arrange projects such as painting interior/exterior of houses, repairing replacing porches/staircases, and replacing flooring. If you are a tradesman and can donate a few days or the full 5 days, please contact Will Rein or the Pastor. This Saturday night the parish based MYLES STANDISH KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, will hold their annual HALLOWEEN PARTY for children with intellectual disabilities. This is a huge undertaking and parishioners are welcome to stop in and see the great share their faith as missionaries. World Mission Sunday gathers support for the pastoral and evangelizing programs and needs of more than 1,150 mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and remote regions of Latin America. The funds gathered on World Mission Sunday are distributed in the pope’s name by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith—a Pontifical Mission Society. The following weekend they will be holding a TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE at all the Masses to support this work. Next Friday night is TRUNK ‘R TREAT and is held in the parking lot for about forty minutes. It starts at 6:00pm. Folks decorate their trunks and load them with candy. Kids in costume parade around the cars and fill their bags with sugar; this activity is recommended by your kid’s dentist. BC High Open House OCTOBER IS RESPECT FOR LIFE MONTH PALLIATIVE CARE & THE CATHOLIC FAITH Many people have fears and questions about their ethical obligations regarding medical care at the end of life. In this context, it is important for Catholics to know what palliative care is and how it relates to the Catholic faith. Palliative care is a specialized part of medicine that provides an extra layer of support to patients for the effective relief of pain and other symptoms caused by serious illness. It can be given alongside of curative treatment or it can be the primary focus of care when cure is not possible for people with chronic illness or for those who are in the final stages of a terminal disease. Palliative care takes a holistic approach to caring for the person and involves a team of health care professionals including physicians and nurses certified in palliative care, chaplains, social workers, and others who address the physical, spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions of a patient’s illness. Contrary to what is sometimes assumed, rather than hastening death, palliative care has been demonstrated to extend life. Historically, the Church has always carried out the work of palliative care. The multidimensional character of palliative care is fully compatible with the Church’s holistic view of human dignity and the body/soul unity of the person.
