1 Chairman’s Report 2014
On behalf of the Nelson Netball Centre Board, Jane Andrew, Julie Baxendine, Carol Cook, Julie McGrath
and Andy Vincent, it is my pleasure to present the Board Chair’s report for 2014.
The 2014 financial period this report covers, was one of transition for the Nelson Netball Centre (NNC).
After the hard decision in 2013 to change the staffing structure, a large gap was created while the
recruitment process took place. Daily operations continued, undertaken by volunteers. A large amount
of work was carried out by Jenny Mills. The Board thanks Jenny for this service and acknowledges that
the work she carried out during this period, kick started the season.
January saw the appointment of Chelsea Routhan to the newly created position of Nelson Netball Centre
Manager. Chelsea took on this permanent full time role with zeal and passion. One of the most visible
changes was the new NNC website and Facebook page. Chelsea worked tirelessly seeking additional
funding streams throughout the year. A number of procedural manuals were updated or created. The
relationships she has built and fostered, including Netball New Zealand and Netball Mainland, will be to
the Centres advantage in years to come.
In April, Kate Stiven was employed to the six month fixed term, part time role as Junior Netball Coordinator. Specialised training was carried out to allow Kate to deliver our netball programs. This included
the 1st season that a year 1-3 (5-7 year old children) program has been offered.
The Board would like to thank Chelsea, Kate and their Volunteers, for the continued delivery of our
Netball programs and competitions. This included Fast Five (Mondays) and Twilight (Wednesdays)
during the summer months. A Social league was run alongside the Premier Competition (Thursdays),
Future Ferns (Wednesdays & Saturdays) and our regular Saturday competition during the winter months.
A drop in team entries was noted this season. This was spread across our three of our four demographics.
This may be a reaction to the inability to use the Stadium in the 2013 season, as players moved to other
codes or retired. The introduction of the Year 1-3 program balanced the drop in player numbers.
We must acknowledge our greatest asset, our Volunteers.
Too numerous to list individually, we thank everyone
who shared their time to assist in the operation and
delivery of Netball to our membership. I have to single
out Marilyn Milne for her endless involvement with the
Nelson Netball community. It was rare not to see Marilyn
daily at the netball courts or assisting from home during
the season. The three sub-committees have also added
value to the season. These were the Game Officials,
Game Development and Competitions Committees. Carol
Cook’s weekly media reports (radio and print), kept the
NNC profile within our community.
One of the largest challenges faced by NNC this year was
caused by the Nelson City Councils decision to close
the Trafalgar Centre. Although not designed as an event
centre, Saxton Stadium was converted to a 2,000 seat
sports venue. Disappointment and anger was expressed
by NNC membership as modifications included covering
Court 1 with seating to allow professional sports teams
to play in Nelson. Disruption was minimised by the
resilience of the membership and the reorganising of the
competition times. We would like to thank the members
for embracing the longer days, with games in the Stadium
starting at 8.00am and the last games finishing after
5.00pm. The last round of competition saw a return to
the use of all five indoor courts, but sadly not the return of
natural lighting or viewing area from the mezzanine floor.
2
I congratulate all players that were selected to
represent the Nelson Netball Centre. NNC selected
Teams that included Under 13, Under 15, and Under
17. These grades included Development Teams. NNC
was represented at the National Under 17 Age Group
Tournament. A Tasman team represented the region
at Under 19 level. This was a combination of Nelson
and Marlborough players. It was disappointing that
there was a lack of interest to create a Tasman Senior
Team.
We appreciate the assistance we have received from
a number of funding sources, namely; Mainland
Foundation, Haven Sports Trust, New Zealand
Community Trust, Canterbury Community Trust, Pub
Charity, Trillian Trust, Pelorus Trust, KiwiSport, Sport
Tasman, Netball New Zealand, NBS, Crowe Howarth,
ASB Aquatic Centre, The Property Shoppe, Lone
Star, Jennian Homes, Richmond Office Products,
Transport and Marine Covers, Sports Therapy, Crombie
Lockwood, Mediaworks, The Copier Company, Digital
Promotions, Waimea Weekly and Pro Brands. Without
all this support we would not be able to function and
deliver netball at the level we do.
BOARD REPORT
Thank you to our Nelson Netball Centre Representative
Coaches, Managers, Selectors, Umpires and Technical
Officials. All your efforts have been appreciated and
are highlighted in the following individual reports.
I congratulate every member of the Nelson Netball
Centre that participated in the sport we all love. It
was a joy to watch our youngest, through to our
most experienced members either playing, coaching,
officiating or supporting each other during the year.
Once again I would like to offer special and sincere
thanks to all Board members for your efforts
throughout the year. Marilyn Milne stood down after
the 2014 AGM due to constitutional changes to the
Board structure. Jenny Mills and Steve Mitchell also
stood down during the term of the 2014/15 Board.
The Annual Report summarises another busy year for
Nelson Netball Centre. I hope you take the time to read
the following reports and continue your participation
with NNC in the 2015 season.
Andrew Vincent
3 Centre Manager’s Report 2014
I am delighted to present to you the 2014 Annual Report, as Nelson Netball Centre Manager. This year
presented some challenges, but also some exciting opportunities for netball in the future. It has been a
year of consolidation, imbedding the new structure and implementing the Strategic and Annual Action
Plans.
Courts and facilities have been a challenge due to closure of Trafalgar Centre late in 2013. Whilst
temporary, this created difficulties in utilising Saxton Stadium. The netball community has been very
tolerant as we have worked toward minimising the disruptions caused.
Financial Performance
The Nelson Netball Centre (NNC) achieved a financial surplus of $84,122. This result is considerably
greater than budget, mainly due to tight management of costs and a focus on funding and sponsorship.
This focus led to a growth in sponsorship and funding of 140%. This surplus is vital to provide a strong
and sustainable financial future, including the creation of an operating reserve.
NNC’s ability to deliver netball depends on a strong commercial base. It is essential to generate increased
support for the game, optimise revenues, manage costs and mitigate risks to protect the future of the
sport. Sport as a whole faces an uncertain future with many traditional funding avenues being affected.
This surplus will enable us to carefully invest in the development of netball in Nelson, and assist with
building our capability across the sport.
Website & Marketing
The new website went live in May, thanks to NBS and Digital Promotions for their support in the
development of this project. The NNC Facebook page and newsletters have also allowed increased
informative communication to members, together these mediums assists with brand awareness and
communication with our stakeholders.
Game Development
An initiative to hold a pre-season Premier grade tournament was met with unanimously positive
feedback as netball returned to Saxton Stadium at the commencement of the season.
The Centre experienced a reduction in player numbers in Saturday competitions, however there was
growth in junior netball, and twilight netball registrations. Strong support was also shown for our holiday
programmes for April and July.
Netball New Zealand launched a Junior Netball Programme, resulting in a huge increase in junior
netballers in years 1-3, registrations reached in excess of 120 girls and boys. Kate Stiven, Sarah Rankin and
many Star Helpers facilitated this new initiative.
NNC was also one of the first centres to introduce Netball Mainland’s Centre Player Development
Programme for players aged 8-15, which had 120 registrations in Term Four. Many thanks to the
volunteer coaches who facilitated these skill based sessions, we look forward to continuing the delivery
of these sessions in Term One 2015.
Tasman Trophy was re-introduced after a year off due to the flooding of Saxton Stadium, hosted by
Marlborough - the top four teams from both centres were in action, Jacks OPD made it through to the
final, however Marlborough’s SMOG took out the Championship.
Sub-Committees
Three operational sub committees - Game Officials, Game Development and Competitions were
established, thank you to all of the members for their support and expertise throughout the season. We
look forward to developing these committees further in 2015.
4
Netball Mainland introduced a ‘Super Club’ competition for
the top eight club and composite club teams from across
the Mainland Zone - Jacks OPD represented Nelson.
The competition started with
round-robin play hosted in
Marlborough and Christchurch,
and the finals were held
in Selwyn where Jacks OPD
finished third overall.
NNC were thrilled to host a
Tactix game at Saxton Stadium
on the opening weekend of
netball in May - It was great
to see the Tactix players out
watching
Saturday’s
play
also. This match was sold out
with fantastic support from
Nelsonians young and old.
Coaches
During the year we continued
offering coach development
opportunities,
facilitated
by Jennie Hooper and AniMarie Waitai. We also offered
a Coaches Club with informal
sessions for coaches to attend with members the Game
Development Committee offering advice and support
throughout the season.
CENTRE MANAGER
Netball Mainland/Tactix
Congratulations to all of our new Community Coaches:
Ani-Marie Waitai, Joanne Munro, Mandy Whiting, Robyn
Leonard, Stephanie Trevena, Chelsea Brooks, Sharleen
Lowe, Lyn Fleming, Sarah Rankin, Karla Thurlow, Marilyn
Milne.
Match & Technical Officials
Thank you to the team of dedicated Match and Technical
Officials, many of whom perform numerous duties within
these groups - to the Convenors, Draw Stewards, Mentors
and Volunteers, your time and efforts play a huge part
in the operations and delivery of netball to all levels and
competitions.
Congratulations to all the Match and Technical Officials
who have continued with their professional development
and qualifications, and to those selected to represent NNC
throughout the year, well done.

Centre Manager’s Report 2014 continued
Representative Programmes
Thank you to all of our players, coaches, managers, selectors and umpires involved in representative
programmes for the season.
Four Nelson players were selected to represent Tasman at under 19 level, combining with seven
Marlborough and one Buller representative to attend the National Championship - finishing the
tournament with a ranking of 13th.
Nelson representative teams for
the season included Under 17,
Under 17 Development, Under 15,
Under 15 Development, Under 13,
and Under 13 Development.
Nelson Netball has not had
a Senior representative side for
several years. Challenges include
the Lion Foundation National
Championship structure, the
cost involved for players and the
migration of school-leavers to
University in other cities. This will
be an area of focus in years to
come.
NNC hosted two representative
tournaments at Saxton Stadium
this season, the Nelson Age Group
Tournament and the Nelson
Development Tournament. Teams
from Buller, Golden Bay, Motueka,
and Marlborough travelled to
compete.
Thanking Our Partners
NNC remains hugely grateful to the fantastic family of sponsors and funding partners, your
investment in community netball is invaluable in helping build and maintain our organisational
capability.
Special mention to our sponsors - NBS, Crowe Howarth, The Property Shoppe, Lone Star, Jennian
Homes, Richmond Office Products, Transport and Marine Covers, Sports Therapy, ASB Aquatic
Centre, Crombie Lockwood, Mediaworks, The Copier Company, Digital Promotions, Waimea Weekly
and Pro Brands.
And our funding partners - Mainland Foundation, Haven Sports Trust, NZCT, Canterbury Community
Trust, Pub Charity, Trillian Trust, Pelorus Trust, KiwiSport, Sport Tasman, Netball New Zealand.
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank the NNC Board for their service to netball throughout 2014, also acknowledging
outgoing members Jenny Mills and Steve Mitchell who resigned during the year, thank you for your
dedication and valuable service to Nelson Netball.
NNC appreciates the continued support of Patroness Geraldine Hodgson, Life Members and Service
Award Holders. I am very appreciative for the involvement these volunteers have had, and still have
in netball.
6
To Kate Stiven, Junior Netball Coordinator 2014 season, our invaluable
volunteer base, members of our
three operational sub committees,
and Roger Ledingham, Carole
Ferguson-Leslie, Dianne Gregg and
Dianne Scott who volunteered in
the office throughout the season.
Carol Cook, Jenny Mills and Abbie
Cook publicity/game reporting,
Debbie Vincent - Twilight Netball
Co-ordinator and Marilyn Milne - Fast
Five Co-ordinator, thank you.
I would also like to acknowledge the
support of Netball Mainland, Netball
New Zealand, and many other
Centres throughout New Zealand for
their knowledge, advice and support.
I am grateful for the phenomenal
support from the Netball Community
- NNC Board, Players, Coaches,
Managers, Sports Co-ordinators,
Captains, Volunteers, Match Officials,
Technical
Officials,
Selectors,
Supporters, Sponsors and Funders.
It is my challenge now to build
on the strong foundations the
Nelson Netball community has built
throughout its rich history to foster a
culture of excellence throughout the
Centre.

Junior Netball Co-ordinator’s Report 2014
New initiatives were introduced to junior netballers during 2014, they were well supported with player
registrations and volunteer coaches who facilitated the delivery throughout the season.
Junior Netball Fun Day
The season started with a free introductory afternoon of netball to introduce young boys and girls to
the sport - it was a great success with many of these players entering the regular competitions and
programmes available to them during the season.
Future Ferns
This year NNC had 26 teams entered
for the Saturday competition and 37
teams were in action on a Wednesday.
Both competitions combined to finish
the season with a mini tournament
where teams were dressed related to
commonwealth countries - a huge effort
for closing day.
Future Ferns is also where young
umpires can learn their craft - we had 60
NBS Future Fern Umpires officiating this
season.
8
Two school holiday programmes
were run with a total of 79
participants. Both were three day
programmes covering fundamental
skill, nutrition/recovery and game
experience. I would like to thank
NBS and Pro Brands for their
contributions, along with the many
secondary school players and
volunteers who helped facilitate
these sessions.
Junior Netball Programme
Netball New Zealand launched a
junior netball programme, resulting
in a huge increase in junior netballers
in years 1 -3, registrations reached in
excess of 120 boys and girls for the
10 week programme.
Alongside the three trained Junior Co-ordinators this
programme was also well supported by volunteers, with 13
Star Helpers trained to ensure the delivery was successful.
JUNIOR NETBALL
Holiday Programmes
School Visits
In total 850 pupils participated
during school visits. Eleven schools
were part of the programme this
year, with each class enjoying five
sessions throughout the season.

Nelson Umpire’s Report 2014
Nelson Umpires had another successful year both locally and nationally.
Kate Smith officiated at New Zealand U19/U23 Age Group Championships and the Lion Foundation
National Championships in October. Kate is also a member of the Netball New Zealand - 2014 Umpire
Emerging Talent Group.
Annie Ewers-Kennedy went to New Zealand U17 Age Group Championships and Secondary Schools
Netball Championships .
A large group of Nelson Umpires officiated at the Top of the South Tournament and Nelson Age group
tournament. A number of umpires from Nelson went to South Island Secondary Schools in Invercargill,
including a group of junior umpires for the first time. Junior umpires were also in attendance at the
Junior South Island Secondary School Development Tournament, where Caitlin Reid was named in the
Talented Umpires group.
We are extremely grateful to Marilyn Milne for coaching the NBS Junior Umpires group every Saturday
and the NBS Future Fern Umpires on Wednesday afternoons. Marilyn also took on the task of draw
steward, which we are very thankful for.
A special thanks to a hard working umpire coach for 2014 Val Fitzsimmons - who has coached a number
of umpires across all levels - Centre, Zone and New Zealand. Val also took on coaching umpires for
theory, using her knowledge to help some of our umpires toward gaining their Zone theory award and
New Zealand theory.
Val complimented an Umpire Coach group that came every Saturday to help coach and improve our
umpires. We are continually working on improving and promoting umpiring in our region and as a sport
in its own right.

Report on the Financial Statements
We have audited the financial statements of the Nelson Netball Centre Incorporated on pages 13 - 17,
which comprise the statement of financial position as at 31 October 2014 and the statement of financial
performance and statement of movements in equity for the year ended, and summary of significant
accounting policies and other explanatory information
The Committee’s’ Responsibility for the Financial Statements
The Committee is responsible for the preparation of these financial statements in accordance with
generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand and for such internal control as the Committee
determine is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material
misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
Auditor’s Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We
conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (New Zealand). Those
standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain
reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures
in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including
the assessment of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In
making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation
and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate
in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the
entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies
used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates as well as evaluating the presentation of financial
statements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for
our audit opinion.
Other than in our capacity as an auditor we have no relationship with, or interests in, the Nelson Netball
Centre Incorporated.
Opinion
In our opinion, the financial statements on pages 13 - 17 present fairly, in all material respects, the financial
position of the Nelson Netball Centre Incorporated as at 31 October 2014, and its financial performance
for the year then ended in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand..
