From The Pastoral Leadership Team
The Promised Land
by Gerard Su
Numbers 13 records for us the adventures of Joshua, Caleb and other representatives of the 12 tribes of
Israel, as they embark on a reconnaissance mission to the Promised Land. The report brought back to
Moses was an optimistic one. The land was indeed flowing with milk and honey. The fruit they brought
back was proof that the land was rich and fertile. The picture painted would have been pretty impressive,
if it were not for the other 10 scouts who focused on how powerful the land’s inhabitants were, on how
large and fortified the cities were, and on how much weaker the Israelites were compared to these
‘giants’. The Israelite community, on hearing this disheartening news, complains to God once again on
how they would have been better off as oppressed slaves in Egypt. The conclusion to this chapter of
Israel’s journey is a postponement of the inheritance of God’s Promised Land. This promise however, is
fulfilled when Joshua takes over leadership from Moses.
What’s with all this talk about the Promised Land, you might ask? You might think I am referring to the
‘New Heaven and Earth’ that is promised in the book of Revelations when Jesus comes back again. But I
am looking at something much nearer on our timeline. In less than 2 months, we will be moving back to
the rebuilt chapel! Week after week, many of us have stood at the edge of the Secondary School
canteen, looking across to the massive concrete structure we have come to know as the Indoor Sports
Hall. Just like the Israelites who stood at the edge of the Promised Land and wondered what this new
land had in store for them, I’m sure many of us have wondered what this ‘promised land’, this newly
rebuilt chapel, has in store for us. Allow me to help us visualize how our Sundays will look like…
As you enter through the Primary School gates, you might notice a large sheltered area
which will allow us to drop-off/pick-up our family members on rainy days. How wonderful it is to
be able to remain dry and not worry about getting wet as you alight from the car. As you
approach the Chapel, you might bump into some of the pastoral staff, bustling in and out of the
church office (fellowship hall previously), getting ready for the Sunday Service. You are greeted
by the warm smiles of the welcome team who are eagerly waiting to usher you to a seat inside.
You take a quick peep through the glass doors that lead to the new fellowship hall and see the
Sunday School worship team leading the children in singing.
As you walk into the sanctuary, you notice that the previously carpeted floors are now
replaced with parquet flooring. The beige/brown color scheme makes you feel right at home. As
the service starts, you notice that the sound is easy on the ears. You can’t explain it, but the
acoustics seem to have improved significantly. What an awesome sight it is, to see God’s people
4
singing praises and listening to His Word together! You notice a wooden door at the back of
the sanctuary, which leads you down a corridor passing the crèche. You take a peep inside
and WOW! The crèche is more spacious than the previous ‘cry room’. As you continue along
the corridor, you finally arrive at the new restrooms, which are in a fresh zesty yellow and
lime green color. As you make your way back to the sanctuary, you hear the voices of the
choir from the Mandarin Ministry as they hold their service concurrently with us.
At the end of the service, we all proceed to the Primary School canteen for Lunch
Fellowship. The canteen seems to be ‘Same Same But Different’. The feeling is nostalgic.
Your cell group leader informs you that the cell will be gathering at one of the meeting rooms
on the 2nd floor to pray for a church member who is unwell. 2nd floor? What 2nd floor? You are
led back into the Chapel, past the crèche, and low and behold! Stairs to the 2nd floor! A short
climb leads you to the 2nd floor of the Chapel, which is divided into 4 multi-purpose rooms,
suitable for prayer meetings or other small-group sessions. After the prayer session, as you
are headed to the car park to drive home, you hear distant laughter and loud cheers. You take
a peep round the corner and see the Youths and Young Adults who are having an extended
Sunday afternoon of fellowship by playing sports at the Indoor Sports Hall. You can’t help but
smile at all the possible opportunities of sharing Christ’s love among this community of
believers known as the Living Praise Family.
I know that many of us have our individual concerns with regards to the new service timing and to the
co-sharing of the Chapel with ARPC. But friends, let’s consider all the possible opportunities God has
presented us with to share Christ’s love in a new yet familiar environment. Yes, we might have to
make some changes to our personal schedules and arrangements, but consider how good it will be
when the family of God makes such sacrifices to dwell together in spirit, faith and unity!
