Something About Our Speaker Gerri Majcin Geri Majcin, a selfless and dedicated teacher, spent 31 years teaching secondary English to young Catholic women in Chicago. Geri grew up in a Catholic community, and participated in many Catholic church novenas, special devotions and festivals near her home. When she was in the seventh grade, Geri had a special visitation of the Holy Spirit during a holy hour with her family on Holy Thursday. She felt the presence of the Lord and experienced euphoria. She developed a deeper prayer life and continued to grow in her relationship with Jesus. After graduating from college, Geri married her high school sweetheart, Rich, and they had two children. As the demands of her teaching, motherhood and church work increased, Geri found it difficult to devote herself to prayer and contemplation as she had as a young woman. When Geri and Rich’s son was four years old, he was diagnosed with Wilm’s cancer which had a 50% survival rate. Their son suffered the loss of a kidney. For two long years, the worried parents suffered with their son, but in the end, Jesus completely healed him. Looking back, Geri said she was able to care for her son and family knowing Jesus was carrying them as in the famous “Footprints in the Sand” picture. While teaching, Geri helped with a Kairos retreat. (Kairos means God’s time). As a result of her participation, Geri’s faith grew dramatically. Jesus became first in her life and in her classroom. When they retired, Rich and Geri moved to Walker, MN to relax. They both are extremely busy in their parish of St. Agnes, Bible studies and helping with grandchildren. Geri attests to the closeness of Jesus in good times and in bad. Her favorite Scripture verse is: “Everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:8)
