EMMA’s LATEST TRIUMPH
While our most illustrious member, Emma
Pooley announced in August, after winning two
silver’s in the Commonwealth Games, that she
was giving up professional cycling, that didn’t
mean she was going to relax and put her feet up.
In early September, Emma participated in the
2014
Powerman
World
Duathlon
Championships at Zofigen, Switzerland, that
took in a 10km run, followed by 150km bike
ride, followed again by a 30km run, all on hilly
courses. Emma covered the event in 6hrs 47mins
27seconds to not only win the World
Championship, but to beat the 2nd placed
Swedish competitor, Eva Nystrom, by a huge
margin of 32 minutes. She also broke the event
record by over 16 minutes. The question is:
what’s next!!
Emma intends to continue with duathlon
and triathlon competition, but has also taken on
the mantle of being a women’s representative
on the UCI’s Women’s Commission.
Congratulations Emma and we’re all
behind you, and delighted to see your name
in Banner Headlines.

RACE RESULTS
24 August – Addy1 Cycle Coaching – Wandi
121 riders faced the starter on a calm and
glorious morning, resulting in a shower of arm
warmers descending on the judges at the end of
lap 1. ‘A’, ‘B’ & ‘C’ grade bunches were all
over 30-strong, resulting in fast racing
throughout.
For once, all groups behaved themselves
by riding to the typed schedule, and the only
‘incident’ involved Bruce Abbott who fell in
the final 500m of ‘C’ grade, and ended up with
a few bruises and grazing. However, there was
a disturbing report by a driver who did a Uturn to report that he’d only just missed 2
riders who had switched to the wrong side of
the road on one of the final corners as he
headed towards them. He was quite calm about
the issue, and didn’t rant & rave, but the
incident shook him up. So, please use your
heads, for ending up flattened and pinned to
the front of a car or truck won’t do you or the
club much good!
‘A’ grade was its usual ebullient self,
with a 5-strong break gaining 30seconds on the
first lap. Tony Anderson, Jon Gregg, Julian
Lowes, Wayne Thomson and Patrick Hayburn
were still out front until 4 laps to go, but apart
from Tony Anderson, were then absorbed. It
was then the turn of Craig Pennell who joined
Tony with 4 to go but they were steadily
wheeled in, only for Jon Gregg and Jason
Cawthorne to take their place. They held the
lead to finish in that order, some 20seconds
ahead of winner of the bunch sprint, Doug
Stewart, who was closely followed over the
line by 4th placed Wayne Thomson, Ian
Gregory, Julian Lowes, Sam Smith and another
19 contestants.
‘B’ Grade riders were also keen to see
action, and at the end of the 2nd lap Reg
Edwards, Peter Mills and Merv Byfield passed
the start point with smiles on their faces and a
15 second lead. That lead had increased by a
further 5 seconds at the end of the following
circuit, but their joyride came to an end with 5
laps to go. The event came down to a mass
bunch sprint that spread the width of the road
and into the hard shoulder lane. Brett Parkes
took the honours, just ahead of Peter
Hammond, Ray Lawrie, Paul Hearne, Tony
Mott, Tim Mollison and 24 other survivors.
Thirty-seven ‘C’ grade riders adopted
their usual calm approach by largely
sticking together at a rapid pace. Steve Ryan
with a 5second lead with 4 laps to go
appeared to be the only one to show
initiative, but of course, that’s the view
from the line where only a snapshot is
possible. In the sprint, Brett Clapham called
on his sprinting ability to record a win of
over a length, when he hedged out Michael
Morton and John Liso for the three podium
places. Steve Ryan was 4th, while Peter
Pang was pleased to record a place in the
first five finishers, just ahead of Peter
Neuzerling and Brett Craig.
‘D’ Grade was only 10-srong but that
didn’t lead to complacency, and a lap or so
after the start, Greg Smith and Natalie
Roberts decided to ride away from their
compatriots, and led the bunch for the rest
of the race. The win went to ‘Womankind’
as Natalie sprinted strongly over the final
150metres to beat Greg into 2nd place by a
few metres, while Margaret Gollagher beat
Sean Yeates when taking 4th place.
‘E’ grade started with 6 riders, but
neither Alan Taylor nor Kevin Hart had
enough miles in their legs to pose a threat.
Oldest man in the race, 85-year old Brian
Kennedy, battled on gamely after his racing
lay-off, and was pleased to finish the event.
In a two-up sprint, Derek Mayall triumphed
over Lauri Mucciarone, with Denis
Robinson finishing 2mins 30secs behind in
3rd place.

31 August – WCMCC Club Road Age
Division Championships
106 nominations was the best field ever for a
club championship – though it was
disappointing to see that four of the 12 who
nominated in the 35-39 year division, and four
of the seven in the women’s race were non-
starters. However, the temperature was
comfortable and there was hardly a breath
of wind. Despite a damp road for the early
starters, surprisingly, only one rider, Allan
McDonald, suffered a puncture.
As usual, we don’t give a blow for
blow report on the championships, but the
rides of Jon Gregg and Greg Jones in the
40-44 year age group were worthy of
mention as they rode most of their 88km
race in tandem, and put about 6 minutes into
their compatriots. Brian Kennedy was the
oldest rider in the race and he was a
deserving winner of his ‘gold’ in the 80-84
year age group.

21 September – Momentum Wealth, Gr
Scratch – Dog Hill, Baldivis
A very damp day with gusty winds, though
thankfully the forecast 100 kmh blasts
didn’t appear. Only brave 68 riders ventured
out, and in ‘A’ grade of the 25 starters, eight
failed to finish. As a concession, all races
were reduced by one lap. Because my notes
disintegrated in the rain – and as this was

AVCC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS –
Perth, September 26-29th 2014
Thanks everyone for your attendance and help
during the national titles. All reports were
positive, though afraid that we weren’t able to
turn off the awful weather for the Time Trials,
nor the showers for the criteriums and road
race. Thanks also to ‘Norm’ and his staff at the
Chidlow Tavern for putting on the presentation
lunch following the Road Races.
All results will be found on the web
pages – but congratulations to all the gold,
silver and bronze medallists. A special
congrats to Sam Smith for taking out the
prestigious Mockridge Cup award for best on
time standard in the time trial, and also to Jon
Gregg for an amazing 44kph ride in appalling
conditions, and to Lorna Henson for being the
fastest woman rider. It was also great to see
Leila Spurgeon take out the award judged by
the race referees for the Bill Long Shield for
the most meritorious performance during the
championships.
A special thanks to the marshals and
others who stood in the rain for hours to ensure
the championships was a success.
5 October – Gr. Scratch Neerabup
For the third weekend in a run, the 63 riders
who started at Neerabup were to face appalling
conditions, with high blustery winds and icy
cold rain. Perhaps the few puncture victims
were fortunate in having premature finishes,
for there were a number of people at the finish
who looked as if they had suffered. No record
times today, and the prepared lap schedule was
way out of kilter.
Perhaps ride of the day was the effort of
Andrew Patterson who time trialled for much
of ‘A’ grades 90km race. Riding away on lap 2
of the 12 laps, he was only caught with 5 laps
to go even though there were attempts by Ian
Lyne and by Michael Tapscott and Magnus
Rudisele to close the gap. Just before the catch,
the bunch split and the final laps saw a small
group hold onto a lead of over a minute by the
bell. In the hard fight into the wind at the
finish, it was Doug Stewart who proved too
strong for 2nd placed Patrick Hayburn with
Michael Tapscott finishing 7 secs behind in 3rd
place. Keith Winch was a further 4 seconds
behind. There were only 8 finishers out of the
16 who started the event.
The ‘B’ graders kept to the time
schedule for three laps before the elements
began to take effect on the lap times.
However, the hard conditions didn’t prevent
some epic attempts to split the field, and Ian
Turner was an early aggressor, as were
Norm Shattock and Ray Lawrie. The coupe
de grace came with a break by Antony
Bourn and Julian Chipper with three to go.
A lap later they led by 1min 5secs, a lead
that had stretched to 1min 30secs at the bell
and 45secs at the finish. Antony Bourn
proved the fastest over the final 150metres
or so. Ray Lawrie led in the bunch, 1min
40secs behind, with Anthony Mateljan,
Darin Dunstan, Carl Skinner, Jessica
Huston and 4 others in close contention.
‘C’ grade saw the group stay close
together – perhaps a wise decision under the
conditions. This, of course, played into the
hands of the sprinters – though, as with
other groups, the speed over the final couple
of hundred metres could hardly have been
classed as sprinting but rather as survival
into the wind. Strongman of the bunch was
Michael Morton who beat John Liso to the
line, with Dale Wright finishing a few
metres behind in 3rd place. Keith Hickey
placed 4th, while Jaimie Bell, Steve Ryan,
Bob Addy, Simon O’Leary and Paul Shields
recorded the same time.
‘D’ grade started with 5 riders, but that
number was depleted by one when Bill
Stibbs punctured early in the race. Bob
Stephens also called it a day with a lap to
go, leaving the winning move to be
contested by Wayne Gordon, Daniel Gentili
and Leila Spurgeon. Daniel proved best on
the day and crossed just ahead of Leila who
had ridden strongly throughout the race, and
Wayne Gordon in 3rd.
‘E’ grade riding 6 laps saw only two
competitors Denis Robinson and Laurie
Mucciarone. They doggedly fought the
elements, and after a lap or so they parted
ways and time trialled to the finish, with
first place going to Laurie Mucciarone.

12 October – 69 km (8 laps) Autostrada
Group Handicap
The last event of the road season attracted 88
riders who rode under cloudy skies and a
breeze that rose and subsided periodically
throughout the morning. With both grade and
overall prizes, plus the finalised points
competition prizes and trophies on show, it
proved a fitting climax to an excellent season.
With 25 minutes separating scratch from
limit and 7 minutes separating each of the four
groups, it was a story of all stops out.
However, on the day, though the ‘A’ grade
group appeared to ride hard, they never seemed
to rise to the occasion to combat the fast and
steady pace of ‘C’ and ‘B’ grades. The latter
were lapping at between 12.00mins and 12m
25secs, ‘C’ grade at between 13m.00secs and
13m 20secs, while ‘A’ grade who needed to
pull back at least 1m 45secs a lap on ‘C’ grade
found themselves well behind schedule after
only a few laps into the race. ‘B’ grade,
however, were within striking distance of ‘C’
as they entered the final lap, but at the finish it
was ‘C’ grade that triumphed by about half-a
minute, with ‘A’ grade over 5 minutes behind,
and the small ‘D’ graders led in by Dave
Walker another few minutes behind.
The overall winner was Paul Shields who
just edged out Bob Addy on the line.
‘E’ grade started and finished with
three riders, and riding over 5 laps the
winner was Derek Mayall, with Laurie
Muccarione 2nd some 2m 5secs behind,
while Kevin Hart completed the activities of
the trio.
The fight for honours in ‘B’ grade went
to Anthony Bourn who pipped Ray Lawrie
by a mere few cms, while in ‘A’ grade it
was Gary Wright who scored a clear victory
over Ian Gregory, Steve Beales and Doug
Stewart.
The presentations were accompanied by
a feast of Subway fare and biscuits, but
these items twere quickly demolished.
There was also a special presentation of a
signed tribute to Bob Addy on the occasion
of his retirement, after a long and illustrious
racing career.
