TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“WORLD MISSION SUNDAY”
DEAR PARISHIONERS:
MISSION PRAYER
This Sunday is World Mission Sunday. It is easy for us to be
casual about this theme but the Church wants us to realize there
is an urgency about mission work and evangelization. Pope
Emeritus Benedict 16 spoke to the Thirteenth Synod of Bishops
in Oct 2012 on the New Evangelization: “The Church exists to
evangelize. Faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ’s command, his
disciples went out to the whole world to announce the Good
News, spreading Christian communities everywhere.”
With the statement that the Church exists “to evangelize“, we get
the strong message that working at evangelization is not an option
for any of us in the Church.
How do we evangelize effectively? Some of us might be able to
visit another country where the faith communities need some
help. We can share our time, talent and treasure with them as the
Holy Spirit directs us.
Others are not able to have a direct involvement with people in a
different area or different country; this is where we support other
faith communities or missionaries by our participation in the
World Mission program. Our prayers, our acts of self-denial and
our offering of financial help assist those on the front lines. We
remember that St. Therese of Lisieux is the co-patron of missions
– she never left her cloistered convent yet she won over millions
of souls over to Jesus. Her little way of doing small things well
out of love of Jesus brings grace upon grace to souls all over the
world.
That is the ultimate goal of evangelization: sharing with others the
person, Jesus Christ. Pope Emeritus Benedict put it this way: “In
every time and place, evangelization always has as its starting
and finishing points Jesus Christ, the Son of God (cf. Mk 1:1);
and the Crucifix is the supremely distinctive sign of him who
announces the Gospel: a sign of love and peace, a call to
conversion and reconciliation.”
There is the call as well from the corporal works of mercy to feed
the hungry and care for the sick. This too is part of evangelization.
To do these acts of kindness out of love must be our primary
motivation. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago said” we will
never evangelize what we do not love”
May each of us listen to the Holy Spirit to discern how to support
with love the missionary work of the Church. May the Blessed
Virgin Mary smooth the path for each person in the world to the
glory and grace of her Son, Jesus Christ.
Fr. Galvon

STEW ARDSHIP REFLECTION
In today’s Gospel we hear proclaim ed a profound teaching
by Jesus on stewardship. W hat belongs to Caesar? W hat
belongs to God? Christian stewards recognize that
everything they have belongs to God. God created them ,
and God has claim s on every part of their existence. They
also realize that the sovereign is an institution whose
nature and purpose is to prom ote the com m on good and
protect the welfare of its citizenry. As long as it
accom plishes this m ission while treating every single
person with deep respect, justice and com passion, it m erits
the steward’s support and cooperation. Christian stewards
know what belongs to the Lord, and they are better citizens
when they live their lives according to His Gospel.

Cantemos la grandeza del Señor
El evangelio de hoy dice que los fariseos se reúnen en consejo
para deliberar cóm o ponerle una tram pa a Jesús. No van
