SISTER PARISH UPDATE

Our travelers have arrived home safely. There
is much to share so keep watching for
information over the upcoming weeks. Plans
are already being made for the next trip in
early 2015.
There is good news from St. Genevieve relating to today's
proverb. The engineering firm has been chosen to rebuild
the church. Construction is expected to begin next month.
It has been a long process and even baby steps are
encouraging.
The next meeting of the Sister Parish Committee is on
Monday, October 20, at 6:30 in the Franciscan Center.

COMMUNAL ANOINTING
We invite you to celebrate communal anointing with us at
the weekend Masses on November 8/9. We invite and
encourage anyone who is seriously ill, with prolonged or
chronic illness or disease (heart, cancer, respiratory
ailments, diabetes, etc.), those with the disease of
alcoholism or other addictions; those who suffer from
mental illness and disorders; anyone facing exploratory
surgery with its uncertainty and anxiety and those
experiencing aging with its limitations, its fears and
isolation together with caregivers and family to join us at
any of those weekend Masses.
Today We Prayed For: all ministers of the news of
God’s great love – in our community, the city of Hartford
and the world.

May the Lord give you peace.
I thank you for your support of the Ministry Fair last weekend. It
was a great event and an opportunity to see so much of the
ministry that is happening here! I thank Trudi for coordinating
the event, and as she has said - “it takes a village” - so thanks
again to everyone for taking the time to assist or visit the fair!
This weekend the church invites us to pray for the mission of the
church in the world. We know that there is a good deal of
brokenness in the human experience of the world and the church.
We pray for the embodiment of the mission of the Gospel which
nurtures communion with all, calls for just relationships, and for
the discernment to realize the variety of cultural and religious
experiences throughout the world. We hear the words of Jesus in
John’s Gospel - “in my Father’s house there are many dwelling
places” - and realize the multitude of experiences of God’s
presence.
This has been an exciting week as we have heard of the interim
report from the Synod of Bishops in Rome. Actually, there has
not been this much energy around a Bishop’s gathering in Rome
since the Second Vatican Council. The report grounds itself in the
social-cultural contexts of modern living, focuses the mission on
the Gospel, and considers major issues for the church. The issues
raised are: cohabiting couples and a shift away from the
language of sin to a recognition of the potential for the church to
assist these couples on their journey in Christ; the church’s
mission to wounded families; nurturing couples and family life;
“homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian
Community; and procreation”. The vocabulary change alone is
significant. If you have not had a chance to look at the readings
for Mass this week, I invite you to pray with them in relationship
to the presence and activity of the Spirit at the Synod. (Check
mailto:http://www.usccb.org for the readings.) They provide a
wonderful direction for the Bishops’ considerations. I ask your
continued prayer for the work of the Synod as they begin the
year-long preparation for the conclusion of their reflections.
I thank our Open Hearts Ministry for hosting the film, Taking a
Chance on God, last weekend. We were fortunate to have the
producer/director of the work, Brendan Fay, with us. I thank all
who were able to attend. I also thank Pat Curtis for assisting in
the project.

The bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us,

and sends them out in His service. Being sent on a
mission is a consequence of being disciples.

The Secular Franciscan Order Meeting
Our Haiti travelers have returned and have stories to tell. I look
forward to catching up with them soon. I thank you for your
prayers as they traveled.

give - prayer- ministry- financial. I am most grateful.

A group of parishioners and friends gather once a month
at the Urban Ministry Center to discuss works of fiction

Carole P. Kunstadt’s process reveals how language
becomes visual through re-interpretation. Her images
have a meditative quality. Though the words may not be
visible, the spiritual essence of the sacred texts remains.
The panel discussion includes the artist, Sacred Harp
singer Ellen Lueck, Yale University music Professor Ian
Quinn Ph.D., and St. Patrick-St. Anthony Director of Music
ad musician Gabriel Löfvall.
Sacred Harp is a uniquely American tradition that brings
communities together to sing four-part hymns and
anthems. The choirs of St. Patrick-St. Anthony, panel
members and audience members all participate in this
concert.

LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
A special collection will be taken up next weekend,
October 25/26, for the benefit of St. Joseph’s
Residence in Enfield. The Little Sisters of the Poor will be
in attendance at all of the Masses and look forward to
meeting parishioners. The Little Sisters of the Poor have
worked with the elderly poor in Enfield and New Haven
since 1901. Your generosity will assist the Little Sisters
of the Poor to continue to provide care for the elderly
poor.

SPIRITUALITY AND MORALITY: The Role of Prayer in the Moral Life
Thursday, October 23, 6:30—9:00 p.m.
Does it make a difference to the moral life if you are a person of prayer? In the
pre‐Vatican II manuals of moral theology, prayer was treated largely as an obligation in
the moral life; for example, a person had to attend mass every Sunday under pain of sin.
The relationship between the moral life and the spiritual life was viewed in terms of
duties coupled with penalties if one failed to perform one’s duties. Can we speak in
terms other than obligation when discussing the relationship of spirituality and
morality? This presentation will explore the various ways that our prayer life and our
moral experience enrich each other.

where he continues to teach theological ethics.
REEL FAITH: The Jewish Cardinal
Tuesday, October 28, 6:30—8:30 p.m.
“The Jewish Cardinal” film accurately describes a real man, Jean‐Marie Lustiger, the
Paris‐born son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, who maintained his Jewish identity
even after converting to Catholicism at a young age and later joining the priesthood.
Quickly rising within the ranks of the Church, he was appointed Archbishop of Paris
by Pope John Paul II, and then made a Cardinal. The movie keeps a steady focus on
the strange way this “man of God and of contradictions” insists on being both Jewish
and Catholic, and sometimes being a bridge between the two.
Film is unrated; 1 hour and 36 minutes in length, with subtitles.
