Founder Viol.a Tyl;ar Founder Fannie Pattie Founder Pearl Neal Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. was founded on January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. by five collegiate women we call our Five Pearls. Zeta predicates herself on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. Zeta was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult and auxiliary groups-the Amicae, Archonette, Pearlettes, and Amicettes; and to be constitutionally bound to a brother group, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The sorority was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations-to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Zeta's national and local service and leadership programs include the National Education Foundation, Stork Nest, Z-HOPE and ZOL. Although these are the signature programs of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., the sorority prides itself on developing and participating in various community outreach programs across the country. Well-known for its uniqueness and high spirit, the Plainfield Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorortty, Inc. prides itself on building on the founelation of its founders. Embracing the Zeta legacy enables these women to build on past fraditions of service, education, and commurity outreach. Collegiate Chapters ta Omicron Zeta serves as the advising raduate chapter to two collegiate chapters: eta Lambda (Kean University) and Gamma appa (Rutgers University-New Bruns·ck). jrhe chapter was chartered on March 17, 1972 ~oserve the city of Plainfield and its surroundmg communities. The charter line consisted of IMinnie R. Gray, Elizabeth Thompson, Lula Frawford, Jacqueline White, Evelyn Crawford and Marie Lattimore. Since its inception, Eta pmicron Zeta has initiated numerous programs that promote service, empowerment, f~d scholarship. As a result, our service area fxpanded to include Union, Somerset and •iddlesex counties. here is one active Archonette group uner the advisement of Eta Omicron Zeta. is chapter is located at Plainfield High chool. Archonettes Amicae I I ~he Adopt-a-Family program, service to the Plainfield Senior Center, Adopt-A-Family, women's conferences, health fairs, the March ~f Dimes campaign, and voter registration ~rives are just a few examples of the good rrork Eta Omicron Zeta provides for the comhmnity. Through its annual scholarship ~uncheon, the chapter eases the way for deerving high school seniors and college stuents to afford college by granting thousands f dollars in scholarship funds annually.
