I hope that you enjoy the second issue of the “Oh So Sweet” UG Newsletter. The Undergraduates in the State of Georgia are doing a terrific job representing Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. This issue include activities from October and November. They are participating in community activities in their surrounding areas and on their campuses. They are keeping the founding principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. alive. The undergraduates are the future of our beloved sorority. We should encourage them and support them in all that they do. This will allow them to have a smooth transition into the graduate chapters. Sisterly, Soror Kina Davis “A New Foundation Built on Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood” “OH SO SWEET” UG NEWSLETTER Page 2 Pink Day For Iota Tau-Celebrate AASU 2011 “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now, We’re on the Move!” On October 20, 2011, the ladies of the Iota Tau Chapter at Armstrong Atlantic State University participated in Armstrong Celebrate, a day of school spirit and fun, on campus from noon to 4pm. Having a booth themed towards Breast Cancer awareness, we fundraised for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of Breast Cancer research. Our booth also included a bake sale of chocolate chip and sugar cookies, along with vanilla and strawberry cupcakes with pink icing all sold at fifty cents apiece. There were also drawings for whole cakes, gift cards and other prizes throughout the day for people who donated. Sorors Lovia Lartey, Shanice King, and Imani Agusma also performed a step and chant highlighting their love for their school and Zeta. “A girl came up to me the next day and said she really enjoyed the step. I think everyone was impressed” said Soror Latey. The whole chapter wore pink ribbons for Breast Cancer, worked the booth, as well as participated in the other wonderful events the festival had to offer. It was a fun yet informative event that we will do again in the future. Page 3 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 “Opulent and Always ON Point in October”-Omicron Nu The ladies of Omicron Nu at the University of West Georgia had a busy month that exemplified why they are the Opulent and always ON point ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. This dynamic chapter began their month competing in their 2011 homecoming show on October 1. The ladies also competed in the 2011 Georgia Tech Homecoming Show on October 21. The ladies did very well as they presented “Salon 1920.” Omicron Nu also held a Penny Wars competition the week of October 10-14. During this week the ladies collected monetary donations with hopes of raising money for March for Babies. The chapter successfully met their goal and was very thankful for the support of the UWG community. On October 12th, the chapter enjoyed a fun evening of arts and crafts with some of the young ladies at UWG. The ladies brought in timeless photos to share with the group and then ended the night conversing and decorating beautiful frames. It was a great night! On October 17th, the ladies hosted a Breast cancer Awareness program as a part of the Southeastern Region Undergraduate Signature Program. Peer educators from the UWG Health Services came in and educated the attendees on how to check for lumps that could be cancerous and about the many people that breast cancer can affect. The program was very educational and all attendees expressed a sense of gratitude for their new knowledge. Lastly, on October 28th, the ladies participated in UWG’s annual Safe Treat which is a safe alternative for local children to Trick or Treat. Many of the parents and children were impressed as Zetas helped children to count money in order to earn candy. It was a fun night for all. October was a very busy month for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc on the University of West Georgia Campus but needless to say it was a very successful month as well. The Omicron Nu chapter also kicked off their “Say Yes to the Dress: Prom edition” program and is collecting dresses, shoes, and accessories to be donated to young teens in need at a local High school for prom. Please email the chapter at [email protected] if you wish to help! “Georgia undergraduates Continues to Handle The Business of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.” “OH SO SWEET” UG NEWSLETTER Page 4 Mu Mu Chapter Supports Breast Cancer Awareness On Thursday, October 13, 2011 the Mu Mu Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at Georgia Southwestern State University co-sponsored PINK DAY with the ladies of SUAVE. The sorors asked everyone to wear PINK in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The sorors set up a table in the MSC Bookstore Hallway. The Sorors passed out information on Breast Cancer, Self-Breast Exam Cards, stickers, cupcakes, and strawberry cake. The sorors and the ladies of SUAVE also gave away a Breast Cancer Awareness Basket. While walking across the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University, all you could see was PINK! “Georgia Undergraduates Continue to focus on Zetas Helping Others to Excel (Z-HOPE)!” Page 5 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 Fall Festival for Valdosta, GA Community - Alpha Theta “Georgia Undergraduates During the month of October the Alpha Theta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. teamed up with their sponsoring graduate chapter, Zeta Sigma Zeta, to put on a Fall Festival for the Valdosta community. Alpha Theta invited other VSU Greeks to participate in the annual event and the groups offered children activities ranging from face and nail painting to musical chairs and cake walk ALL free of charge. Additionally, in celebration of Halloween, children were encouraged to wear costumes and received candy trick-or-treat style at each table. Overall, the event was a success! Remaining Second To None!” “OH SO SWEET” UG NEWSLETTER Page 6 The Braxtons Visit Spelman College-Beta Iota Chapter Soror Traci Braxton and Soror Towanda Braxton, along with their sisters Tamar & Trina, visited Spelman College on October 19, 2011. The sisters were on campus to promote Season 2 of their WEtv hit television show "Braxton Family Values." Soror Arienne Jones and Soror Jasmine Williams welcomed them to Spelman College on behalf of the Beta Iota chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. “Scholarship, Service, Sister Love, and Finer Womanhood” VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 Page 7 Focusing On The Future Although Omicron Nu works with teens year-round as mentors for Central High School in Carrollton, GA through our “Ladies of the Dove” mentoring program, this month we focused our efforts on supporting these teens in dealing with many of the problems they face daily in the harsh and challenging world. During the month of November, the Omicron Nu chapter held two “Ladies of the Dove” mentoring sessions; the first spotlighted the importance of self-esteem and anti- bullying. Many of the young women admitted to playing some role in bullying at one point but learned how they could best avoid future situations. In our second session, we discussed the importance of safe dating and healthy choices, including abstinence. Again, we received great feedback from the young ladies about how they plan to make better choices in their futures and we all promised that we would follow up again with this topic due to the amount of information and the advice the girls wanted to hear from us. We all were very happy when one of the mentees expressed how more mature she felt when she attended these sessions with us. Not only have we reached out to the young women at Central High School, but during the month of November we also participated in a Thanksgiving dinner Cook off benefit for the Foundation Group Home in Bremen, GA. During the benefit, we had the opportunity to talk to the young teen women who lived in the group home, one on one. During our intimate discussions, we were able to learn a little more about them, and they learned a little more about us as well, all while eating donated plates of food that we helped to prepare. We know that our work is not done and we look forward to our future sessions and experiences with our mentees as well as helping other young women make healthy choices for their lives. The purpose of the Vision Board Event was to target the underclassmen and give them goal setting advice on time management, financial planning, career setting, and by maintaining a healthy college lifestyle! “When Zeta Calls, we will answer one and all!” Page 8 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 Page 9 Kappa Epsilon Continues……... On November 12th, 2011 Sorors Sin’Quetta Tanner and Tiffni Williams participated in the “100 TEENS IN JEANS” Praise Party Event held at Allen Temple located in Columbus, Georgia, by performing a praise step during the church services! On November 18, 2011, the ZETAS showed Greek Unity by attending the Neophyte Showcase for the new Fall 2K11 members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated! The event was lovely and enjoyable! Zeta Phi Beta Supports World Aids Day Undergraduates Award—77th Southeastern Regional Conference I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Undergraduate Chapters from the GREAT State of Georgia that attended the 77th Southeastern Regional Conference. The undergraduates participated in business sessions, workshops, and the awards banquet. Some of our undergraduate members and chapters received awards at the conference.
