Dear Parishioners,
The word “love” is perhaps the most used in our day to day life and in a variety of settings. From the use of this word, it
would seem as if there was only one meaning to it, but that is not really the case. When someone says “I love my spouse”, this
certainly has a different meaning than “I love my car”. But in English, we indiscriminately use the word “love” regardless of the
setting or context. However, from the ancient Greek, we learn that what we have translated by “love” comes from different Greek
words, which were used according to different circumstances. These Greek words are the following: eros, philia, and agape. All
these three have been translated in English as “love”. Eros means the love between a man and a woman; Philia means friendship;
and agape means care and concern for the other. The biblical use of the word “love” almost always means the latter. It comes out
clearly, for example, in the conversation between the Lord Jesus and Peter, after the resurrection. Jesus asked Peter: “Do you
“agape” me?” Peter answered: “Yes, Lord, you know that I “philia” you.” And, the question was asked three times. Apparently,
Peter did not get it.
Today’s Gospel speaks of love of God and love of neighbor, but in the sense of agape. And the Lord concludes “the whole
law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” The term “the law and the prophets” means scriptures, and at the time
of Jesus it referred to Old Testament. Jesus was tested yet again by the Pharisees as to which one was the greatest commandment.
The Lord pointed out that we have to “agape” God, and we have to “agape” our neighbor. The love of God and the love of neighbor
were two separate commandments, but Jesus put them together to show that we cannot love God without showing care and concern
for others, just as we cannot love our neighbor without being totally committed to God with our whole being (heart, soul, and mind).
One leads to the other. That’s the message of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But how is this translated in the day to day life? How do we really love (agape) our neighbor? How do we show care and
concern for the other? The first reading from the book of Exodus gives us part of the answer: “You shall not molest or oppress an
alien or an immigrant.” How do we treat immigrants in our midst, especially new-comers and/or undocumented? If we are truly
Christians, people who love God, then the immigration status of a person should not count, because all deserve our care and concern.
“You shall not wrong any widow or orphan.” In the biblical language, “widow and orphan” means poor in general. This is
because widows and orphans in the ancient times did not have anyone to provide for them. They relied mostly on the providential
care of God, and they were known as friends of God. The care and concern we show for the poor, and the ways in which we assist
them, is a translation of love for neighbor. Whether we assist a poor directly or through a charity, it is a good exercise of putting in
practice the commandment of love. There are many other ways in which we show concrete love for others.
But we have also to be mindful of the fact that neighbor does not necessarily mean stranger. Even people with whom we
are familiar such as spouse, children, friends, co-workers, classmates, etc. they all deserve our love in the sense of agape. May the
blessings of Almighty God be upon you always.

Dear Parishioners,
I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of our pastor Msgr. McGuirl, to thank all of you the good people of Our
Lady of Mercy for your love and support at the passing of our beloved priest Fr. John Cremins. Even though it was in the middle of
the week, with little notice, many of you found time to come either to the funeral parlor or to the church to pray for the repose of the
soul of Fr. John and for the consolation of his family. We had a beautiful celebration at the vigil Mass with two of our auxiliary
bishops present, and a good send off at the funeral Mass on Saturday. To all who have played a minor or a major role, please, find in
these lines the gratitude of your priests here at Our Lady of Mercy. Certainly the family of Fr. John also was pleased to see how
much you loved him. We continue to pray for the soul of Fr. John and for his family, especially his mother who will be turning 105
soon. May Fr. John rest in the peace of Christ, whom he served here on earth as a priest. God bless you all.

ALL SAINTS DAY
Saturday, November 1, is the Feast of All Saints. This year, it
is not a holyday of obligation but we will be celebrating the
liturgy for the feast at the 8:30 AM Mass. We encourage you
to join us for that Mass.
CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be held today, Sunday
October 26. It will not be held next Sunday, November 2 as we
are celebrating our annual All Souls Day Parish Remembrance
liturgy at the 10:00 AM Mass that day (please see the Parish
All Souls Remembrance Mass message in this bulletin). All
children are invited to join our catechists in the Parish Hall to
hear the Sunday readings at their level of understanding. We
are still looking for some of our 7th graders (you will get
Confirmation service time) to help us as puppeteers so we can
make the gospel stories come alive for our younger children. If
you are interested in helping as a puppeteer, please call Sue
Karcher in the Religious Education Office at 718-261-6285.
We are planning a Family Mass for Sunday, November 16.

ADVANCE NOTICE
THANKSGIVING CLOTHING DRIVE
As we did at Thanksgiving time last year and also during Lent,
we are again conducting a Clothing Drive in conjunction with
Blessed Sacrament Parish in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn. Since
Hurricane Sandy hit the New York area in 2012, one of our
faithful parishioners, Mrs. Susan McCabe, has been bringing
clothing donated by our parishioners to Blessed Sacrament on a
weekly basis. The people there are extremely grateful for all of
the assistance we have provided and they have received.
On Saturday, November 22, we will be conducting our
Thanksgiving Clothing Drive. We will be renting a U-Haul
truck for the day to bring the used clothing to Blessed
Sacrament. The truck will be in front of the Church from 10:00
AM until 12:00 PM to collect clean clothing in good condition.
Take time to do some Fall Cleaning of your closets and share
your unused or outgrown clothing with the needy at Blessed
Sacrament Parish. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
PARISH ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCE MASS
Each year, on All Souls Day, we celebrate a special candlelight
Mass at which we make special remembrance, by name, of all
those parishioners who died during the past year. All the
names are inscribed in the “Book of the Dead,” which will be
enshrined in a special prominent place near the altar during the
Mass, and the names will be called solemnly during the liturgy.
Since All Souls Day, November 2, falls on a Sunday this year,
we will celebrate this special liturgy at the 10:00 AM Mass that
day. A simple Coffee Hour will be held in the Parish Hall after
Mass.
Letters of invitation to the Mass will be sent to all families who
have had a family member or loved one buried from OLM this
year. If you would like to include the name of a family
member or loved one who was not buried from OLM, please
notify the Rectory office PRIOR TO OCTOBER 31.

9:00 AM for our annual Thanksgiving Day Family Mass. As a
community, let us gather to give thanks to God for all of the
abundant gifts and blessings He has bestowed on us and our
families. To help us better serve those who come to us for
help, we ask that you bring a food or monetary donation to
assist our Food Pantry and Human Services outreach. Have a
blessed Thanksgiving Day!
HELP KEEP OUR FOOD PANTRY
SHELVES STOCKED
As the weather has become cooler, we’ve seen a considerable
increase in the number of people who have come to our Food
Pantry for help. Our shelves are a bit bare this week and we
can really use your help to re-stock the following items:
Parmalat milk, cereal, jelly, tuna, canned fruit, canned
vegetables, jar tomato sauce, canned hams, plain rice, coffee
and tea (regular/decaf/instant), fruit juices, bottled water,
cookies/snacks, candy, popcorn, mayonnaise, mustard,
shampoo, toothpaste, soap, individually wrapped toilet paper,
paper towels, paper napkins, and facial tissues. A continued
helpful hint – watch for the weekly specials at our local
supermarkets. Taking advantage of them is a great way to help
our Food Pantry. If everyone donated just one item each week,
we would be able to adequately maintain our Food Pantry
inventory. As always, many, many thanks for your continued
generosity to our Food Pantry ministry – it is very much
appreciated. Please watch for our Thanksgiving Food Flyer
which will be in the bulletin next week. We will be asking for
food donations for the Thanksgiving meal baskets that we will
provide for approximately 35 needy families.
LEFTOVER HALLOWEEN CANDY
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Did you celebrate your 25th, 50th or any other “significant”
wedding anniversary in the years 2013 or 2014? We will be
having our parish wedding anniversary celebration at the 10:00
AM Mass on Sunday, November 23, 2014. Any couple who
would like to renew wedding vows at that Mass is asked to
notify the Rectory Office as soon as possible and submit your
names, phone number and the number of years you are
celebrating. Couples celebrating a 25th or 50th anniversary
will receive a scroll. The Mass will be followed by a reception
in the Parish Hall. All parishioners are welcome to attend.
If you have any candy or other goodies left after the trick-ortreaters have come and gone on Halloween, please consider
donating it to our Food Pantry. We can use your donations to
share the holidays with our needy neighbors by providing them
with some sweet treats.
CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2014
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred on our
current 8th grade Confirmation candidates on Friday, November
14, 2014 at 5:00 PM by retired Auxiliary Bishop Guy
Sansaricq. Please continue to pray for the Confirmation
candidates as they continue to prepare to receive the sacrament.

CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2015
The 7th Graders in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Academy and
our CCD Program who are planning to receive the Sacrament
of Confirmation in the Fall of 2015 have begun their year-long
program preparing them for the reception of the sacrament.
Slips of paper with the names of next year’s candidates for the
Sacrament of Confirmation are in baskets at the doors of the
Church. Please take a name and pray for that young person
throughout the coming year.
