Dear Parishioners:
Again this Sunday the Gospel reading is the narrative of one of Our Lord's Parables taken from St.
Matthew's Gospel. We hear the parables so often throughout the year that there is tendency for all of us to
view them as we might view Aesop's Tales - lovely little stories that have a enlightening message. However
unlike Aesop's Tales or even Grimm's Fairy Tales, in which the forces of good win over the forces of evil,
nothing is really demanded of the reader. In contrast the Parables demand a reaction and a change.
Our first reaction should be to the bold illogic of many of the parables. They contradict normal human
expectations. They demand that we sit up and listen. We should want to shout our objections: "No, I would
not abandon 99 sheep to go after the one sheep that wandered off."; "No, I would not send my own son to
bargain with the bloodthirsty tenants, who had already murdered my servants."; "No, I probably might pay the
earlier workers in my vineyard more than the late arrivals."; "Yes, I would sympathize with that older son who
objected to his father's reception for the younger wayward son.".
This week's parable is no different. Jesus, in addressing "the chief priests and elders of the people"
compares the kingdom of heaven to a king who holds a wedding feast for his son. The king asks many guests
but they all decline to come offering extremely shallow excuses. In one case they actually killed the servants
who were sent to invite them. How peculiar! If you or I were invited to dinner at the White House, no matter
our political affiliations, very few of us would decline. In fact we would shelve other obligations in order to be
able to dine with the President and the First Lady. Similarly were we invited to Buckingham Palace or the
home of any great statesman or woman, you can be sure that we would be there! If we had to decline it would
be for the most serious reasons, perhaps a death in the family or a catastrophic misfortune. Certainly we
would never decline the invitation because we had to attend to our humdrum daily business! And yet, that is
what happens in the parable! The king sends out two invitations and both are declined for ridiculous and silly
reasons.
After dispatching the ungrateful guests, the king sends out a third invitation. This time it is to anyone
the servants find in the streets "the good and the bad alike". Most of these folks are delighted to come to the
feast and the reception hall is filled to capacity. Yet, among the new guests, there is one who neglected to
wear a "wedding garment",and the king has him expelled into "the darkness outside, where there is the wailing
and grinding of teeth". Doesn't this seem odd? After all, the man had been asked at the last minute. What
time would he have had to purchase or rent the proper apparel?
But, of course the point of the parable is not the protocol of ancient wedding receptions. The parable,
like the one last week about the murderous tenant farmers, is addressed to the elders and chief priests of the
Jewish community not to the whole people. These leaders were literate and they knew the Law and the
Prophets. From ancient times, they knew that they had been given a sacred trust and yet they failed. More
than that, when God (the king in the parable) sends His servants, the prophets, they are manhandled and
mistreated. The king destroys the ungrateful guests (a possible reflection on the destruction of the temple in
Jerusalem in 70 A.D. by the Romans which would have happened around the time Matthew was composing
his Gospel) but the he continues to issue invitations. Now the invitations are issued to all the people that his
servants find in the streets. This reflects the first reading wherein the prophet Isaiah foresees a day, when all
nations will be gathered on God's holy mountain enjoying a sumptuous banquet, and where death will be
destroyed forever. In any event, even among these newcomers there are those who are not suitably attired.
They have not garbed themselves for the feast. What are those garments? St Paul often states that we must
"put on Christ"! The final line of the Gospel encapsulates the whole: "Many are called but few are chosen."
Isaiah tells us in the first reading that God wants to provide for all His people on His holy mountain so the
invitations is issued "to many", however "few are chosen". Why? Because, an acceptance of the invitation
requires a change - it requires putting on Christ. In other words we must become like Him!

have not been updated for quite some time, we are asking for
your assistance. In November, we will be replacing both lists
with new ones. This is where we need your help. Please

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
Children’s Liturgy of the Word will not be held on October 12
because of the Columbus Day holiday weekend but will be held
on Sundays October 19 and 26. All children are invited to join
our catechists in the Parish Hall to hear the Sunday readings at
their level of understanding. We are looking for some of our
7th graders (you will get Confirmation service time) to help us
as puppeteers so we can make the gospel stories come alive for
our younger children. If you are interested in helping as a
puppeteer, please call Sue Karcher in the Religious Education
Office at 718-261-6285.
CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2015
MINI RETREAT
All 7th Graders who are planning to receive the Sacrament of
Confirmation next year MUST attend a Mini Retreat on
Saturday, October 18 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the School
Gym. They will also be attending the 5:00 PM Mass and
participating in the Rite of Enrollment Ceremony. This is a
REQUIRED activity for those preparing to receive the
Sacrament of Confirmation in the Fall of 2015.
FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING
Parents of our children preparing for First Penance and First
Communion in 2015 are asked to attend an important Parent
Meeting concerning First Communion on Tuesday, October
14, 2014 at 7:30 PM in the Church. This is a required meeting
and is for PARENTS ONLY!
ADVANCE NOTICE
THANKSGIVING CLOTHING DRIVE
As we did at Thanksgiving time last year and also during Lent,
we are again conducting a Clothing Drive in conjunction with
Blessed Sacrament Parish in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn. Since
Hurricane Sandy hit the New York area in 2012, one of our
faithful parishioners, Mrs. Susan McCabe, has been bringing
clothing donated by our parishioners to Blessed Sacrament on a
weekly basis. The people there are extremely grateful for all of
the assistance we have provided and they have received.
On Saturday, November 22, we will be conducting our
Thanksgiving Clothing Drive. We will be renting a U-Haul
truck for the day to bring the used clothing to Blessed
Sacrament. The truck will be in front of the Church from 10:00
AM until 12:00 PM to collect clean clothing in good condition.
Take time to do some Fall Cleaning of your closets and share
your unused or outgrown clothing with the needy at Blessed
Sacrament Parish. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
PARISH ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCE MASS
Each year, on All Souls Day, we celebrate a special candlelight
Mass at which we make special remembrance, by name, of all
those parishioners who died during the past year. All the
names are inscribed in the “Book of the Dead,” which will be
enshrined in a special prominent place near the altar during the
Mass, and the names will be called solemnly during the liturgy.
Since All Souls Day, November 2, falls on a Sunday this year,
we will celebrate this special liturgy at the 10:00 AM Mass that
day. A simple Coffee Hour will be held in the Parish Hall after
Mass.
Letters of invitation to the Mass will be sent to all families who
have had a family member or loved one buried from OLM this
year. If you would like to include the name of a family
member or loved one who was not buried from OLM, please
notify the Rectory office PRIOR TO OCTOBER 31.
YOUNG ADULT MASS AND FELLOWSHIP
A gathering for young adults, ages 21-39, will take place at
Holy Name of Jesus Church, 245 Prospect Park West,
Brooklyn, NY 11215 on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 7:30
PM. Come for the celebration of Mass and enjoy some

CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2014
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred on our
current 8th grade Confirmation candidates on Friday, November

FOOD PANTRY NEWS
Happy Columbus Day weekend! We hope you’ll be able to get
out and enjoy this long holiday Fall weekend. While we
celebrate this national holiday, we recognize that hunger does
not take a holiday and our needy neighbors continue to rely on
our help to provide nutritious meals for their families. We are
always grateful to our Food Pantry volunteers and to all of our
parishioners who continue to faithfully donate food and
household items to the Food Pantry to help them. This week,
we can use your help to re-stock the following items: cereal,
canned fruit, jelly, tuna, coffee and tea (regular/decaf/instant),
fruit juices, plain rice, cookies/snacks, mayonnaise, mustard,
individually wrapped toilet paper, paper towels, paper napkins,
facial tissues, shampoo and toothpaste. A continued helpful
hint – watch for the weekly specials at our local supermarkets.
Taking advantage of them is a great way to help our Food
Pantry. If everyone donated just one item each week, we
would be able to adequately maintain our Food Pantry
inventory. As always, many, many thanks for your continued
generosity to our Food Pantry ministry – it is very much
appreciated.

Relevant Radio has succeeded in acquiring WNSW 1430
AM and its Catholic programming is now available to
the whole greater New York City metropolitan area.
The 14 year old network follows the mission to assist the
Church in the New Evangelization, helping people bridge
the gap between faith and everyday life, and seeking to
inspire and transmit a message of hope, while promoting
the teachings of our Church.
The Bridge to Life is in dire need of boys baby clothes
sizes 3-6 mo.& boys toddler clothes 3 thru 7. Crib sheets

Consider joining the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants
at the All Women’s Pavilion, 69-30 Austin Street, on
Saturdays between 7:00am and 11:30am in a peaceful,
prayerful witness to life. Lives are saved and the way to
conversion is opened. Join us for any amount of time.
DeVoy Park cleanup is scheduled for Oct. 13th from

car, truck or van, running or not, the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul will give back to our parish $50/$100 per vehicle.
